Would private schools expect us to remortgage before offering a bursary?

Hi - seen a lot here about bursaries and wondered if anyone has remortgaged for school fees - we live in a 700K home (all paid off) in London. Salaries 90K gross. Potential school fees are 12K a term so 72K a year for 2. Would we qualify for a part bursary or would we be expected to remortgage? Do they look at the home first? Id be interested in any bursar views as there have been a few posting?

Only 4% of children in my DCs school are on bursary / scholarship (as per their latest financial figures), that’s 20 kids out of the entire school of 500.

That was our experience, too. Some of them are non selective. But the ‘small, nurturing’ school we chose turned out not to be as nurturing as we hoped because dd is being physically bullied and they tell us it’s not happening.

That’s terrible, I’m so sorry for your DD.

Wow, after my pub and club and jogging and detoxing and shopping
and showing and waxing and shaving and barber and bathing ….

you guys still here !
spent the entire weekend obsessing over other people's money.
now including teachers kids money .

Instead of running your mouth, get your lazy bum behind the wheel and drive for Uber. At least then you'll have some cash in your pocket instead of living through everyone else.

If your fingers and eyes are working with device and keyboards .
I'm sure you're capable of earning your own money.

But hey, if getting your own life in order is still a work in progress, London might be an interesting life lesson for your kid.

It's so funny—you seem to believe capitalism owes you access to everyone else's money while expecting everyone else to earn it. That's quite a philosophy

Ayaboo · 25/07/2026 15:57

I suppose it's the same crowd who, once they've secured their footing, turn their attention to social climbing—carefully engineering opportunities to marry into families whose children have actually built and financed their own futures. It's remarkable how much ingenuity goes into positioning themselves around other people's success, while so little is invested in creating any of their own.

I’ll make sure all the under 18s I know of recognise the difference between a genuine relationship and someone looking for a lifetime bursary through marriage.

Ayaboo · 25/07/2026 16:18

If you already have such a strong dislike for teachers' kids, why are you so eager to get into that circle in the first place? It seems rather contradictory to want access to a world you claim to despise. That kind of self-destructive, toxic mindset says more about your own outlook than the people you criticise. Even if you won the lottery and got into Eton tomorrow, I’d still question whether you’d truly fit in there.

Ayaboo · 25/07/2026 16:21

At least communism is honest about its principles. This fluffy, performative version of being ‘for the people’ while benefiting from the very privilege it criticises is just hypocrisy.

If crossing the border is really the objective, you can always fly to Finland and go from there.

Prisoners also eat together three times a day. If collective dining were the benchmark for brilliance, the Fields Medal would have a very different list of recipients.

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 25/07/2026 16:35

You would need to remortgage.

Most of the big London schools use similar criteria and the same company to do very detailed due diligence into the parents’ circumstances.

See Dulwich College guidance which require the parents’ accommodation to be rented or mortgaged.

Ayaboo · 25/07/2026 16:50

This is starting to raise concerns about potential benefit fraud.
For transparency and to avoid any loopholes involving local village groups or informal arrangements, it would be better to keep everything within the Greater London

Rewaw · 25/07/2026 18:12

@Ayaboo Are you ok?

SelmaSilver · 25/07/2026 18:15

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. This thread has descended into anarchy with two troll-ish people throwing around random observations that only tangentially relate to OPs question. But they are so funny, I've brought popcorn!

Ayaboo · 25/07/2026 19:14

Popcorn is high risk choking hazard .

I think this POST may be becoming too serious and technically detailed for Mumsnet. If it’s heading into financial fraud, the thread may well be removed.

Sadly, it's not really that funny. Clearly neither of these people is mentally well.

All schools are different. Putting the OP's financial info into the St Paul's boys bursary calculator gives the following result:

My picture is under review, but anyone wondering can give it a go themselves.

Ayaboo · 25/07/2026 21:21

Are you excited ?
are you proud ?
sorry opps … it is not for country bumpkins live outside radius .

Bursary Awards are only available to candidates who have resided within a 20km radius* of St Paul’s School for at least one year at the time of application, and will continue to do so for the duration of receipt of an Award
and where Parents and candidate fall into one of the following categories:

Thank you. I’m very upset about it all.

MonGrainDeSel · 25/07/2026 21:53

@Palomiino I'm sorry too. I didn't notice that before. I hope you can do something about it. Is a different school a possibility? They do vary in their commitment to dealing with that sort of thing.

Ayaboo · 25/07/2026 22:53

Thank you. There is one school that we can look at which might also be a good fit but I’ve researched EHE and I’ll do that at least for the time being, having found a curriculum that looks solid. Her dad, I think wants her to go to school for various reasons. I’m also happy for her to go to school but just want to avoid another failed placement tbh.

CatkinToadflax · 26/07/2026 06:36

@Palomiino so sorry to hear this. We had similar with my disabled son, but at mainstream state before moving to private. We were then very lucky with that one particular private school he attended before moving to a special school. It’s such a worry isn’t it. I hope you can get it sorted.

MonGrainDeSel · 26/07/2026 08:22

Best of luck, @Palomiino. While it's obviously been absolutely horrible for your daughter, and for you, at least you have the capacity to get her out of that situation. Hopefully you can find some Home Ed groups near you so she can have some social time with other (nicer) children. And hopefully the other school will work out at some point.
