Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Emotional Prep Thread

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

Picked up some more uht milk today and bits and pieces for the boxes. And noodles because my kids seem to be able to live on those

Puppycorn · 06/03/2020 17:15

@middleager aspirin is different to paracetamol. If you ask me (a physio by qualification) aspirin and ibuprofen are somewhat similar as they are both non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAID) to help with inflammation but aspirin has blood thinning properties. Usually we stop aspirin atleast a week before any surgeries to prevent heavy blood loss. Because there is always a risk of huge blood loss if you have an accident say you have a cut or bruise, we don’t use aspirin often though for some conditions low dose of daily aspirin helps . For covid, it’s good if you can have strips of paracetamol / ibuprofen.

I work in a non-clinical department of a large hospital. We have had people round wanting to requisition a room to set up video-appointments. Not sure whether that's just to triage covid19 patients. I know Skype consultations happen in remote places (eg. Australian outback) although I guess they have to manage without physical checks eg. pulse, blood pressure etc.

They weren't sure if the computers would be up to running the video software. IT in a panic.

Then the boss said we might be able to work from home, but we would need to be set up for that. IT in a panic.

Or maybe we could all have laptops...but IT would need to provide them... I don't know if any of this is going to happen, our network is so slow it takes my computer 20 minutes to log on, I don't think the NHS has the infrastructure for skype and home working!

itsnotjustflu · 06/03/2020 17:19

Aw well done @NatoPMT

Puppycorn · 06/03/2020 17:30

@itsnotjustflu I’m prepping up last bit of shopping and I have instructed dh to pack hospital bags which I will go through later. I am not this anxious but it’s now in my town anyway and the GP’s have sent the notice of not accepting appointments already. Pack in case if we need it. I’m slightly calm because it’s the weekend (no people contact for the next two days atleast) but I am sure even a slight sniffle at home with any of us will make me go bonkers.

Legoandloldolls · 06/03/2020 17:43

I have a grab bag with everything but clothes. Theres double / triple of most things so I will split it into two bags now. The possibility of needing it is more real.

LightofMine · 06/03/2020 17:46

Italy's figures are causing concern for me.

4636 cases
523 recovered - great!

but 197 deaths and 462 critical. That's more that the number that have recovered.

And they locked down quickly, is this what we can expect in the next 2/3 weeks?

middleager · 06/03/2020 17:49

Thanks Puppy

Good to have such knowledge on this thread. I appreciate the responses.

Alwayscheerful · 06/03/2020 18:03

@SingingBabooshkaBadly The Casteille soap I have used was liquid and the Marseille Was bar soap.

Alwayscheerful · 06/03/2020 18:08

Ignore my last post, both brands are available as pure liquid soap.

Highlandyak · 06/03/2020 18:12

@aliasname I've had remote appointments with the nhs up my way and it went well, but that was well before this, and I imagine they perhaps might have a few bumps if it's being rolled out to everyone!

WishThisWasLangClegGin · 06/03/2020 18:12

I have a normal shop being delivered this evening, so we don't need to break into any of our stores, until necessary.

The only things substituted is one type of loo rolls BUT they are out of Quavers....How very dare they!

I am an Aldi/Lidl shopper for the most part with the rare Sainsbury's delivery throughout the year, when Ill or busy, but decided a delivery was justified as I don't want to be in the supermarket if I can help it.

Some questions and answers - There is a question on vulnerability to pregnant women so thought may be good to post here.

Duckyneedsaclean · 06/03/2020 18:27

I was in Asda early afternoon, it's usually empty at that time. Was very busy and lots of empty shelves - loo roll, pasta & soap particularly sparse. Was very pleased with my preps as am fully stocked with those.

Presumably the panic buying will only get worse this weekend.

Hi All.

Hugs to Cookies Sending you strength.

My Mums cancer consultant meeting today went well. 2 more scans next week. If nothing additional shows up, then 'just' a 40cm bit of bowel to be removed. Fingers crossed.

I'm a bit obsessed about not touching the stash till I absolutely have to!!

MoonlightMistletoe · 06/03/2020 18:29

Coronavirus may be more contagious than thought,

Air conditioning systems could spread coronavirus, research shows.

ofwarren · 06/03/2020 18:32

For those of you that garden, what are the best things to grow for a good yeald?
We are getting a greenhouse this week and are turning over an area of the garden.
I've grown things before such as strawberries and sweetcorn but mainly just for fun.

magicrainbowbeans · 06/03/2020 18:32

There's a noticeable difference between all the keep calm messages being re posted on social media and what must be panic buying leading to those empty shelves. I haven't into a shop for a while, is it like this everywhere?

VivaLeBeaver · 06/03/2020 18:35

@ofwarren. You need to grow stuff which stores. And ideally stuff which crops in different months. My main stuff would be squash, potato, sweet potatoes to try and store in autumn/into winter.

Then a range of stuff like carrots, parsnips, broccoli, anything else you like.

Duckyneedsaclean · 06/03/2020 18:37

@magicrainbowbeans I'm centralish London - might be worse than elsewhere.

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 18:41

@BanKittenHeels they are published slightly behind and before the 2pm update, so yeah defo not up to date

Highlandyak · 06/03/2020 18:41

what are the best things to grow for a good yeald?
Pumpkin and other squash yield is always ridiculous, they're a staple in the veg boxes that we sell autumn time as we always have a ridiculous amount.

GorkyMcPorky · 06/03/2020 18:44

I noticed that toilet roll is a bit sparse, as is handwash locally, but no major panic buying.

magicrainbowbeans · 06/03/2020 18:49

OK. I was also wondering to what extent its profiteers clearing shelves of things they think will be in shorter supply soon. No way to tell right now I guess.

NatoPMT · 06/03/2020 18:50

Lol thanks @itsnotjustflu

Erk at those empty shelves!!! Central London doesn’t seem to be experiencing this hot headed buying - there are dents in the pasta so you have to reach to the back, but it’s there. Uht milk is out in a few places, mind

And crumpets. Low crumpet stocks

Freezing chopped onion help: I’ve created a monster. Chopped red onion, put in bag, stuck in freezer. Freezer STINKS of red onion

Took some out to use in experimental batch cook tonight. Whole house stinks of onion

Unfrozen red onion doesn’t do this, what’s its problem??
