Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

Saw this on Twitter -- for the "It's just the flu" brigade:

American Hospital Association "Best Guess Epidemiology" for #codiv19 over next 2 months:

96,000,000 infections
4,800,000 hospitalizations
1,900,000 ICU admissions
480,000 deaths

vs flu in 2019:

35,500,000 infections
490,600 hospitalizations
49,000 ICU admissions
34,200 deaths

I dont trust the government to feed anyone 🙄

I have two kids with SEN who get DLA. After over 5 appeales to SEN tribunals I know for a fact my kids are worth fuck all to anyone in power. Society sees them as a drain.

I dont trust anyone in power to do the right thing ever where cash is involved. I have learnt to be extremely good at self advocating, standing up and getting what I need done.

If you think society will step up in the age of capitalism then "welcome yo the last ten years of my life"

I have been fighting the system since my boy was 18 months old. Until you need extra help at school or social care you have no idea the way some people have to cope. I'm already converted to it because it's my life

Legoandloldolls · 07/03/2020 19:35

Ah just ignore those posts " did you know that 100,000 people died last winter of old age? 2000 people were mauled by a Tiger in a Tesco car park, and 500,000,000 died from.Thrush! Compared to 2.3 people from Covid19? Statistically you are more likely to be hit by a spacecraft to catch covid 19?"

No shit sherlock? Guess what? All that will continue PLUS covid19. How many ICU beds do we have in the UK? Will the NHS pause cancer happened until Covid19 has died back? No! Idiots. There will be all of the above PLUS this virus.

I cant get worked up about. Darwinism

@Legoandloldolls that's exactly how I feel and what some people seem to be saying.
Including some of the older generation today. It's got me drained. Apart from having a laugh with my Mum and exaggerating even more / coming up with even more ridiculous comparisons.

itsnotjustflu · 07/03/2020 19:43

@Legoandloldolls those posts are seriously doing my head in. Especially the ones with worldwide statistics over 12 months..... rage!!!

Well met my Mum today - she hasn't prepped in anyway, thinks we should all live our lives normally no matter what, thinks we will all be fine and as our chances of infection and death are very slim then that's fine and dandy. FFS so help me. I soon cut that conversation short. She also can't see why our trip to Denmark in 4 weeks shouldn't go ahead.....arggghhh

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 19:46

Lego I hear you 😔

Puppycorn · 07/03/2020 19:59

With all the prepping what I have found is we might need less loo rolls but more Movicol, dulcolax kind of stuffs .. all those rice/pasta/bread isn’t going to help anyways .. will they 🤣🤣 So mag be add them to the list if you haven’t already.

DennisTMenace · 07/03/2020 20:03

I wouldn't start trying to hide the stash around the house just yet, it would be an arse to get to and there is not currently civil unrest. If it does come to that, which I don't think it will, please do consider that a defensive weapon can just as easily be taken and used against you as an offensive weapon.

Esca · 07/03/2020 20:03

@aliasname and @VivaLeBeaver

I am an educated, reasonably intelligent person, but I simply cannot work my telly, despite written instructions. Thankfully, my son set up a Whatsapp group just so I can easily access a video of him pressing the remote buttons in the right order. Grin

Ain't technology grand?

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 20:04

*please do consider that a defensive weapon can just as easily be taken and used against you as an offensive weapon.

And you don’t want to be in an Emergency Department at the height of a pandemic.

Legoandloldolls · 07/03/2020 20:05

Well, if there is a lockdown at least there is plenty of parents ready to make Macaroni pictures. Expect a rush on up glue next... heads up

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 20:06

@esca a video sounds a great idea!

I’ve posted before ( maybe on this thread?) about my Dm and hand washing. I totally get the comment I’ve highlighted.

My mum has every faith in the government and that we should follow things exactly. I’d prefer to go a bit above and beyond and not need stuff. I do wonder if it’s a generational thing?

TipseyTorvey · 07/03/2020 20:26

I honestly don't think there will be civil unrest. There hasn't been anywhere else has there? Also people breaking into houses full of sick people would surely risk their own health. I suspect the few people boxing over toilet roll is probably all we'll see, and I'm still confused as to why anyone needs to fight over that anyway.

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 20:28

Genuine question: if you trust the government to feed everyone, why bother prepping food?

Because that still may involve visiting the shop and I don't want to go out when there is a risk of coronavirus. If I have my own prep, I don't have to go anywhere.

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 20:33

Moldova reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

FuckThisWind · 07/03/2020 20:34

I live within the City that has an amazing teaching / university hospital and treated Ebola patients. Some of the first Covid 19 patients were also sent here. I have reason to believe there is a case now in the street next to me. Obviously this was always going to spread.

I'm going to predict that the Government will take a stance to close schools a couple of weeks early and take a month off over Easter, then see how the land lies.

pemberlyshades · 07/03/2020 20:43

@FuckThisWind thank you

lachy · 07/03/2020 20:47

My parents have probably just bought an extra pack of loo roll and possibly a tin of corned beef.

My DSIS would, if she knew the extent of my prepping, roll her eyes, make a snidey comment and completely take the piss out of me, because, she knows best about everything Hmm

DH has finally grasped that I am serious about us, as a family, not being adversely affected by supply issues.

If I am wrong in prepping, then nothing will go to waste, as we'll use everything in time. But if I've done the right thing, then we will be prepared and able to cope.

Oh and I bought more pyjamas today. You can never have too many pairs of jammies!

Puppycorn · 07/03/2020 20:52

How many of you are planning to inform school and make kids stay at home from Monday?Dh and me thinking it’s better we keep her home but worried they won’t allow that if I say it’s because of covid. We live in MK so after the elderly gentleman’s death reported there is definitely an aura of grief and stress amongst the public but I highly doubt schools will close. One very concerned mum here.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 07/03/2020 20:58

DH and I FaceTimed DMIL. She’s lovely but generally very rolly-eyed at my handwashing/hand-gelling (I’m a bit germphobic and would describe myself as low-level OCD, if such a thing exists) and I wasn’t able to get her on board with Brexit prepping at all. We were bracing ourselves to try to persuade her to get some extra supplies in this week but she surprised us by announcing that she’d spent an extra £60 on food yesterday. She also wore latex gloves whilst out shopping. SFIL was a bit pursed lipped about it - thinks she’s over-reacting. She often defers to him so I’m glad she did what she wanted to in terms of prepping. She’s 87 soon and has with multiple health issues.

sideorderofchips · 07/03/2020 20:58

Boots own hand gel is available. Max 2 per person on line

Justmum89 · 07/03/2020 20:59

My anxiety is spiralling with all this going on I have to be honest. Braved the supermarket earlier lots of bare shelves here. No paracetamol products, hand gel, liquid soap, bar soap, pasta, flour, toilet roll, dettol products. We are well stocked food wise but dont have much in the sense of cleaning preps. The fact I cant get hold of any more dettol and I'm down to my last bottle is worrying me. I do have 1 bottle of bleach. Does anyone have any recommendations of good alternatives?

Loved reading all the chat re gardening. I grew loads at our old house and am yet to get the garden up and running in our new house so thanks for wonderful ideas 😊 hopefully something that can keep me a bit busy for the next few weeks and stop me from catastrophising so much.

itsnotjustflu · 07/03/2020 21:04

Possibly @Orchidflower1 but my mil is of the same thinking as myself and dh. Although dh has just ordered far more bread then we can fit in the freezer. Think two freezers worth. He's lost the plot

I think civil unrest will happen more in shops than people's homes. Plus if anyone does pay a visit to your house just cough at them. They'll soon flee.

Exactly @lachy it will all get eaten eventually. I'm going to spreadsheet our supply to plan future meals

@puppycorn not yet for us. Not a big enough issue yet. But soon I'm sure. Schools haven't been ok'd to agree yet. My dh is convinced we'd never get fined it we appeal that we took the decision to pull him because of CV..... I'm not so convinced
