World Book Day

Is on 1st March. I thought some costume ideas might be helpful? Son 1 has decided he would like to go as Dracula or Pikachu (handy, as we have stuff for both of those costumes) and Son 2 is going to wear his cowboy outfit.

I'm going as Wee Willie Winkie. No, I'm not an over-keen parent, I'm a teacher and we have to dress up as well.
I was Wally last year, the Gruffalo the year before.

Ds1 (6) is going as a dwarf from Snow White! Oversized top with a black belt, plain trousers or joggers, a beard and a hat, should be fairly easy (I hope)!

our school hasn't announced book day yet

I'm working this weekend and tomorrow is my only day off this week -no notice = no costume :(

What book is Pikachu in?

Unfortunately the boy has many Pokemon books. So he won that argument.

DS2 (9) has to dress as a hero. Do schools know that parents hate the dressing up malarkey? It's a PITA. The note comes through and my heart sinks.

dd1 is going as meg or Winnie the witch. She can't decide.

Dd is going as mathilda - normal dress and a copy of a Dickens book

DS1 has to be a pirate. I'm not sure where to find a pirate costume in time as pay day is the 27th

Just thought I sound like a right bundle of laughs don't I? Sorry. I just really don't like the dressing up thing. It was ok when they were little because we had dressing up outfits. Not when they are 9 though.

This year I have Fred Weasley, Tubby Tabby and the Highway Rat.
Last year was Reepicheep, butterfly from Gruffalo, mouse from Gruffalo.

I refuse to let mine go as anything from TV/film if the TV/film came first.
I did have to let DS1 go as Henry VIII one year though as he only read history books at the time.

I quite like dressing up if we get enough notice, we had fun with Red nose day, but as I wrote earlier WB day is pain for older DDs.
Their books are about ordinary children, even the characters in Percy Jackson wear normal clothes. I can't see DD walking round as Medusa.

I really hope we don't have to do this again...unless Disney princess costumes count- Rapunzel is a story, right?So that's dd1 sorted. Ds has been a pirate about 3 times- (usually Hallowe'en pirate costumes- as he has about 3). We didn't think we could link Darth Vader to a book, however tenuously. In fact Hallowe'en costumes have served us well in the past- skeleton costume, copy of Funny bones- job done. Ds is only 9- yet I feel like we have done book day hundreds of time

Dc's school is notorious for announcing participation in such things the night before. And this year, we really can't afford to be buying anything- ds will have to borrow one of his sister's disney frocks!!evil

DD went as Pippi Longstocking. We got 2 weeks notice, the school already did a book week in January.

Dd (4) will be slinky malinky/mog . Because I already have a cat costume. We were told this morning, and if I didn't have anything I'd be stuffed as i work. A fortbights notice should be minimum.

My DD is 13 and they're still dressing up for Book Day.

She's going as Death (Discworld). Found a costume DH had from when we lived in the US and people in his office dressed up for halloween . That's going to look good at the bus-stop... hopefully I can get her to take it in a bag. Apart from the scythe, of course.

How quick WBD comes round again

Luckily this year my Ds(8) , he has become a mad Harry Potter fan, so much so he had Harry Potter themed Xmas pressies , so we have the full dressing up set, ready and willing to go.

DD (11) has also decided to go as Thing 2 so that's easy too, just a red hoodie/long sleeved t -shirt, with thing 2 written on, black leggings and a cheap blue wig off Ebay.

DD's school very much a pain in the backside as they will not let them go as footballers from their favourite annual, or as any normally dressed character ie Tracie Beaker, Bella from Twilight etc, so it's actually very hard to find a character to go as.

So no frantic costume making for me this year ...woohoo

Raahh my DS has a series of star wars books that he got in the US as first readers so I am having 2 clone troopers this year, Darth Vader was last year. DD is going as one half of the main character some book she read at school, best friend is going as the other half I have no idea what the book is or what character she is but the best friends mum is a seamstress and so she is sorting both costumes :)

DS (8) is going as Edward Cullen - slightly as not sure many others in his class will be aware of the Twilight books - I guess the young'ish teacher will though!! (not that DS has read them but he has seen the films) - BUT is nice easy costume to get ready

pimmsgalore- really? ooh....ds has had his Vader/Clone costunes about 3 years- but he's a skinny little thing, and they still fit (not very practical for going to the loo, though!)

Oh, its not just WBD. They dressed up for Children in need day, had a Pink day for Breast cancer awareness (it's not a given that secondary school age girls will have anything pink), and last year had a pyjama day - it is an all girls school. The idea of teenage boys in their nightwear would be immensely scary!

We haven't had the date yet. Oh no, it cant be time for the annual 'spiderman isn't technically a book character' discussion. Like the past four years.

a) guide uniform from another part of the world) learned about in email this am. Tis tonight. Imagination allowed.
b) something that isnt Susan from Narnia and dd doesnt want to be a puss in boots or black beauty. She does have a long black dress that she once wore to be Marie Curie but we cant think of any characters in long black dresses.
