Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that , or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Well, things have taken a turn for the better in the last few days! The SWs have re-discovered their form and the actors and directors have risen to the challenge. I won't say much more than that for fear of jinxing things. Over to you!

(Thanks to @JanglyBeads for the thread title idea!)

With reason, now I've read through it! Incredibly insensitive stuff linked. Along the lines of 'You've read a thread about a beloved pet dying. Do you now want to read one about a beloved parent dying?' I remember when a report on a reprehensible theft of a Cave Rescue landrover generated ads for buying landrovers. Not quite in the dying parent league, but pretty insensitive.

I think @MereDintofPandiculation that the poster was only pointing out that you couldn't make that comparison as a girl could nor have been in such a situation. Gender very much matters here.
A girl could equally be in a situation where her life seemed to have collapsed, her loved ones were suffering, she felt it was all her fault hand it certainly wouldn’t have happened had she behaved differently), and that she had no way of putting it right. Would a girl crying in those circumstances be criticised in the way Ben has? Perhaps, but I don’t think so.

Ok but so what?

TottersBlankly · 16/11/2022 20:27

Heavens - how has the thread got so long already?!

Thanks, @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g! Fabulous as always. (And yes, that ‘You might also like’ thing is v. strange.)

Surely Brad will step smartly back from any Hunt Ball mayhem? The stakes are too high for him now - and I don’t think I can listen to any more youthful weeping over lost opportunities.) I doubt he’s strong willed enough to make Mia think again, though …

(@Juliejuly, your local paper is very late with the news … Perhaps they deliberately waited? Many expressions of sorrow on the previous thread. And wondering what becomes of Robert now.)

I really hope Brad steps away from it. However, it looks more likely that he'll still somehow get implicated in it, even if he doesn't actually go through with the plans. All that stuff about Oliver's confidence in him was ominous.

echt · 16/11/2022 20:31

Thanks for the new thread, Gasp0de and nice, snappy title, JanglyBeads

On the subject of the "you might also like" links, I was on the thread about the Doodle House and it linked to three minutes of blackhead popping on Sporners' Corner!! I can see the visual link, and neither one for the trypophobic.

Back to TA, great hopes for many new SLs coming from this, but not one that hurts the Brad/Oliver. I'm being too optimistic, aren't I?

@Juliejuly's linked obituary is the most comprehensive and personal I've seen. The others mostly cobbled together the information in the BBC's tweet, listeners' reactions, titbits from the BBC website and the article from The Guardian when he retired. The Surrey one has comments from Graham's widow and former patients.

It wasn't my title, the idea came from a Fb group!

And you've run with it as ever @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g , brilliant.

Also, please tell me that Brad's not going to be implicated in Mia's dreadful plan - will no one think of poor Tracey?!

Juliejuly · 16/11/2022 22:02

@TottersBlankly sorry, I’m new here so hadn’t realised you’d already discussed the death of a very likeable character.
I’ll just keep lurking from now on.

Please don't do that, @Juliejuly! I'm sure that's not what Totters meant. As I said above, I was really interested to see that obituary.

No worries, @Juliejuly !

Actually I was afraid you’d think we were all heartless for not commenting after your first post.

But you’re on the @ list now - so technically you can’t be a lurker any more.Halloween Grin

Juliejuly · 16/11/2022 22:10

Thank you@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I’ll attempt to keep up!
I dip in and out of listening, but then find these threads helpful to work out what I’ve missed, but have never been brave enough to post my thoughts.

Blatent place marking

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/11/2022 22:16

Thanksmas always Gasp0de
And welcome @Voltefarce,@Juliejuly and any other new posters/lurkers.

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/11/2022 22:18

Thanksmas? Confused

Thanks as always

LillianGish · 16/11/2022 22:22

A fantastic obit @Juliejuly Local papers doing what they do best. I loved Robert as a character and Graham Blockley sounds like a lovely man. But surely he couldn’t have kept his double life secret from any patients who were listeners - they would have recognised his voice immediately?!

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 16/11/2022 22:23

Juliejuly, the tribute you linked to was lovely. I knew Graham Blockey was a GP but he was obviously a lot more than that. Condolences to Graham's wife and family.

Robert is Linda's 'strength and stay' - what will she do?

Edwintheboyscout · 16/11/2022 22:24

As Julie and Volte have just unlurked I thought I would be brave too ! Hi everyone, really enjoy the threads.

Sounds like a cross between Christmas and Thanksgiving, Bore! Mid-December, I'm guessing.

Brad will have to convince Mia now!

I don’t think JW knows anything - hence ‘mum’.

Old Borsetshire festival, Gasp0de
Goes back to pagan times, I believe.

Welcome Edwin!

Rockersversuswalter · 16/11/2022 23:37

13 verses of A Borsetshire Lad were dedicated to the merriment of Thanksmas.

OverArmour · 17/11/2022 04:08

If they mess Brad’s opportunity with Oliver up it’s going to be really tiresome.

I’m fine with Mia getting into trouble, she’s so annoying.

echt · 17/11/2022 05:52

Thinking of Graham Blockey, I've just been listening to the Radio 4 dramatisation of Henry Fielding's "Joseph Andrews" from 1986. There was Blockey as Second Footman. Of course I didn't recognise the voice, but his name leapt as the cast was read.
