Is on 1st March. I thought some costume ideas might be helpful? Son 1 has decided he would like to go as Dracula or Pikachu (handy, as we have stuff for both of those costumes) and Son 2 is going to wear his cowboy outfit.

I'm going as Wee Willie Winkie. No, I'm not an over-keen parent, I'm a teacher and we have to dress up as well.
I was Wally last year, the Gruffalo the year before.

I don't like parents being put into a corner where they have to fork out a lot of time or money (or both) to come up with a new costume either. But I wonder why our nursery school has been completely silent about World Book Day or costumes. I'm sure many children could use their existing costumes at home (or borrowed ones in school) - or even go in mufti (eg Horrid Henry, Hermione out of uniform) and think of a story around it. Moaning Myrtle is a great idea!

myBOYSareBONKERS · 29/02/2012 12:38

ds1 (age 8) going as Harry Potter. At least I hope he is because as yet the head hasnt sent out a letter not allowing it (CEVA school and Harry Potter is the work of the devil Hmm ) Ds2 wanted to go as Spiderman (and he has the book) however it is an all in one costume and as he is only in reception I think it maybe a bit tricky for going to the loo - so he is going in his Ninja costume (and yes!! he has a Ninja book!!).

My school teacher friend is going as Dick Whittington - leggings, long top, long boots, long stick with handerchief tied on.

DuchessofMalfi · 29/02/2012 12:42

DD's school had their dress up day last week to coincide with their book week. She put on her Halloween witch costume and went as the witch from Room on the Broom. Several other girls in school had the same idea :o.

herecomesthsun · 29/02/2012 12:44

literary female dr - the princess from Zog (Julia Donaldson)

marge2 · 29/02/2012 12:50

Now I'm going to make you all jeallous. Our school announced it a NO DRESSING UP DAY. They are having an author in instead.

Halleloooojah!!!

grannyperv · 29/02/2012 12:54

Im sitting here making a slytherin tie atm whilst lurking on here. And printed off 2 slythrin badge fronts which i have stuck to cardboard for her to stick on a black cardigan. We had about 2 days notice.

shotinfoot · 29/02/2012 12:58

Urgh - I hate this. Both my children want to go in fancy dress and I get all uppity about it and insist they go as a book character.

I have everything (including hair gel) to send DS1 as Tintin but he's having none of it as all his friend's are going as Darth Vader.

Was going to go with Charlie, George or Horrid Henry but he insists they are rubbish.

I'm annoyed that 10 mins of me cobbling something together out of his existing clothes is not good enough and he's demanding a £10+ supermarket fancy dress outfit.

He's not getting one but I can't be arsed with the fallout Angry

Can you tell I'm annoyed?

shotinfoot · 29/02/2012 13:00

slightlyjaded - can I ask how you have fashioned your hat for cat in a hat? Did you have one already or have you done something creative?

BrokenBananaTantrum · 29/02/2012 13:00

DD is going as the witch from 'Room on the Broom'. Its quite easy 0 purple skirt and red top. might be suitable for some of the grown ups who have to dress up......

Morebiscuitsplease · 29/02/2012 13:13

Really glad our school is celebrating world book day with an emphasis on reading and books. We have had bedtime stories, a play showing some books and children are taking in their favourite books. No dressing up and a real focus on books. This has been equally enjoyable for all. One happy Mum here.

Whorulestheroost · 29/02/2012 13:25

THANK GOD it's not just me then! We had pirate costumes last Wednesday to fork out for, then last Friday dd had to dress as a lady as the mayor was visiting, now this. Ffs where does it end?! Ok so maybe I'm just a major misery but I do resent having to do this fancy dress thing 3 times in just over a week. Anyway dd is going as Elizabeth aka the naughtiest girl in school. I have made a badge in the schools logo shape saying the naughtiest girl in school, I'm going to tie hair in pig tails put a tie on her, one sock up and one sock down and bobs your uncle we have her favourite character!!

WannaBeWildCosMyLifesSoTame · 29/02/2012 13:29

DD is planning to go as Mighty Mart from the latest Jacqueline Wilson book - the tiny pic of a little girl dressed a a superhero. I didn't know who it was either but it looks fairly easy to cobble together except that the leotard I ordered from Ebay (DD does gym so I didn't mind buying a spare) has still not shown up. If it doesn't come tomorrow I am going to need a very quick idea to sort out before Friday morning - and even if it does I am in for a lot of sewing at the last minute!

limetimemummy · 29/02/2012 13:45

shotinfoot - we are doing cat in the hat and have made the hat very simply out of some plain white cardboard for the hat and red & white crepe paper to do the stripes around it, all held together with double sided sticky tape. It took about an hour last night to do it.

AwkwardMary · 29/02/2012 13:48

I offered all kinds for DD aged 7 but they're all rubbish apparently. The only thing she's agreed to is Tracy Beaker. I am planning to curl her hair and put her in a "tough" looking outfit of skull t shrt with denim waistcoat and jeans.

she will probably regret this when she sees that the other little girls are not too cool to dress as ALice or Red Riding Hood! But she's being a stick in the mud!

Tillyscoutsmum · 29/02/2012 13:58

DD will also be going as Cat in the Hat (using her black cat halloween outfit). I am however the least arty/crafty person in the world and I know her "hat" will be a total disaster Sad

bumbez · 29/02/2012 14:16

Dd 1 is going as Hermione but in plain clothes- we've made a wand out of a twig and covered an old book in brown paper and written spells on it . Dd2 is little red riding hood- I've cobbled it together from a red slanket I found in a charity shop. She did announce this morning that she would like me to make some buns to put in her basket! Err no!

LadyInPink · 29/02/2012 14:37

At DDs school they have insisted that the DC wear their PE kit under their dressing up clothes as it's a PE day, ffs. Completely narrows down what you can and can't wear. In the end DD is going as Violet Beauregarde as she wears a blue tracksuit (DD PE tracksuit is blue - huzzah) and we have made a homemade badge with Champion Gum Chewer to cover the school's emblem and made a golden ticket to go inside a chocolate bar (from asda) with a Wonka wrapper and silver foil. She will give out a square of chocolate to her class and whoever after the bell goes for hometime. What's the reckoning she will have lots of best friends that day Grin

She wants to put blue tack behind her ear for gum and pretend to chew it and wants to wear blue paint on her face - we'll see.

Voidka · 29/02/2012 14:44

We are all going in our pyjamas!

feralgirl · 29/02/2012 14:50

Ladyinpink that's a brilliant costume

I think DS will be going in his very unimaginative Thomas costume as he wore his amazing home-made spider costume for the nativity Hmm Or he could be a pirate I suppose.

JParkson · 29/02/2012 15:00

Dracula is a very good shout! DS has a vampire costume from his halloween disco - thank you EndoplasmicReticulum for mentioning that one!

DS really wants to go as Pr Caspian but I haven't got anything remotely Narnian he could dress up in. He does have a little shield and a sword from when he dressed up as Peter a couple of years ago, but we lion-witched-and-wardrobed it by giving him this fake fur shrug thing of my Mum's to be one of the fur coats from the wardrobe. That and a standard uniform and he was sorted. But Caspian is a bit trickier I think

EndoplasmicReticulum · 29/02/2012 15:22

BrokenBanana I did the witch from Room on the Broom one year, as I had a red jumper, purple skirt and academic robes. I had to explain who I was a lot though, took the book with me.

Pirates are in lots of books.

Some of my students did "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" last year. That's maybe not suitable for primary though!

Dd's chool have to dress up next Friday (10th) She wanted to go as a mermaid but I don't know where to get it from. Would rather get something from a shop than buy it online in case it doesn't tuen up in time.

Twit · 29/02/2012 16:28

DS2: WW2-Evacuee
DD: flight - Supergirl
DS3: jack & the beanstalk - cow
meh, although it will be interesting at the dentist after school Grin

LadyInPink · 29/02/2012 16:44

why thankyou feralgirl Grin

dixiechick1975 · 29/02/2012 16:48
