Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think people frequently miss their own weddings because of a morning quickie while in a plaster cast, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for title suggestions. I basically took @OverArmour's excellent suggestion and managed to shoehorn in snivelling simpleton, gloriously coined by @Eastie77Returns to refer to Lee in the first instance.

@WitcheryDivine suggested Recharging, Red Kites and The Man They Call Ron, is Ambridge becoming an earthly paradise or a hell on earth? which seems as good a place as any to kick off our discussions! Ron = Rob, a fortuitous typo on a previous thread. It does feel a bit as if we're marking time before he turns up again. Odd to do what could be a high profile storyline over the summer holidays when a lot of people will be away, but depending on your point of view, maybe that's a blessing!

Whither George? Is he shaping up to be Andrew Tate mark 2?

Everybody looking forward to Ferret Fun at the Fête? Me neither.

Over to you!

I've just googled Frog and Toad but it's not that. It was about 25 years ago and they were quite old then.

Interesting how we all picture characters differently. For me, I imagine Helen as about 5'6/5'7 (not too tall as I don't think Rob would go for a woman who was tall enough to attract too much attention) and very slim, 6/8, very strict with food. Kirsty I image as a bit shorter and around a size but probably can put on a pound or two when she indulges but she is active enough to lose it again without too much effort. Helen wears smart, classic country outfits (think skinny jeans and schoffel gilets/Barbour jackets). Kirsty a lot more casual and not so bothered about her image.

Schoffel and Barber is more Alice's wardrobe in my mind.

Alice also wears Fairfax & Favour and Holland Cooper. She's got lots of blond highlights a "messy" bun and pearl stud earrings. The sort of woman you see at Henley Regatta or Badminton Horse Trials.

I agree that Rob wouldn't go for a strikingly tall woman, or one who was taller than him. I don't think Helen is hugely tall, only an inch or two taller than you have her, but she's very thin.

Hello all! I had so many thoughts about the recent Archers and i couldn't find anywhere to post about it so this thread is a godsend! I've just listened to the omnibus: glad that Jazzer is back but also glad that now the last few people on George's side (Emma, Will, and Ed) can see how truly rotten he's become as he slags them all off and being bang out of order! Can't wait for his comeuppance!

Welcome, euroseb! You're an optimist if you think George is definitely going to get his comeuppance. I can see them stringing this out for years and years.

Brad and Mia are very intense teenagers, I would have hated it in her place but clearly he thought about it and did the right thing.

(Also a handy bit of reminder about her backstory)

they're going to use it to drive home the awfulness that they had as kids, especially George, with the Ambridge Love Triangle Extrodinaire

And then beat us over the head with it while George gets away with ever increasingly awful (and misogynist) idiocy until he... leaves. Or grows up (like Jazzer)

TheUsualChaos · 25/07/2023 15:50

Oh absolutely. George is the Ambridge good for nothing for years and years. God help us!
Slight glimmer of hope in that he helped Brad out with out with telling him about Mia being upset. I can't see George finding a girlfriend anytime soon as he's not exactly boyfriend material right now and it make me wonder if eventually seeing Brad and Mia happy will mean jealousy gets the better of him. I really hope he doesn't sabotage their relationship, they are both from tough beginnings, they deserve to be happy.

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon yes definitely spot on with Alice 😆

Oh I meant to say in last post I think Kirsty is about a size 10. Surprised some imagine her to be much bigger! Guess that is the beauty of radio, we all have our own experience of the characters.

Fleetress · 25/07/2023 15:50

It was quite piercing to hear Mia reminisce about her adoration of Ruairi when she was younger …

There’s still very limited intermingling of classes in Ambridge though. Nothing to top Alice and Chris and their Vegas wedding. Ben and Chelsea’s brief complication …

TheUsualChaos · 25/07/2023 16:09

Speaking of classes mixing..every now and again I think Freddie and Chelsea 🤔😆 he isn't into the whole upper thing and she isn't impressed by the stately home. I think it could work!

JanglyBeads · 25/07/2023 16:28

Oh that fits with my Ambridge memories re Bert speaking then, @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime - I didn't start listening until two years after his last actual words!! 😆

That's a very popular theory with me here and I've been shipping for ages!

But the very first thing he said was that he was going to beat Brad up for upsetting his little sister, or wtte. Did I misunderstand what you meant there?

TheUsualChaos · 25/07/2023 17:54

Yes he did but more in a jokey way (albeit with slight mean undertones as he knows Brad is scared of him), then went on to explain that Mia was upset because she thought Brad wasn't interested anymore and encouraged Brad to fix things. So in a weird way George got them back together.

Yes. Some people talk like that, jokily threatening violence, but not actually carrying it out. I think he meant well. He may mean well teaming up with Henry but I don't it will work out that way.

BerylBillings · 25/07/2023 18:28

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon
Wonderful video clip here of Sunny Ormonde demonstrating how she does Lilian's stiletto sound effects. Along with trademark raunchy cackle!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p09kt4bm

WARNING

Obviously, anyone wanting to retain their own imagined Lilian should avoid.

(To me, she'll always conjure up a Jilly Cooper/Patsy from Ab Fab hybrid. But shorter, curvier and impressively generous in the bosom dept.)

PedantScorner · 25/07/2023 18:33

They're not stilettos.

TheUsualChaos · 25/07/2023 18:34

@CaptainMyCaptain yes I thought that scene was signposting more to come with Henry and George. The odds aren't in Henry's favour there.

LuluAskIndia · 25/07/2023 18:35

PedantScorner · 25/07/2023 18:33

They're not stilettos.

Exactly!

Poppins2016 · 25/07/2023 19:20

Oh my goodness me. The absolute cheek of George. How on earth are all the adults around him allowing themselves to be manipulated like this! It's as though they're wearing rose gold plated diamond studded glasses.

Fleetress · 25/07/2023 19:25

Ha! I was half right. And half right.

I thought George already had a bedroom at Grange Farm - as he’d asked for and been granted ‘a room’ there, in addition to his room at Little Grange. Didn’t realise it was just a den.

We were right about him wanting to move into No 1 The Green. Hadn’t anticipated he’d want Will living with him. (To do the budgeting and cooking!)

This boy is so smart. Capitalising on the trouble he himself has caused! Citing it as a reason why he needs to live somewhere other than Grange Farm. And throwing his enemy out of her home at the same time. Man …

stilldumdedumming · 25/07/2023 19:28

Emma will be right behind this!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/07/2023 19:29

She has a formal rent agreement, though, so just chucking her out might take a while.

WitcheryDivine · 25/07/2023 19:31

Landlords can give notice v easily if they want to live back in their own place though, it's happened to me before as a tenant - I think it's the standard notice so probably 1-2 months.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/07/2023 19:41

Time for Hannah to move into the accommodation that was provided for workers at Berrow when it was Cowditz, then. Raf and what was her name the other cow-wrangler lived on site so there was always someone available in emergency. I think there were even rotas of trainee vets there as well.

Fleetress · 25/07/2023 19:55

It’s two months notice. And then, even under the accelerated process, the tenant can stay beyond that point while the landlord petitions for eviction via court. The tenant sends a defence form and, if they don’t dispute any of the basic facts, waits for the court to issue them with a final date by which to leave. And then if the tenant doesn’t leave bailiffs are sent in to remove them. Round here the whole process is currently taking at least 4 months.

Let’s see if the SWs get any of this right …

changementdenom1 · 25/07/2023 20:08

And actually that Will sees straight through George's dastardly scheme and says no way!

When I heard it, I thought “that’s why George wants Will there”
