The Archers - What’s your poison? Alice is legless, the fish are lifeless and Pip is clueless (Discussion #85)

Even if you don't have a leg(?), a life or a clue, Welcome to the first ever 85th Archers thread! Smile

Wild speculation and sensible questions always welcome - especially any newcomers.

A little game for the weekend, inspired by Timetogetup0630 and Gruach on the last thread:

Invent an explanation for how your username was the inspiration for an Archers storyline, character, etc - be creative!

My username is telling the story of Toby, Adam and Ian, although it probably needs some punctuation: Dad! Dad/Dad? Grin

dairyfarmerswife - bit too easy for you, but as professional country folk maybe you could judge the winner? Star

Credit to MrsGrindah for the clever thread title

I think we’ve had leaflets about surrogacy, milking parlours, brochures about the nonexistent race course in Dubai, and don’t forget all the leaflets that came pouring through Jill’s door when she became A Famous Campaigner. I may be over thinking it.

DadDadDad · 05/02/2018 20:34

Hating - your trigger wordlist made me laugh. Grin. Then I realised it described my ad-feed in Facebook.

Leaflets are the new change counting. I was so disappointed in Alan the other day for handing over the exact money and thus depriving us of a change counting exchange.

LillianGish · 05/02/2018 20:53

Pip really hasn’t got a clue has she? She wants to go it alone without Toby, but her alone involves the entire Archer clan pitching in to take the strain. What was the phrase Toby used? Buckets full of Archers.

RubyLennoxExists · 05/02/2018 22:10

So not only are David and Ruth so uncaring about Ben that they could barely remember he had a parents' evening, but, unless I completely misheard, there's something inherent in a boy's GCSE year which means his father rather than mother has to attend. hmm
Fink it's Hmm from me too

orangina · 05/02/2018 22:13

I feel rather awful but I am rather desperate for Brine to go to jail and JD to have to step daintily down off her pedestal and go and visit him in the clink.....

That would be so refreshing!

RubyLennoxExists · 05/02/2018 22:14

And how old does that make him? I believe the GCSE options have to be chosen by Y9 now so is he in Y8 and therefore choosing; or in one of Y's 9,10 or 11?

RubyLennoxExists · 05/02/2018 22:14

Ben ,not Brian Grin

orangina · 05/02/2018 22:14

Then perhaps Adam could take over the farm, up the herbal leys (sp?) and there would be a rural idyll back in Abridge....

(wishful thinking, along with writing out Alice, Kirstie and Freddie as characters in some kind of pain-free way....)

Fink · 05/02/2018 22:28

And how old does that make him?
I think he's in Year 11, the reference was to him actually sitting GCSEs not just choosing them.

Alleycat1 · 05/02/2018 22:33

orangina No, don't write out Alice just bring back the old one. She used to be one of my favourite characters.

HatingTheBigShow · 05/02/2018 22:47

While I am not sympathising with Pip, she and Toby have been told that this is an ArcherBabyTM, they don't need Toby and will look after it by themselves, thank you very much. They can't now be put out when she believes their nonsense.

TheAntiBoop · 05/02/2018 22:57

I reckon Ruth just told David that because she couldn't be arsed to go

ADarkandStormyKnight · 05/02/2018 23:07

I agree Hating. And after all that fuss about Pip telling Elizabeth first. Hmm.

BashStreetKid · 05/02/2018 23:36

Completely random change of subject- has anyone noticed how Archers characters are obsessed with leaflets and brochures?

Absolutely! Also how they manage to pick them up so easily. Kirsty seemed to be dropping off some incredibly technical leaflets about the chemicals found on Brian's land - hardly the sort of thing you find scattered around in the local library.

BashStreetKid · 05/02/2018 23:40

I feel rather awful but I am rather desperate for Brine to go to jail and JD to have to step daintily down off her pedestal and go and visit him in the clink

Wouldn't we all enjoy listening to JD standing in the visitors' queue at Belmarsh with the likes of various Horrobins waiting to be searched? You can just hear her chuntering on about how they shouldn't treat her like one of those dreadful common criminals' wives.

EBearhug · 06/02/2018 00:59

I was so disappointed in Alan the other day for handing over the exact money and thus depriving us of a change counting exchange.

Someone said, "is contactless okay?" Might have been Nic, serving in the Bull.

Toby said "baskets full of Archers", I think.

Gruach · 06/02/2018 05:16

Didn't Jenny visit Matt in prison? Some time when Lillian couldn't go. (But now I'm imagining I remember Peggy doing the same and I'm sure that can't be right ... Or did she visit Helen?)

Eastpoint · 06/02/2018 06:41

There’s an article, I don’t think it’s comprehensive enough to call it an interview, featuring June Spencer in today’s Times. Sorry if it is behind the paywall.

Archers matriarch, 98, scolds show’s lazy youngsters

article

Gruach · 06/02/2018 06:53

Thank you Eastpoint. It's brilliant that at least one person in the cast is noticing and commenting on the drama-school debacle. But I slightly wish they had written a more balanced piece that touched on things she enjoyed or thought were done well.

BashStreetKid · 06/02/2018 07:15

When she criticises younger cast members, I wonder whether she, like us, has been suffering through Pip person's dreadful acting skills?

orangina · 06/02/2018 07:44

Ok Alleycat1, I'll give you the OLD Alice (it's the new pinot grigio slurping version I'd willingly can....), but I think Freddie has to go. Would have added Kate to the list, but she has been quite entertaining lately (and is now on gardening leave in SA....)

Eastpoint · 06/02/2018 10:05

I’ve just seen that the original interview is in the Radio Times (appropriately enough), I was reading the paper on my phone earlier & didn’t bother to check the source. I’ll see if I can find the full interview.

I don't think we can be friends orangina! I adore Freddie - and he's one of the very few teenage characters who actually sound alive. (The other being Johnny of course.) Why don't you like him?
