I’m on the train sitting 2 rows back from someone who is (loudly) on her mobile telling everyone she speaks to that it is a fuss about nothing and just being ‘hyped up to sell papers’. More dead from flu etc. Doesn’t plan to change anything.

Ffs. I’m immune suppressed and it makes me want to pull up the drawbridge! I know this is a widespread view in the general public.

Does anyone understand the articles regarding Covid19 having mutated? I’ve read several and both appear to say the mutation is more dangerous accounts for 70 percent of cases then go on to say that the mutated version seems to be becoming less prevalent. Does this mean that the less dangerous type is the one we are likely to encounter here? Sorry I’m usually pretty good at getting my head around things but was unsure what was being suggested in the article in terms of the impact here in the UK Here’s the link www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2020/03/04/coronavirus-has-mutated-aggressive-disease-say-scientists/amp/

It gets me so twitched when they don't release the numbers on time! I thought the 9am cutoff was supposed to mitigate this!

More evidence of the knock on effect of budget cuts to public services.

LightofMine · 05/03/2020 14:20

I don't like it when it's late :(

Elsa8 · 05/03/2020 14:23

I’m getting a bit twitchy with the refresh button!

TheElementsOfMedical · 05/03/2020 14:23

Does anyone understand the articles regarding Covid19 having mutated?

I wrote a long explainer from the actual scientific paper on the other thread. I don't know if this link works but I hope it does because I can't be arsed to type it out again.

pemberlyshades · 05/03/2020 14:26

@Elsa8 me too!!! Do you think it's bad?!

Tilm20 · 05/03/2020 14:26

Hi everyone can you give me a link from previous thread for the list of things. I can’t seem to find it

Puppycorn · 05/03/2020 14:26

Ok. Where are the numbers.. I’m fretting .. I think it might be over 90 today

fuckitywhy · 05/03/2020 14:27

90 today apparently. (But the tests are a week behind aren't they?)

16943389ao · 05/03/2020 14:27

@TheElementsOfMedical unfortunately I can’t find it via that link. Would be really interested to read it as I can’t get my head around it at all despite reading a number of articles. Been managing to read all the posts since thread one but had a busy couple of days and missed a few from the last 24 hours.

I've been slowly topped up the balance of my Brexit stash and am literally done, no more room or money. I usually do my shopping on foot after work every day and carry it back home. From today onwards, am planning to do my shopping early in the morning when it's quiet, and hopefully just 2-3 times a week (rather than five) and ideally just topping up on bread, fruit, veggies, milk, cereals and cat food. At least I can limit my time a small amount in public.

Have been eating really well, exercising and getting fresh air, which I think has done me good as I feel really well (quite a lot of the time I feel I'm only 90%), and taking a multi vitamin and mineral tablet every other day. It might not make any difference, but hopefully my immune system is as good as it can be.

Have books lined up to read, am happy hill walking on my own or with family, house needs clearing out and garden will need work soon so again plenty to do if trying to limit contact.

TipseyTorvey · 05/03/2020 14:29

No official number yet. That 90 is just adding the new Scottish ones. I wish they'd just stick to the 2pm time.

ofwarren · 05/03/2020 14:29

The numbers aren't in yet.
The extra ones are from NI yesterday and Scotland today as they declare separately

NutellaQuest · 05/03/2020 14:29

I've got a 'beat the virus box' too. Similar to chicken's. I also have cough sweets and throat lozenges. I have a bottle of Night Nurse too. Never tried the stuff, but I know it's a Mumsnet fave.

I am taking Echinacea, Elderberry, vits, plus a daily dose of Coldzyme and a daily dose of First Defence. If I feel anything coming in I will increase the latter to the max allowed and add vit c and zinc into the mix. I might also increase them if I am out and about more.

Coldzyme is ok from 4+ so will be getting the little one to take. it is quite sweet tasting so I reckon should go down ok. (Throat spray). FD nasal spray is horrid and only ok for 12+ so not trying that one.

Tilm20 · 05/03/2020 14:30

Also does anyone know how severe it is in Spain? My husband gone there with work!

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 14:30

My friend had his results and he was right, it’s a virus but not covid-19

He’s still fully ill with sweats / fever. He looks really really ill 😔

Told him to self isolate because he shouldn’t be passing this on plus he doesn’t want to catch cv on top of this. He needs to recover.

Covidisdrivingmecrazy · 05/03/2020 14:32

I'm doing online delivery from now on until ? They don't deliver (hopefully won't arise). If we absolutely critically need something I'll go very late. Suspect it's time to stop going to the gym / swimming. I take methotrexate and biologics for inflammatory arthritis and it's not yet clear whether they're a benefit or a problem!!

MoonlightMistletoe · 05/03/2020 14:33

@NatoPMT Thank you for the update on your friend, I'm pleased to hear it's not THE virus but I do wish him a speedy recovery and that was good advise you gave him.

Justmum89 · 05/03/2020 14:34

@NatoPMT glad your friend tested negative but sorry to hear he is still very unwell. Hope he recovers quickly.

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 14:35

Thank you!

Just seen there are “2 cases in Wigan bringing U.K. total to 92” but from an unreliable source

Any official info yet?

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 14:36

I’m pretty sure the whistleblower doctor had seasonal flu plus Covid19

Poor man 😔

Onmyown1 · 05/03/2020 14:39

1 case in Birmingham. Transmitted in uk at a conference. It’s in the Birmingham Mail newspaper.

TheElementsOfMedical · 05/03/2020 14:39

@16943389ao

I have C&P what I wrote there:

"If it helps, I have read the entire scientific journal article "On the origin and continuing evolution of SARS-CoV-2" that was being discussed (and creatively interpreted) by the newspapers.

The authors' interpretation is:
🔹They compared 103 SARS-CoV-2 genomes (not individual patient samples - therefore representing more than 103 patients) amongst themselves, and against several closely related animal coronaviruses.
🔹The S type is ancestral, the L type evolved from it.
🔹The L type is more virulent and contagious.
🔹Therefore it spread more rapidly in the initial phase of the epidemic in Wuhan (whilst people hadn't realised what was happening and to avoid it, essentially)and formed the vast majority of early cases analysed.
🔹They believe that the aggressive control measures implemented resulted in selective evolutionary pressure against the virulent L type.
🔹This biased the subsequent population towards the less aggressive S type.

I am a scientist (molecular biologist) and so I am able to understand the whole paper. But I have no specific expertise in virology or epidemiology. So - I'm not entirely sure how "less aggressive" this S type is, seeing how it's cutting a swathe around the globe. Perhaps they mean less aggressive in the sense that it's less killy than the L type."

I would also add that this is ONE scientific paper out of many dozens, which for some reason has been taken up by the media. So I'd take the overall significance of it, with regard to the whole of the developing situation, with a big pinch of salt.

Effieray · 05/03/2020 14:40

Nato - So glad your friend is okay
