Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

All this will do is make people panic and visit numerous shops to stockpile beans etc.

Confused they can't win!

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/03/2020 08:33

Are all the figures we're seeing 10 days out of date??

They're certainly out of date. DS2's friend came back from Italy on the saturday before the start of term. Went to school for one day - heard news about italy and then self isolated. Was then off for six days waiting before getting tested and then didn't get the results for another four days.

TiddleTaddleTat · 08/03/2020 08:40

Potentially those with a negative result are informed later than positive ?

HasaDigaEebowai · 08/03/2020 08:43

possibly but since its just a pohne call I doubt it would build in much delay

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 08:46

It was my post about soap ?vs hand wash - thanks @Posharmchairs 😊

I’ve also read since another really good reason to use soap instead of anti bac handwash

Antibac kills 99.9% of bacteria, great, but, that means a tiny percentage arent killed, and if the tiny percentage are exposed but not killed, the survivors can become resistant to the anti bacterial agent used

Over use, ie when unnecessary, of anti bac agents is counter productive and actually creates super bugs

JUST USE SOAP!!!

@Puppycorn

Single cell viruses have an external lipid outer layer that soap destroys.

Lipids are fats, and soap emulsifies fat, viruses get killed

Using a hand gel means a virus can sit on the plastic or on the pump. A virus sat on a bar of soap will be killed by the soap destroying its lipid layer

Hot water physically washes viruses away and heat kills them

anti bac is expensive, uses plastic - absolutely not necessary when you can use soap

I’ve just popped my head up on the “should I ignore symptoms?“ thread and might need a handhold if my remarks are taken amiss Confused. I couldn’t help it.

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/03/2020 08:57

I presume the way it's being handled is that the number of cases we are seeing are only the previous tests that have come back positive days before. So for example 2,000 tests have been done and 20 are positive from a few days ago.. so we haven't got those 2,000 results yet?

If that makes any sense.

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 09:03

@VenetoResident Sorry to hear about the lock down. Hope you have enough stocked up and your son is alright too. What a worry.. thinking of you x

@Exochord Uh oh .. it’s not going to help does it..the panic buying will reach new heights then and become manic buying then!

@Duckyneedsaclean This was what I was worried about when a friend said the numbers we see are a week’s late already. Good that it’s negative for you SIL family x

@NatoPMT I can understand the explanation but what I asked was does normal handwashing liquid has soap? Not antibac gel but the normal carex hand wash liquid that we use. I found a large refill pack in the garage so was just wondering. Yes I am with you on soap bars.

Orchidflower1 · 08/03/2020 09:04

Does anyone know if hand sanitiser has a best before ( as in becomes less effective) I’ve found a nearly full bottle of carex sensitive in an old handbag. However I know I last used the bag at a wedding just over two years ago. It amazing what you turn up when you’re filing a charity bag!

Is it worth the risk using it? Could I mix it with a “fresh” one I’ve currently got to make two?

Thoughts anyone?

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 09:05

Sorry puppy, there’s a typo in your last post so I’ll just clarify, is normal liquid hand wash soap that will work as well as a bar of soap?

Yes! 😘

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 08/03/2020 09:05

Normal handwash will be fine. No need for antibac.

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 09:08

I’m new to this forum and find it really confusing to navigate, plus no quotation options, no editing etc

I can’t find the “should I ignore symptoms” thread - am literally just stuck on this thread with no way out

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/03/2020 09:09

Handwash, bar soap is ok to wash your hands providing you have hot water.

Anti bacterial gel/sanitizer is if you have not got access to a sink.

If using hand gel with a pump it's best to use your wrist or a tissue to pump with and turn the tap on/off especially if using public toilets etc.

84TinsOfBeans · 08/03/2020 09:11

@NatoPMT are you on mumsnet using your phone or computer?

MoonlightMistletoe · 08/03/2020 09:11

@NatoPMT

To ignore my symptoms? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3841660-To-ignore-my-symptoms

Just to help you out I'm not sure if that's aloud but there you go.

It's under the coronavirus section, type in the thread name in the search bar , you may have to scroll for a while but it should appear.

sideorderofchips · 08/03/2020 09:32

I think the supermarket rationing is good. Yes some people will go to multiple shops but if they do then good for them.

Is it also happening online?

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 09:39

@Puppycorn
This guy gives an explanation of why soap works and what it's ingredients is

1/25 Part 1 - Why does soap work so well on the SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus and indeed most viruses? Because it is a self-assembled nanoparticle in which the weakest link is the lipid (fatty) bilayer. A two part thread about soap, viruses and supramolecular chemistry #COVID19 t.co/OCwqPjO5Ht

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 10:09

@NatoPMT sorry for the typo and thank you for the explanation. I found couple of carex antibac refills and also have Sainsbury’s collection handwash (received it as a substitute for the limited edition Baylis Harding handwash few weeks ago but never tried it). I think this situation has helped me organize the kitchen a little more and sort out the cupboards/ nooks which I am quite happy about as I never got around to do them. And to see dh and dd washing their hands more often .. Little joys of motherhood 😀

Puppycorn · 08/03/2020 10:10

@ofwarren thank you. That’s an interesting read I should say.

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 10:12

Beans I’m using My mobile - driving me mad!!

Thank you moonlight! I did look in the cv forum (which I can only find if I google “mumsnet Coronavirus” 🤦‍♀️)

😊 @ puppy

Good explanation ofwarren

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 10:15

Not sure if yesterday’s area update was posted... today’s not yet updated but they are more specific now (than the 0-4 cases bracket they were initially using)

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-number-of-cases-in-england/coronavirus-covid-19-number-of-cases-in-england

NatoPMT · 08/03/2020 10:18

Oh sorry for spamming but just remembered, my friend is still ill, now diagnosed with Type A influenza

They are going to retest him for cv in a few days if he’s not better

He’s not self isolated despite me giving him several good talkings to and him promising not to work, then I see on fb he’s gone to work 😡😡

sideorderofchips · 08/03/2020 10:26

I can't see the channel islands on that list but we currently have no cases anyway

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 10:26

Went to work with an influenza A diagnosis? So completely selfish.

FuckThisWind · 08/03/2020 10:27

Shit, Nato that's a bit stupid of him.

Surely if he has Flu anyway, he will feel too shit do work.

If I was his manager, I'd send him straight home (assuming he has one)
