Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Emotional Prep Thread

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

I don't really know what it will mean yet. I think we will know tomorrow. I don't think we will have to remain at home. But everything will be closed and it's mandatory quarantine with a fever.

VenetoResident · 07/03/2020 22:43

If you open websites with google chrome it translates.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 22:44

Gosh @VenetoResident hoping all is ok for you and it turns out for the best for this action.

Are you stocked? Do you know if post is going to arrive?

eeeyoresmiles · 07/03/2020 22:49

That is a huge area! Quite a step up.

Here’s a guardian link to what I think Veneto has posted.

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 23:10

I’m glad Italy is taking it so seriously. Dunno why we aren’t doing more. Why wait until things get really bad before acting, it’s obvious which way it’s heading.

echobench · 07/03/2020 23:13

It's interesting that the BBC News website has nothing about the Italy lockdown. I'm finding it very slow to update.

TiddleTaddleTat · 07/03/2020 23:15

I think the bbc has had a memo to tone down their coverage. It may be political.

EasterIssland · 07/03/2020 23:17

@itsnotjustflu I’m from where the outbreak has happened in Spain. There was a funeral and many attended. Some of them have been in hospital and infected one doctor. This doctor has infected a few others in the hospital (mainly doctors) this has resulted in around 100 doctors being put under quarantine

At the same time the families of the affected ones are refusing to stay Indoors so police has had to act. The other day it was in the news as a man pulled out two knives to the police as he didn’t want his wife to be tested for the virus.

It’s gone mental over there 🤦‍♀️

echobench · 07/03/2020 23:20

Yes, @TiddleTaddleTat. Instead we get Daily Fail-style coverage of soon-to-be-ex-royals' outfits!

EasterIssland · 07/03/2020 23:22

@VenetoResident sorry for the lockdown. I’ve a friend in bergamo so hope she’s ok. I read you’ll be allowed to go for work or buying food but as you say more will be known tomorrow.

I’ve flights for the end of the month to Milan so I hope EasyJet will refund me the money now. Tho this is going to be a big deal for airlines having to refund so much money to customers. It’ll end with a few airlines for sure

aliasname · 07/03/2020 23:29

Genuine question: if you trust the government to feed everyone, why bother prepping food?

I think there will be enough food, but not necessarily what we like or want. So potatoes/ beans/rice

For anyone on a restricted diet it makes sense to get what you would usually eat. I've stocked up on gluten free foods, coffee, lindor eggs and wine. Also there may be a shortage of medication of lots of people get ill, so paracetamol, ibuprofen, cough mixture etc

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 23:41

Veneto how is your sons bronchitis- hoping there has been an improvement 🌸

Did you try the melatonin?

I hope people’s morale is staying strong - this is a long haul and it must be very tough, thinking of you ✊

tryingtoprep · 07/03/2020 23:47

Prepping food means you don't have to brave the shops when they're full of I'll people. You also won't get caught up in a fight over loo roll!

It's always worth prepping. I stopped doing it when we moved to a smaller home. Regretted that when I was home alone with a gym injury.

I actually don't trust the government to feed everybody. Services for the vulnerable are already falling apart, people slipping through the cracks. Has the government said anything about how they plan to ensure food banks have enough food?

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 00:14

A 50th person has died after contracting coronavirus in South Korea. The latest died in the senior nursing home in Bonghwa where 51 residents were confirmed with the virus.

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 00:15

21 cases of coronavirus in Portugal in total

VenetoResident · 08/03/2020 07:26

@NatoPMT My DS seems OK thanks. I'm not worried by him. I think longer term we'll need some investigations to check for long lasting effects.

itsnotjustflu · 08/03/2020 07:41

First thing this morning it was 10 million in lockdown and now it's jumped to 16 million. To be honest I think it's needed. They're heading the same way as Wuhan and their mortalities could have been a lot higher

itsnotjustflu · 08/03/2020 07:41

...in Italy

84TinsOfBeans · 08/03/2020 07:51

@TiddleTaddleTat I thought the bbc had been told to lessen their coverage too. Five live radio barely mentioned it wed-fri (compared to the almost constant coverage on Monday and Tuesday.

Posharmchairs · 08/03/2020 08:03

Morning.

@Puppycorn Someone did a really good explanation of bar soap being fine as soap destroys fat and the virus has a lipid outer shell. Someone may give you a more scientific answer than I can... but a few pages ago it was put really clearly.

Thank you for the suggestion of wraps from a previous poster. My already full freezer could easily still take 2 or even 3 packs of wraps laid flat on top.

I froze eggs yesterday and will do today. Great for emergency cake making... keeps my young dc entertained for ages just pressing buttons on the scales.

Also I dehydrated mushrooms. They are now tiny! Also taste delicious. I’m going to pop them into a sterile kilner and have a go with no else.

Apparently you soak them in boiled water to rehydrate and then not only do they spring back to a similar texture to fresh, but you have instant stock. Ideal for risotto.

Today I want to stock on butter, sugar, more wraps and hunt down some veg items I couldn’t find yesterday.

We are also avoiding church, it makes me sad but I know the elderly members well and they are worried. Dh travels a lot and currently has a bad cold.

Exochord · 08/03/2020 08:11

News is reporting that supermarkets have begun rationing. Tesco is restricting shoppers to five items of “disaster goods” - beans, uht milk, pasta, antibacterial products and Calpol.

All this will do is make people panic and visit numerous shops to stockpile beans etc.

Pegase · 08/03/2020 08:14

Advice for Italy is to self isolate if you have been there and have symptoms (apart from the 11 towns), not to self-isolate regardless. So although some employers are taking it further, that is the official PHE advice.

If anyone wants advice on growing tomatoes let me know. I grow them every year and fortunately for me they are the one thing that seem foolproof

Duckyneedsaclean · 08/03/2020 08:26

My SIL has just told us that they were tested for Covid-19. What she said is really concerning me.

They were in Venice over half term, the kids went back to school mon&tues then developed a cough. They were swabbed on the Tuesday after half term. (25th Feb). They only got the call to say they were clear this week Thursday (5th March). Are all the figures we're seeing 10 days out of date??

Duckyneedsaclean · 08/03/2020 08:27

(And yes, the family is obviously not great at communication!)
