Is on 1st March. I thought some costume ideas might be helpful? Son 1 has decided he would like to go as Dracula or Pikachu (handy, as we have stuff for both of those costumes) and Son 2 is going to wear his cowboy outfit.

I'm going as Wee Willie Winkie. No, I'm not an over-keen parent, I'm a teacher and we have to dress up as well.
I was Wally last year, the Gruffalo the year before.

DS1 dressed up as skulduggery pleasant last year. You need a shirt, tie, school trousers, black and white face paint, and a fedora (or cheap dressing up hat).

beachyhead · 23/02/2012 15:21

We did julius ceaser one year. Sheet and leaves from the garden fashioned round a coat hangerGrin

Hulababy · 23/02/2012 15:24

Not sure if DD has to go dressed up or not yet. If she does she will go as Wendy from Peter Pan as she has a costume ready that she wore for a drama show recently.

Me? I found out today that all of Y1 are to go dressed as Where's Wally - no idea what I will wear!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 23/02/2012 15:52

Queen Victoria - a good idea!! although not a book character - she was in books.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 23/02/2012 16:22

Grimma - You GENIUS!!!! dd has read loads of Terry Pratchett.
Splendid idea!!!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 23/02/2012 16:23

We have dhs old uni graduation gown and a black hat and dds hair goes up in a bun quite nicely.
Brilliant, Grimma, you are my new best friend Grin

Oh bugger...announced today that our school is doing Book Day (am a teacher). Not a clue what to go as. There is a definite lack of suitable ideas for a 30 something grown woman to go as. DS is all sorted, he's got a marvellous knight costume. Quick, tenuous link to a book...King Arthur. Yep that'll do.

But for myself? Not a clue. Had a brainwave to go as the woman in black but I fear this would be highly inappropriate for a primary school. Then Mary Poppins but finding the outfit is a nightmare. Where does one get a carpet bag and a parrot shaped umbrella from these days?

Sigh. Help. Please

GrimmaTheNome · 23/02/2012 19:00

Brilliant, Grimma, you are my new best friend

how very nice! As you may deduce from my name, and my DDs choice of character, it wasn't much of a stretch for me.Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 23/02/2012 19:04

a parrot shaped umbrella

straight handled umbrella, make a matching pair of cardboard parrot heads, stick on.

AChickenCalledKorma · 23/02/2012 19:07

DD's school is branching out and doing book-related hats this year. DD1 will be wearing a laurel wreath (Roman mysteries). DD2 and I are making a large, cardboard hedgehog (The Hodgeheg). She is going to take peoples' eyes out in Assembly, but that's someone else's problem!

TheAvocado · 23/02/2012 19:10

DS1 will be Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. Or perhaps Norbert the nutjob. Or maybe Alvin the treacherous. DS2 will be Fishlegs.

Same costume. Have to hope they don't hack each other to bits with the toy swords on their way in to school.

kcsunshine · 23/02/2012 19:33

Black dress = Elpheba from Wicked? Green face paint and prim hair - hat if you have one. The book came before the musical ...

kcsunshine · 23/02/2012 19:34

My littlest is 7 and they have strict instructions to be a traditional fairy tale character. She doesn't want to wear nay of her disney princess dresses these days ... we're thinking puss in boots as she has a cat costume, but someone's already doing that (does that really matter?!) but I want to get a musketeer type hat to finish it off and am loathe to pay out for one online for one day ... sigh.

Frikadellen · 23/02/2012 19:35

Ds wants to go as Hiccup from How to train your dragon.

dd3 after many tears and after finally getting the issue was reassured she did NOT have to go dressed as a hamster (its favourite book and hers is the Humphrey hamster books) has decided that she will go as Gemma the Gymnastic fairy. just got to get her a new wand.

dd2 and dd1 thankfully do not have to do this

Last year we didnt have world book day we had Bible day. (send them in as a monkey and a rabbit ala Noah's arc)

wheredidiputit · 23/02/2012 19:38

DD1 is going as Pippi Longdtocking. Mainly as she can wear her Orange and Black stripey tights with a pair of clashing long socks, and another clashing tops with shorts.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/02/2012 21:08

The Luckiest - as a grown woman who has to dress up, I empathise! I'm a secondary teacher, the whole school does it.

Things I have gone as - the Gruffalo, Wally, a pirate, a witch, and the Very Hungry Caterpillar! Witch is quite easy if you've got a long black skirt and a hat. Oh and Paddington one year (I have a duffle coat!). This year I'm going as Wee Willie Winkie.

I'm waiting for the school to announce it, but DS 6 is going as Charlie from Carlie and the Chocolate factory (scruffy clothes, golden ticket) and DD 5 is going as Cleopatra. She has an Egyptian outfit from a fancy dress party she was at so that will do Grin

theluckiest · 23/02/2012 22:20

GOT IT!! I have white fluffy slippers, a tailcoat and it's nearly Easter so lots of bunny tat in the shops.....

....WHITE RABBIT from Alice in Wonderland!!!

breaths large sigh of relief

Mrsrobertduvall · 23/02/2012 22:24

God i hated book day,
They even do it dd's secondary school. Dd was so distraught that she wasn't in a group of girls going collectively as something eg 7 dwarves that I let her stay off school on the proviso she worked at home.
It was just not worth the angst.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 23/02/2012 22:27

dd has her own ideas for an obscure character with the black dress. All I need to do is buy her a sword. phew!

DamselInDisarray · 23/02/2012 22:50

The luckiest: Go as Delores Umbridge.

GossipMonger · 23/02/2012 22:53

I work at school and am going as Twinkle Star

DS1 is going as The three blind blues brothers mice

DS2 is going as The Muffin Man.

Our theme is Nursery Rhymes!

GrimmaTheNome · 23/02/2012 23:32

Theluckiest - don't forget the rabbits fob watch (again, can be made out of painted cardboard. The only thing that fazes me is when a dress up day comes just after the cardboard recyling box has been emptied Grin)

Raahh · 24/02/2012 12:39

Grrr. I have just had this weeks e-mail newsletter- next week is 'Communication, language and Literacy' week' Hmm.

Dressing up on Friday- optionalHmm, but of course they are both going to want to !

At least we've had a weeks notice- which is nice, possibly because the theme is 'communication', something the school is usually a bit rubbish at tbhGrin
