Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Emotional Prep Thread

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

Thanks by the way YoursTunbridge I'm late 30s and no pressure to move our chain, but it is a decent house compared to where we are now.

magicrainbowbeans · 06/03/2020 18:57

I've run out of freezer space, took delivery of 4 frozen pizzas from online order, nowhere to put them. Cooked all 4 so that's what we're feasting on tonight Grin

Also having trouble with eating tasty preps, which I know I'll regret later...

peachgreen · 06/03/2020 19:02

My final shop is coming tomorrow and providing everything arrives we should be all set. Went in to Tesco today for something for tonight and had a look around while I was there out of curiosity. Loo roll stocks were fine, dried pasta and tins mostly fine, but medication was decimated. Saw two women get into a fight over the last Calpol (not physical but one of the women picked up the last 4 bottles and the other was irate she'd taken so many and left none). Nightmare. So glad I'd stocked up on essentials before Brexit. Thank you so much to you all for the invaluable advice, both now and then. I've found this topic incredibly welcoming to newbies even though it must be frustrating for you regulars to have so many of us flooding in knowing nothing!

peachgreen · 06/03/2020 19:04

Oh and no hand-wash, soap or dettol wipes here (NI).

Heartyhooker · 06/03/2020 19:05

Have tested some prep food before bulk buying that is obviously what I was doing with the ferero rocher chocolate Easter squirrel thing.

Duckyneedsaclean · 06/03/2020 19:10

@NatoPMT those shelves were near Canary Wharf!
Vis freezing onion - you can buy it ready frozen and this about the smells?

VenetoResident · 06/03/2020 19:13

Cookies.....

I am so sorry. It sounds from your username that you have exactly the right attitude to get through this horrible time. 🌷

What's happened in Italy is they've started to allocate whole hospitals to CV and they move other departments to separate locations - dialysis, maternity and oncology.

I hope the UK can do similar.

BanKittenHeels · 06/03/2020 19:14

NatoPMT That makes sense!

Our normal, weekly Morrisons shop for 10 people is due to arrive with only one change - Andrex instead of own brand loo roll.

Regarding what to grow: I’d consider onions, potatoes, squash, carrots and tomatoes as basics.

Then after that I would go for runner beans, spring onions (can even grow them on the windowsill from the tops), lettuce (a few varieties - cut and come again is useful), spinach, cucumbers, a variety of berries, cherry tomatoes, beetroot, chillies and parsnips.

I would stock up on picking vinegar and save jars.

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 19:15

Canary Wharf?? Maybe cos there’s been a couple of office shut downs there? Islington is all good to date. Actually Waitrose was a bit bare on Monday morning - maybe it’s the financially better off people stocking up.

The smell is making me feel dizzy. If it’s infiltrated the rest of the frozen stuff I’m going to be hopping mad. My chopped bananas are RIGHT next to it

Highlandyak · 06/03/2020 19:22

I tend to briefly blanch chopped onion before freezing, helps take the edge off the pong!

MorbidMuch · 06/03/2020 19:26

Supermarket near me now has empty shelves for liquid soap, hand sanitizer, bread, and dry pasta. Shelves are nearly empty for loo roll, pain killers, milk, and vitamins.

Lots of people down the usually quiet tinned soup aisle peering at labels and looking confused.

Puppycorn · 06/03/2020 19:43

Well, pulled dd out of the extra music and dance classes over weekend .. said we would update our practice videos as we know the teacher and she is very high risk too. This Group lessons happen in MK and covers children from three counties so better safe than be sorry. I’m already upset that I couldn’t do anything about sending dd to school, do we risk fine if we don’t send her? I couldn’t speak to the head teacher today as there was an author visit going on

YoursTunbridgeWells · 06/03/2020 19:45

Supermarkerts near me - seem variable. Loo roll, soap hand wash and dettol either decimated or none. But others reported ok - depends on when you turn up vs delivery I suppose.
I hope after a couple of weeks of panic buying either people will have spent their cash/filled up their cupboards enough or rationing will be brought in. It can't go on like this otherwise the vulnerable/poor will literally have nothing. People could starve due to poor food supplies caused by this.

BanKittenHeels · 06/03/2020 19:48

I can recommend the Heinz Big Soups if you see them on offer, they are often about 89p in one place. More like a stew and make for a good lunch for two adults with bread. We always add 🌶

B&M and all of the supermarkets were full of them locally this week.

My teens are very interested in what’s going on. DS is such a sensible little head and he takes flack for it at school but he has taken hotel soap to school and is washing his hands regularly. He is Year 10 and would love to go into medicine, so we’ve take this as an opportunity for expanding his science education on infectious agents, immune sub systems and immunosuppression.
DD is 13 and very interested because her favourite current activity is replicating make up looks from YouTube on her friends and not keen that she can no longer rub her hands all over Eliza’s face!

The smaller DC have had the happy birthday hand washing chat but we are being careful with exactly how we explain the situation, as a colleague laid the hand washing into her kids so much and used words like “if you don’t want grandad to die we need to wash hands” and when the grandad inevitably died, the child was traumatised and thought their poor hand washing had caused it.

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/03/2020 20:09

My hands are extremely sore! Red and paper cut looking. Going to start wearing rubber gloves while indoors for cleaning and all that fun stuff. I do over wash my hands as it is so this hand washing has completely brain washed me now !
Smothered them in B5 cream so get a decent sized moisturiser in.

Gammeldragz · 06/03/2020 20:13

Evening all. Popped into tesco at lunch break (reasonably small tesco, edge of a small town), no shortages that I could see, though I didn't go down all aisles as I only went in for carrots, socks and knickers.
Lots of loo roll (the waitrose in town was out yesterday apparently) and several elderly ladies in the queue next to me buying dettol wipes and sprays. No hand gels obviously and staff didn't seem to have any either. Apparently it was busier than usual.

shinynewapple2020 · 06/03/2020 20:14

@BanKittenHeels - can I ask roughly what area you live in? Your description of the pod on the hospital car park sounds very much like a hospital that we have cause to visit - but no cases made public in our area yet. Thank you.

FuckThisWind · 06/03/2020 20:16

I bit on the latest 'AIBU to not be worried shitless about Coronavirus' thread just now. I told myself I wouldn't. But I did. And I reported them. And I hope to fuck that MN takes it down and bans the OP. Because it's nasty. And disrespectful of the people who have died so far. I have every faith in Justine. She did us preppers proud on Channel 4 earlier this week.

lachy · 06/03/2020 20:19

Ordered a tesco shop to collect tomorrow and have cleared shelves in the garage to act as a pantry.

I'm expecting to have a number of things missing from my order, but will deal with it when I know what I've got.

We've been notified today that someone who works for a partner organisation who leases office space in one of our buildings has COVID-19. It was a very vague email, and we don't yet know where they were actually based. Friday is always very very quiet, so I imagine it will explode on Monday when the email is picked up.

I did feel like I was the only one who was actually concerned by the email, it just didn't appear to have registered with any one else.

sideorderofchips · 06/03/2020 20:20

My 13 year old knows exactly what's happening and has her own little hand gel that she uses at school

The 8 year old knows about corona as they watch newsround at school but I've just said we are fine here

The 4 year old just wants to do everything Thomas the tank engine and doesn't have a clue.

Shops are still well stocked over here bar liquid soap and hand gel. Hand gel is being rationed to two per person which is good but is scarce coming in.

Food wise I had mo problems picking up extra stock today

mylittleword · 06/03/2020 20:23

There is a high chance of human to human transmission in UK. It was identified that the 26 year old having Coronavirus traveled from UK to Poland by Ryanair. No previous travel history known.

16943389ao · 06/03/2020 20:23

Just popped to our local Lidl no real gaps on the shelves other than ready baked rolls, paracetamol and loo roll. Tinned foods look fairly standard. Just waiting to use the check out as have spent my shop avoiding a lady with an awful cough who is now at the only open till. Bought Easter Eggs too so the little ones aren’t disappointed.

Puppycorn · 06/03/2020 20:28

Can’t they even find a better picture? Ridiculous..

White onion doesn't smell of it's frozen in a tubberware container.

Having trouble maintaining our wine stash🍷. In my defence had a bad afternoon, top shot off the outdoor tap and wouldn't go back on with water gushing everywhere including on me😟

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/03/2020 20:33

@Puppycorn I don't like that at all.
