Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

My final supermarket shop was delivered today - nothing crazy, just a normal weekly shop with a few extra bits. I was chatting to the delivery chap and asking how many deliveries he had left, and he said "it's not so much the amount, it's that they're all massive and full of tins. So many bloody doomsday peppers." I was all "gosh fancy that" while whipping my long life milk and tinned meat out of his eyeline!

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2020 18:55

I’m starting to get a bit twitchy about civil unrest. I read somewhere about people hiding their prep stash is anyone doing this?

No. I don't think we'll see any civil unrest - just loud passive aggressive tutting

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 18:56

Just watched my first coronavirus rage incident 😖

Man at the counter in the co-op coughing, the teller asked him to cover his mouth and he reacted badly. Security walked customer out.

This is going to be no fun at all

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 18:56

I just wanted to know whether a lot of preppers prepare generally for any sort of virus or whether is was specific to COVID-19.

I prep for anything that would take my life of the normal course of events. So that includes illness, snow, flooding, hospital admissions, car break down, sudden unexpected deaths, natural disaster, terrorist attacks. I’m a HCP and have always known a pandemic would feature as part of my career span, so I have prepared accordingly with space for adaptation.

I prep to make life easier and in my post parts to remove myself from chaos.
My prep isn’t always about consumables but also about paperwork, home maintenance, skills and contacts. It’s a very long term thing.

Loud aggressive tutting... until people get really hungry and scared

MoonlightMistletoe · 07/03/2020 18:57

Oh god now I do seem hysterical Blush

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2020 19:01

I don't think people will go hungry. I think there may be a radical adjustment in the range of food that people are use to and obviously the delivery method might become inconvenient and annoying if we are all told to stay indoors at any point but I don't think people will go hungry.

Returning from that area they are expected to report to 111 and self isolate. If they show up at work I would immediately escalate to HR and phone your union. I would in fact phone your union rep/hotline now about walkout.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 19:04

What was Italy’s general out look on preparedness before this, does anyone know?

I know many countries, including Germany and USA advise their population to have 3 days of food and water at all times.

peachgreen · 07/03/2020 19:04

@FourTeaFallOut I agree. Even worst case scenario we're only looking at temporary disruption to supply chains (though price rises are inevitable I think) so I don't think we'll see mass civil unrest or looting or anything.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 19:05

We sadly have already had people try to steal PPE from the hospital I work at.

FuckThisWind · 07/03/2020 19:05

Well my shift on checkouts wasn't too bad thankfully. But I did have quite a few saying "the shelves are almost empty of loo roll. This panic buying is out of hand" whilst putting four packs of loo roll on the conveyor belt. I think for my own sanity, I've had to take a mental step back.

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 19:10

There was a fight on my street today too, I really hope the optimists in the governments ability are right because there’s no cases in my borough but the kids has already shifted

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 19:11

Mood not kids

WHAT is wrong with my autocorrect!!! Why correct perfectly good words 😡😡

RhubarbTea · 07/03/2020 19:12

If you were me and had an Ocado first time customer code, would you want to use it soon (i.e next few days) or wait a week or what? I don't currently have a spare £60-£80 sitting around and have prepped fairly well although there is still stuff I need. Do you think I should wait until this wave of panic buying is over and they have restocked or just go for it because it will only get worse? I can't decide when the stock levels would be best. It expires towards the end of this month.
TIA.

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 19:12

Yeah fuck this wind, just try and nod through it 😔

Heartyhooker · 07/03/2020 19:13

@magicrainbowbeans a friend who is Hr had a member of staff say they couldn't make him stay off work after returning from HongKong, they could. God knows why he was moaning on full pay but I suspect he didn't self isolate

HasaDigaEebowai · 07/03/2020 19:15

Returning from that area they are expected to report to 111 and self isolate. If they show up at work I would immediately escalate to HR and phone your union. I would in fact phone your union rep/hotline now about walkout.

Has that advice just changed then? I thought northern italy was still on the list where you have to self isolate only if you have symptoms UNLESS it was one of the ten or so red zones (but you can't get into those anyway since they're locked down)

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 19:15

Genuine question: if you trust the government to feed everyone, why bother prepping food?

MoreCoffeeNeeded · 07/03/2020 19:17

I posted a "let's help the carers who cannot get the hand gel they need/low income who cannot afford the higher prices on ebay when they havent been able to stock up and there is none on their regular shop run, shall we set up a donation station" in our PTA Whatsapp and...not a single peep from anyone. They are generally all snobby anyway, very insular and middle class and do not take to new comers (like me! I joined the PTA to make friends and when I volunteered I was put on a one-person stall, even when I went for drinks with them and made polite newcomer conversation, literally no one I met even says hello on the playground!) So i didn't expect much but still.

peachgreen · 07/03/2020 19:20

@NatoPMT Not sure if you mean me as I never said I trusted the government to feed people but I did say that I don't think we'll see mass civil unrest. I think lots of the nice things we like and the basics will be unavailable for a period of time - long enough for it to be annoying and difficult, but not long enough to trigger mass looting etc (though I don't doubt there will be some). I prep anyway but I have added to it at this time to ensure my family's comfort AND to be prepared for the absolute worst case scenario.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/03/2020 19:21

Genuine question: if you trust the government to feed everyone, why bother prepping food?

Because I might be wrong. Because I have a child with coeliac disease and I don't want to cross my fingers and hope that a more streamlined supermarket will cater to that dietary restriction. Because now I don't have to think about it. Because I think it will take a while for supermarkets to get their shit together. Because my children eat better when they are eating familiar food and that might be very important if they get poorly and don't feel like eating. Stuff like that.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 19:22

Has that advice just changed then

Since Wednesday official advice at work (health care) is that people from all of northern Italy should self isolate and for the entirety of Italy if they have symptoms. I can’t find that first part online but our trust will do pretty much anything to keep FUCK OFF DAILY MAIL off the property for any reason.

magicrainbowbeans · 07/03/2020 19:24

Thank you kitten and hearty
Management has gone into full risk/response mode, I would hope they would see anything like this from staff as direct opposition to what they are trying to achieve. I can be vocal when needed not afraid to speak up and will do if they go, and not sure their line management will do anything so someone else then needs to.
Walkout is good to highlight in advance good idea thank you. On a personal level I have been reducing own social contact for weeks now and prepping so I can look after others, not OK for said colleague to bring harm to me.
