@lachy I have moon cup and reusable pads for me plus reusable nappies for toddler. Many local authorities in the UK provide a free nappy as a way of tempting people over to the dark side.

I bought my stash second hand from Facebook market place.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 05/03/2020 20:20

I am not at my concert. Boo hiss. DD is in packed London theatre... but so are quarter of her year group and best mates. 3 kids at school have been tested. Someone at work (not my office) has it.
It's here. I'm trying to be sensible. My med preps are mostly done. I don't know how much paracetamol is sensible though given that we may have long term shortages. It's got to be in the hundreds.

There is one serious thing I cannot prep for that relates to a dependent who is unlikely to cope with a) being ill b) having disruption to their health services due them being shut/illness/different people c)self isolation/quarrantine/lockdown.

I really don't know what to do about it.

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 20:20

Magic

Apologises if its been said but remember dc who call 999 do so by mistake.

So prepare her to say address.. And that 999 may not belive her.

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 20:22

& please point out where I criticised a HCP for their career choice? Surely anyone in that field of work would be aware that a pandemic could become a possibility at any point? The title of this thread is Prepping For A Pandemic. Fluffy kittens & unicorns ain't gonna cut it

Springinsight · 05/03/2020 20:23

Witch.

If I was a sahm I'd be taking mine out right now.

I wouldn't give a crap about repercussions and I'd glady go to court, once covid is over and we have a vaccine.

wheresmymojo · 05/03/2020 20:32

This very much falls into the take it with a pinch of salt bucket.

Someone I'm on the course with this week said that last week (or maybe the week before) a teacher at her DC's school accidentally let slip that they were "preparing materials to give to the children to learn at home for when the schools are closed".

No idea whether this was just the foresight of one particular head teacher or if there was direction to prepare for this across all schools.

My assumption is the former as someone on MN would've spilt the beans if it was the latter.

Readyme · 05/03/2020 20:34

As a home edding family with the means to self isolated we could easily help take care of NHS staff kids however would only do so if they were to temporarily move in I suspect that would be too upsetting for most families.

My only other suggestion would be the non NHS parent be given leave from work with full pay paid by goverment.
If both parents work within NHS some sort of co-ordination to allow them to work opposite shifts.

@lachy

Reusable sanpro is amazing! It’s an expensive outlay and I don’t think I could use it if I were on holiday or working on days 1 or 2 but it really is something that should be subsidised to be accessible for everyone

I use a company called Freedom From Plastic and their sanpro products are the best I’ve tried - they aren’t branded to freedom from plastic, just stocked by them

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 20:52

Thanks @Springinsight
I would absolutely do this too. Unfortunately my DH & DC13 are not quite on board. I'm waiting to see what the weekend brings (still no unnecessary trips happening here though) and then make the decision Sunday evening.

Neome · 05/03/2020 20:53

Many thanks all for mine craft tips, very cheering in the midst of serious and sad news. Good for morale.

Puppycorn · 05/03/2020 20:57

I don’t think pulling out other kids and making the kids of health care parents only to risk exposure. That’s not fair. I’m a physiotherapist by education though I don’t practice now yet (after dd doing my second masters) But if less children attend school it might help slow the spread. So may be the schools can be open to help the front line workers but I feel the options should be left open and the absences if any should not be fined in this case.

misselphaba · 05/03/2020 21:06

@WitchDoc it is a valid option but not one without flaws which I think are worthy of discussion.

I disagree with you that SAHP have the absolute right to do whatever they want whilst others have to make 'harsh choices.'

I like the suggestion made by @GorkyMcPorky I like the idea of pulling together in a time like this rather than the 'I'm alright Jack' mentality of some people taking all the risk while others' hide out at home. It's because of HCPs sense of duty that the NHS is still standing, quite frankly.

This has irritated me in much the same way as reading in the paper this morning that parliamentary recess may possibly start earlier this year. Again - why is it OK for some people to take all the risk whilst others' get to hide from it?

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 21:34

@misselphaba

I disagree with you that SAHP have the absolute right to do whatever they want whilst others have to make 'harsh choices.'

I've already explained this twice.

I like the suggestion made by @GorkyMcPorky I like the idea of pulling together in a time like this rather than the 'I'm alright Jack' mentality of some people taking all the risk while others' hide out at home.

Of course you do. Not going to happen. Retired NHS staff being recalled to nurse against a virus that could kill them as an example.

This has irritated me in much the same way as reading in the paper this morning that parliamentary recess may possibly start earlier this year.

Sorry about that. Parliament don't give 2 hoolies about or your family only the economy. Suck it up.

Again - why is it OK for some people to take all the risk whilst others' get to hide from it?

It's OK because I've explained myself twice. This is a prepping thread about a pandemic. I'm a SAHM prepping for my family in a pandemic. I'm interested in lessening the risks for myself & my family & making sure they & I stay alive. The risks others face from their job choice is not my concern.

GorkyMcPorky · 05/03/2020 21:40

The risks others face from their job choice is not my concern.

Bet you'll be happy to take advantage of their skills though eh, @WitchDoc

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 21:44

Yes @GorkyMcPorky
Like I'd take advantage of the local garage who could fix my car. It's their job that they chose to do.
Having paid into the NHS since leaving school, I'd like to think their skills could go some way to fixing me & my family

BlackeyedSusan · 06/03/2020 00:35

The point is, it is better for the kids whose parents work in prioritised jobs to have fewer kids in school to catch things off. Keeping my kids at home protects yours. Instead of your kids mixing with 1500 contacts and say (4500 contacts of contacts) every day they would be mixing with say, 30 ( 90 contacts of contacts)

If you work opposite shifts your kid may only need to be in school 2 or 3 days a week, or 1. Again reducing their exposure.

This was only suggested in response to a pp saying we could not close schools down because in some families all the adults work for the NHS and the NHS would grind to a halt if schools were closed.

Saying it is not fair if some children are allowed to stay home so everyone should stay in school at high risk is daft. Allowing as many kids to stay home as possible lowers the risk for everyone, slows the spread thus making life easier for those working in the NHS.

WitchDoc · 06/03/2020 00:47

I actually took huge offence to
SAHP have the absolute right to do whatever they want whilst others have to make 'harsh choices.'
Who the hell do you think you are?
I've earned my place in the world as a SAHP, raising 3 well behaved and adjusted children. I'll decide what I think harsh choices are on a public forum thank you.

HasaDigaEebowai · 06/03/2020 08:17

Those who can staying at home is better for everyone. Yes there are some people who simply can't due to the nature of their work for example but if those of us who can do then there are fewer people touching buttons, coughing onto surfaces, walking/standing too close to someone, fewer people on public transport etc etc. This reduces risk for those who are out and about. It benefits absolutely everyone.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 06/03/2020 08:32

I've been dismayed but not surprised by the vitriol shown to preppers across MN and elsewhere.

I realised last night that I'm okay if I have to self-isolate but I don't have any tea. D'oh!

Neome · 06/03/2020 09:36

Home made woo-pon (light hearted) spray bottle of water labelled 'I've been catching my sneezes'

Real question for long term preppers. If you are staying at home as a precaution would you go out a) briefly and carefully to collect prescriptions + handwash on getting home b) go out alone avoiding any contact with people to work on allotment?

Catmaiden · 06/03/2020 12:15

Yes to both.

ofwarren · 06/03/2020 13:34

I would do both of those things Neome
I am setting up home delivery of prescriptions soon though as I can imagine pharmacies arent going to be the healthiest places to be in soon.

Effieray · 06/03/2020 14:13

Reddit has a thread called r/PandemicPreps. The sticky note at the top is called "If you are brand-new to prepping start here." Regardless of whether you are brand-new to prepping or not, there are a whole list of resources listed: supply checklists, prepping with a baby/ small children, prepping with asthma/diabetes etc.

A lot of the information is American based, but still worth a browse.
