Is on 1st March. I thought some costume ideas might be helpful? Son 1 has decided he would like to go as Dracula or Pikachu (handy, as we have stuff for both of those costumes) and Son 2 is going to wear his cowboy outfit.

I'm going as Wee Willie Winkie. No, I'm not an over-keen parent, I'm a teacher and we have to dress up as well.
I was Wally last year, the Gruffalo the year before.

Any ideas how to do camicazi?

DS won first prize for Year One. I'm assured the giant bar of chocolate that was part of his costume in no way influenced the judges. Grin

DD1's was slightly less annoying as it was themed- Alice in Wonderland. I still racked my brain for something we could cobble together without buying anything. In the end she went as the March hare, with a strange assortment of clothes, a big ribbon round her neck in lieu of a bow tie, and hasty cardboard ears with straw round them.
Apparently she was the only March Hare in the whole school, which pleased her no end.
DD2 had the day off for a hospital appointment, but if we made it back in time she would have been Veruca Salt.

DS1 is Harry Potter and DS2 is going as a monkey from Monkey Puzzle.

Our twins are wearing recycled "princess" costumes. DT1 is going as Alice in Wonderland and DT2 as Bo Peep. The Bo Peep costume comes with a little bonnet that makes her look like a diminutive Jane Austen - perfect for World Book Day we thought.

Harry Potter for DS2. We have an old Harry Potter cloak that DS1 had that still fits DS2. I drew a red scar on his forehead with indelible felt pen, gave him a stick which I shaped and scribbled runes on for a wand out of the garden. Finished off with black trousers and black school shoes it did the trick.

Sadly no glasses available but he was well pleased with the scar.

DD's school is brilliant - they let the kids dress up but there's no pressure and no snide comments if the costume isn't terribly well connected to a book. DD always goes as a fairy or a princess.

They had a "dress as a character from the bible" day not so long ago (church school). DD went as an angel so she could wear her fairy costume which I thought was a little tenuous, especially as she insisted on taking the magic wand too, but I felt better when I saw one boy dressed up as Spiderman and another in a Superman costume!

For all early morning dressing up emergencies / face painting etc are annoying, it was quite funny walking to school down the high road with Lord Voldemort

DH had to escord Death to the bus-stop. I don't think they caused any accidents en route, though apparently one 6th-former sleepily standing there kept rubbing her eyes like she was going to stop hallucinating sometime soon.

Just saw this thread having come off the miscarriage thread. It sounded like light relief. In bed having miscarriage and wanted to express how proud of DS and DD that they got their costumes sorted alone. I won't give identifying details -- just say that food colouring and Roald Dahl involved.
Caught myself feeling some guilt for not providing cakes on the cake stall. Hard to let go, even in extreme circs. Can imagine crawling round the kitchen with flour and icing sugar flying. But no, going to let go of that too. Funny how the world doesn't end when I'm not in it!
Feels a bit like my world has ended though Sad

sassymay so sorry you are going through this Sad ((hugs)) but how proud you must be of your two DC sorting their costumes out on their own, such a credit to you x

Mine went as the Gruffalo and Ramona Quimby (that was a great one -- copied jeans, t-shirt, backpack etc. from cover of the book). I'd be more impressed if they actually encouraged the kids to read a bloody book. Have just had a big whinge to the school that Ms8 hasn't brought one book home from the school library all year. At her old school she had three library books per week and a discussion card. Take the kids to the local library myself, but it seems dressing up trumps actual reading where the school is concerned.

My dc's school are having book day next Friday instead, not sure why Hmm.

I'm feeling very smug as have just discovered that Dorothy wears silver shoes in the book, they were only made into ruby slippers for The Wizard of Oz film to make use of the new spangled technicolor. The reason I'm pleased about this is that the cheapo asda costume I bought didn't come with shoes unlike the sainsburys one but Dd already has silver party shoes, result.

Our Y1s looked fab today, all dressed in their stripes as various Where's Wally characters. The hats and glasses I had made during the week worked well, and they had a great morning. We took lots of photos including some group ones of them dotted around school to make our own Where's Wally book. Was fun.
