3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ Support thread 2019

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas👏🏼

(Roll on 2019!) 😉

@waitiekatie- it depends which school it is for. The problem is lots of people hold multiple places and are often themselves waiting for a waitlist position to come free. We did get one for Habs last but I hear this year was a record for acceptances and they are not expecting to take any from the WL. The other problem is the fact that schools might also withdraw their offer if you don't choose them in time. I think this applies to Channing but also to NCLS. We had a firm offer last year and despite the school assuring us this would not happen they withdrew our offer- I understand they have 43 in that reception year. This whole London school thing is a minefield!

Habs 7+ waitlist has moved

Eagleeye23 · 05/02/2019 11:05

Sorry didn't mean to scare anyone... I mean 4+

@waitiekatie

is this 7+? For the NW London 7+, the deadline for responses is noon tomorrow - this'll be what prompts some people to make a decision, or they'll have to risk losing the deposit which is usually £2-3k .So there may be a flurry of activity tomorrow and later this week.

what schools are you waiting for? I know of a few who were offered UCS off the WL yesterday.

@litan8 it's so nice when that happens!

whatisit12345 · 05/02/2019 12:18

Waitlist at Highgate 7+ should move or is moving (we have declined)

Skimmedmilk1 · 05/02/2019 12:20

I know of at least one offered HG at 7 off the WL in the last day or so. Theirs is of course more complex than the others as they have to maintain the boy:girl ratio so it may not be a matter of just offering to the top child on the WL.

DV request from user

Skimmedmilk1 · 05/02/2019 12:40

@Tigermom79 I think there are lots of variables - boy/girl for co-ed schools, a wish to balance the year in terms of summer/winter birthdays, adjustments for whether the child attended a state school or a pre-prep and others. I doubt anyone other than the admissions office knows for sure!

My understanding is that Belmont are planning to email all those on their WL tomorrow, after the deadline for acceptances has passed, and say what their position on the WL is.

Anxiousmother2019 · 05/02/2019 14:26

We're still waiting to hear back from St Margaret's Hampstead. Our DD is on the waitlist for reception 2019 - does anyone know whether there is likely to be much movement or know of anyone who has turned down a place there? The admissions officer wouldn't reveal much on the phone.

SQ77 · 05/02/2019 14:41

Highgate is saying no movement so far and will be in a position to give info tomorrow after the deadline. Why would they offer places from the WL before the deadline? I’m heartbroken as my son doesn’t have a sibling. Hope is slowly dying too...

Skimmedmilk1 · 05/02/2019 14:45

Why would they offer places from the WL before the deadline

If people turn them down long before the deadline (which many will if they get more than one offer), so they know they have less kids then places, they will start to offer from the WL.

wishthiswasmorefun · 05/02/2019 14:51

Do admissions officers have much to do with the process? Or do they follow protocols...?

Anxiousmother2019 · 05/02/2019 15:06

@wishthiswasmorefun

I'm not sure. From my very limited experience, the admissions officer is usually the only person you'll get to speak to so it can't do any harm to make clear how keen you are on the school without being pushy, and hope the message gets passed on to whoever is making the decisions.....
I guess if the waitlists are clearly ranked then there isn't much opportunity for an admissions officer to exert any influence, but if they aren't ranked then who knows?

Eagleeye23 · 05/02/2019 17:22

Is anyone on here still waiting on making a decision for Ncls 4+ or know someone who is. My best friends DD is on the ncls waiting list and she tearing her hair out as to whether to wait or accept an offer from another school also offered but from the waiting list. She has limited time to respond.

Eagleeye23 · 05/02/2019 17:24

Apparently she called them and I think didn't really understand what they meant! She used the phrase chocolate teapot... My friend that is not the school!

Omasa · 05/02/2019 17:35

@whatisit12345 is that Habs 7+ girls or boys ?

I know CLSG and SPJ for 7+ have gone to waitlists also so there is still a chance for those waiting.

Pineappleupsidedown · 05/02/2019 17:46

Hello, does anyone know if Channing has gone to waitlist for 4+ ?
Thanks!

whatisit12345 · 05/02/2019 17:54

@Omasa Habs Girls.

CB2009 · 05/02/2019 21:26

Highgate have offered off the WL. Head made an offer last Friday to a sibling. Unless things have altered then no place numbers on Highgate WL. Every decision made by Junior School Head himself who usually phones (first hand experience). Remember all schools also over offer so a decline does not always result in an extra space. Sorry

Skimmedmilk1 · 06/02/2019 07:36

Yes, highgate offer 100-110 and they have 80 places
