Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that , or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Well, things have taken a turn for the better in the last few days! The SWs have re-discovered their form and the actors and directors have risen to the challenge. I won't say much more than that for fear of jinxing things. Over to you!

(Thanks to @JanglyBeads for the thread title idea!)

Well there is that...

Octothorpe · 19/11/2022 12:23

I suppose I was thinking more of an earlier instance where Jill’s reaction to a supposedly beloved grandchild saying something really quite reasonable was to go off into a big tantrum because she wasn’t getting her own way…..

What was the reason for her moving back to Brookfield and letting Glebe Cottage to the now-silent Carol Tregorran? I can’t remember now, but she was at LoLo for a while and hated it, iirc?

BoreOfWhabylon · 19/11/2022 12:29

Can people please stop with the 'old bat' and similar casually ageist language.
(Not least because quite a few of us on this thread are not exactly in the first flush of youth).

I'll be reporting any further occurrences. Thank you.

Those are high standards!

Telling Miss someone said "Old bat!"

But I think dementia in a close relative can be harder to spot, iyswim. Too subjective.

I'm sure that most people would ask themselves the question when faced with erratic behaviour in a 92 year-old though, even if they then ruled it out too hastily. It hasn't even been considered.

JanglyBeads · 19/11/2022 12:45

Yet

Nevertheless, that's what I'll be doing.

Bubbylana · 19/11/2022 14:25

I said old bat and im 67.

It’s actually Elizabeth who’s partly to blame as Ruth and David turned down the loan and she guilted them into it as they weren’t making Vince welcome and trusting him or something. Annoying that Lizzie isn’t feeling bad about that.

My memory of that was more that David was objecting to Vince because he saw him as a jumped up barrow boy and Elizabeth told him it was ridiculous to miss a business opportunity just to put Vince in his lowly place.

I doubt she thought they would enter into a contract without even reading it properly, which was pretty stupid.

Mmm see I think that’s the same thing. I agree they were stupid to be guilted into a business deal though.

JanglyBeads · 19/11/2022 17:30

Yup Lizzie basically said they should trust Vince!

I am 66 and I would describe her the same. Although I must be honest I would rather be young and foolish, I have no problem with old bat.

Looks like lot of us are having to turn ourselves in, to the ant-bat police.

Now that did make me laugh Grin

OK, clearly I'm more touchy about this than most of the other old bats on here so I suppose it's just possible that I overreacted.

<flings olive branches around thread>

JanglyBeads · 19/11/2022 18:10

I think old bat can be used in a derogatory way or an affectionate way.

WhoppingBigBackside · 19/11/2022 18:27

I was slightly offended at the description of Ruth as a menopausal feminist - what has someone's hormones/fertility to do with it? but I'm still trying to figure out why being surprised at a new mother for ordering a spicy takeaway was deemed offensive.

JanglyBeads · 19/11/2022 18:32

Guess it's the possible reasons for the surprise? Some kind of judgement going on?

StillWeRise · 19/11/2022 19:05

absolutely David should be taking responsibility for not reading the contract properly
OTOH isn't here something to be said for paying it all off in one go and hence not paying interest? especially as they will make money from the panels.
I seem to recall the anti-Toby rant was thought quite reasonable as he/they were more or less gatecrashing and it was known he was not in favour. But I agree we could be seeing disinhibition rather than character change, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Jill's true feelings were as she expressed - simply that she would have kept her mouth shut in the past.

WhoppingBigBackside · 19/11/2022 19:33

No judgement at all on my part. I'd have been just as surprised at any strong-flavoured food.

JanglyBeads · 19/11/2022 19:43

Hmm it's interesting to debate whether our inhibitions are part of our character, isn't it?
ie it's not just fear of social consequences that keep many of us from saying unpleasant things, but kindness.

Disclaimer: I don't know the medical definition of disinhibition.

At least she's not an old bat.

suzyscat · 19/11/2022 23:09

Apparently the bottle thing is more common than I'd realised.
