3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ Support thread 2019

mumteacher · 29/09/2018 23:54

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas👏🏼

(Roll on 2019!) 😉

Any advice regarding Habs Girls 4+ 2nd round Assessment please?

coconutwheel · 09/01/2019 20:33

You don’t need a 4+ tutor in SW London. The North London schools are different and definitely seem to expect more academically at this early stage than SW London schools which try their best to identify potential.
I’m sure they must exist but having been in the system for years I have honestly never heard of one or anyone recommending one (in contrast to 7+/11+ which is very different!)
Save your money and read stories, discuss, build towers, play shapes, alpha blocks/numberblocks and letter/number games, colouring, pencil control, write her name. Good luck.

Sciencelovingmum · 09/01/2019 21:35

My daughter is 3 and Apr born. She has been to assessments at Falkner House and Kensington Prep and I feel like I have failed her somewhat. She was asked to cut out circles at both and I know that she can barely hold scissors properly let alone cut out shapes. Similarly she was asked to draw and colour but she does not hold her pencil in a tripod grip yet or have good pencil control. I have been sending her to a nursery that is not academic at all and hence they have not been teaching her this stuff. I've always kept her where she is because the pastoral care is brilliant and she is happy there. Does anyone have girls who got into these schools without displaying these sorts of skills? I feel like I should have started teaching my daughter the skills other posters like Rasberrycake have mentioned a lot earlier to have given her a good shot at these assessments :(
I didn't realise how 'behind' the game she was and feel guilty for letting her down

mumteacher · 09/01/2019 22:17

Sciencemum please don’t worry. Cutting and drawing are a small part of the big picture. I’m sure there was plenty she could do and do well. You haven’t failed her at all. There are girls who will be able to demonstrate those skills but may not have been able to do other things.

Having said the above, I will add here, as I know parents looking to carry out 4+ with their children in the future use these threads, that a good nursery that does aid 4+ preparation is key.
Please look for somewhere that has some knowledge of what is required by the independent school entry process.

Thanks for all your advise from all those that replied kindly. My concern is my daughter who I think is very able; goes to an excellent nursery school but doesn’t really prepare them for 4 plus but more for 7 plus as they go up to this. So this is why I am concerned she will be slightly disadvantaged. I will try and talk to her teachers and see if I can ask they work on some of these skills. Mumteacher do you think it’s pointless I get her a private tutor then to work on these key skills?

Jifey · 10/01/2019 11:37

I have been refreshing my email non-stop! Any WUS feedback emails come through yet for anyone please? Or have I mixed up the date feedback is expected?

skal · 10/01/2019 11:45

@Jifey no emails here either. I have heard that last time they were sent out very late in the afternoon.

Jifey · 10/01/2019 11:52

@skal thanks. I guess I was expecting a morning email like SPJ did.

skal · 10/01/2019 11:56

@Jifey did you hear back from Habs?

skal · 10/01/2019 11:58

Sorry that was for milkytea

goldengirl64 · 10/01/2019 12:06

@Sciencelovingmum are you doing Glendower 4+ next week? I hear they have a different approach and are more concerned with potential. They want girls who will fit in and thrive so social skills are important! Good luck.

lonmum1234 · 10/01/2019 16:37

Hello all. New to this site. Does anyone know how many of the 4+ that get selected for a second round interview get selected. Also anyone heard from NLCS as yet

Perpetuallytired2 · 10/01/2019 17:21

Nothing from NLCS. But after speaking with my daughter, I don’t think she’ll get through to the second round.

Confsdmum · 10/01/2019 18:05

I think we will hear back from NCLS next Tuesday

lonmum1234 · 10/01/2019 18:25

Thank you. @Confsmum any more info re: second round at Habs. It says on a separate thread that they call back about 100 of the initial 200 candidates. Not sure how they can decide the 40 from that as i think this will only be a parent interview- don't want to mess it up for DD! Ours is on Sat..whens yours?

Confsdmum · 10/01/2019 18:44

Ours is on Saturday too. Good luck !

Sciencelovingmum · 10/01/2019 18:57

@mumteacher - thank you for your reply. Too bad I didn't realise how important the right nursery is to this awful process.
@goldengirl64 - thank you for your insight. We do have an assessment at Glendower next week and I'm hoping things go better.

user1471555162 · 10/01/2019 21:39

Hi, does anyone know how many girls are selected for round 2 at St Helen's 4+?

lonmum1234 · 10/01/2019 22:03

Thanks you to confusdmum. I think it's important to stress why you want the school so much and know a few aspects that shine about the school.. Any other tips?

Timeofyear · 11/01/2019 04:48

Haven’t heard from NLCS. Suspect we will be made to sweat it out and won’t hear til Monday.

RunRunMum · 11/01/2019 07:19

Habs: they call back approx 80 of thr 240 apps and 40 places. Nlcs: they said they will call back approx 100 ish and over 300 apps and again 40 places. They said they will notify by Tues.

RunRunMum · 11/01/2019 07:25

If anyone has heard differently please share

titto0805 · 11/01/2019 08:54

Bute House, 7+ anyone? Anyone has heard back from them?

Timeofyear · 11/01/2019 09:08

Interesting knowing the numbers - thanks @RunRunMum. Do you know how’s many get called back for SHHS and Channing by any chance? And when we can expect to hear back from Channing?
