3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ Support thread 2019

mumteacher · 29/09/2018 23:54

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas👏🏼

(Roll on 2019!) 😉

So hard to see how they assess at 4+. Frankly if my DD needs a poo that day she’s in complete meltdown.

RaspberryCake · 17/11/2018 11:26

@Omasa I am so with you on wanting to get it done and over. My DS is in a state school so he has been prepping since May to cover the 7+ curriculum. I think he is ready and will do his best in the exam but has reached saturation point in terms of prep. I get so sucked in to the hysteria of the whole thing. I totally lose perspective.

Yookytooky · 17/11/2018 18:06

Would anyone be willing to share how they prepared their DC for 3+ - we are in super competitive N London. Got our older DC in to great prep at 7+ using bond etc but unsure of what to focus on with 2 yo. Target schools don't provide much inf re what specifics they are looking for.

bluefolder · 17/11/2018 19:50

Presumably this is highgate? It's essentially a lottery. Confident well behaved children will get in.

Yookytooky · 17/11/2018 20:49

Not highgate more northwood, Elstree and surroundings

mumteacher · 23/11/2018 22:25

Yookytooky for 3+ it’ll be more about listening to instructions , concentration span, some number recognition and possibly recognising his name.

It depends on the child’s age and which schools.
Some schools for example will have a physical element to the assessments.

Anyone heard back from SHHS after the first round of assessments?

Silver1504 · 24/11/2018 12:09

Hi Nyclondel, the assessments were yesterday. Frankly we are not expecting anything for first week, as we were told the results will be posted in 2 weeks time.

Nyclondel · 24/11/2018 20:02

Thanks Silver1504. It's not on top of our list but was just curious about when we would hear from them.

Anyone have any experience with NHEHS 4+ assessments?

Silver1504 · 25/11/2018 22:18

Has anyone been through Habs girls group assessment in the past? My dd has hers this week and we don’t know what she’ll be assessed on or how to prepare her?

fourplus · 26/11/2018 22:22

Hi mumteacher, can you suggest what will be asked in nottinghill and ealing high school's assessment? also what sort of activities should be expected in habs and nlcs?
can you recommend a goog tutor? thanks very much.

Timeofyear · 27/11/2018 10:35

We heard back from SHHS and will be going for 2nd round in Jan. Does anyone have tips on what they do in 2nd round? Also tips for first round for Channing and NLCS?

Thanks in advance.

Jifey · 27/11/2018 10:54

Anyone else warming up for SPJ 7+ on Saturday? Smile

CB2009 · 27/11/2018 11:36

South Hampstead used to be teddy bears picnic. Need to spot name on floor. Cut with scissors. Draw a face/their family. My info could be a little out of date. Mate tells me they look for polite & compliant young ladies! They deny it but have a heavy skew to Winter born Children. Birthday parties in abundance this time of year. Summer borns often siblings. Appreciate you cannot do anything re date of birth but this is what parents say be SH

Nyclondel · 27/11/2018 13:43

Does no one think that giving priority to autumn born children over summer born is discriminatory? In the real world, we are constantly told/taught that our actions should be such that we don't offend anyone based on where they come from, for special needs, race, religion etc. etc. Yet, institutions responsible for shaping up our children and their future so freely/openly discriminate and all of us as responsible citizens just accept and go with it without question and literally run after getting a space for our children at the same institutions? Just thinking if it's just me or other people also think it is rather obnoxious?

Hi Timeofyear, did you get the results by email or by post?

Timeofyear · 27/11/2018 17:21

Silver1504 - it was by post.

Thank you CB2009. My daughter’s pictures are all scribbles at the moment. Not sure how much of a face you would get from her. From my visit, I did see from the birthday charts it was definitely autumn born skewed. Still, will keep my fingers crossed for my summer born - it all does seem a bit of a lottery doesn’t it cause she could have a bad sleep and wake up moody and there would go her chances!

Omasa · 27/11/2018 17:29

@jifey yes me! But I’ve given up on the prep now - what he knows he knows. How are you feeling about it all? It felt very formal receiving the examination card in the post ...

Omasa · 27/11/2018 17:31

This thread has been so quiet this year. I used to read it in previous years looking forward to when it would be my turn (how sad am i Grin

Omasa · 27/11/2018 17:32

@timeofyear sorry I don’t have anything to add but just wanted to say congrats on making it to second round

Jifey · 27/11/2018 18:51

@Omasa,I totally feel the same way! I am careful not to show my anxiety to my DS and just can’t wait for the day to come and go.
Yes we received the coloured card and it felt terribly official I have to admit. 😝

RaspberryCake · 27/11/2018 19:59

Getting ready for St Paul's here too ... I didn't receive a card in the post but I am traveling for work so I will check when I get back home this evening. Will probably do some light work on Wednesday and Thursday with DS but none on Friday.

My dd just had her 4+ assessment. Do I need to write a thank you letter to the school?
