I agree so was wondering what other countries are doing?
I think NHS is biggest employer in UK, and is specifically very family friendly with flexible working etc. Also with lots of us married within service. As yet I haven't heard any solutions from NHS or govt if they have to do a major shutdown what we would have to do childcare wise other than stay home from work...
For that reason I am very much hoping that schools are able to keep running...

avocadoincident · 05/03/2020 19:30

I wish any 'it's just flu' people were completely ignored on this thread. No response from anyone just complete silence towards them whilst carrying on our normal chat.

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 19:33

@HasaDigaEebowai so why has Iran, Italy, Greece & other countries that are hugely effected done exactly the opposite? We're not special. The same will happen here & we will have to cope.
One suggestion might be to hand the dc over to grandparents or another career & NHS workers have no contact with them, like in China when we saw the little girl & her mum virtually hugging into thin air.
During the war children were evacuated away from their families to areas considered safer.

BlackeyedSusan · 05/03/2020 19:33

Oh come on, they could close all schools but keep open a class for children of emergency workers ( fill in category) where both parents are in that category. ( Or 1 single parent) not difficult to work out. Plenty of outdoor play/ learning, handwashing etc.

The idea of closing schools is to reduce contacts. Closing most schools would help.

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 19:35

I’m game, avocado

Maybe if everyone is good with that, it could be enshrined in the opening post of prepper thread 11?

GalOopNorth · 05/03/2020 19:36

Ok, we are in a position where we could easily pull our DC from school tomorrow and home Ed till this blows over.

Pros - I am immune suppressed, we live v rurally, huuuuuuge garden and stuff to do. I am an ex teacher and can work from home.

Cons - small local community will probably think we have lost our minds

WWYD?

fnej01 · 05/03/2020 19:39

Apologies i have clearly offended which wasn't my intention. We have 1 terminally ill grandparent and 2 immuno suppressed 70+ diabetes etc. In all my prepping just not sure what to do with this... and felt like others might have more knowledge of what happened elsewhere.

Apols again I will return to lurking

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 19:41

You have good reason Gal.

Another poster said they were advised to pull their child/Ren out when they explained their situation to 111

This suggests to me that the schools staying open is a political, not a health, motivated move

Do what is best for your family. And your health

(Yes a class for emergency / health workers children is a solution. Doesn’t solve that boris doesn’t want anyone stopping work, mind, except himself of course. He wants to sit in a fridge till all this blows over quickly leaving “economically unproductive” casualties in its wake)

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 19:42

@fnej01 I don’t think that frustration was aimed at you ❤️

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 19:42

I'm with you @BlackeyedSusan
Also aware that I'm probably coming across as quite harsh in my prepping approach & more general chit chat. As I'm quite new here, is there another thread others recommend I'd be more suited too?

GeistohneGrenzen · 05/03/2020 19:44

Someone asked about hand sanitizer gels I bought five a couple of hours ago from eBay for £5.99 eah but the seller has raised price to £7.50 each since - still cheaper than same from other sellers. Seller is a Mrs Kronik 75% Alcohol Ecofinest Hand Sanitizer Gel Alcohol Rub Wash Bottle 60ml

GalOopNorth · 05/03/2020 19:45

Thanks Nato

I feel so conflicted. We have cases in our county, I strongly feel that by the time they are in our town it’s too late.

But I worry I am in an echo chamber in here. Feels a bit like the Matrix and I’ve taken the red pill. Though DH is not on MN and he agrees with me....so that’s a sign it’s not too much of a huge overreaction.

FuckThisWind · 05/03/2020 19:45

@fnej01 also pretty sure any frustration wasn't directed at you. Please don't be put off posting. We need this thread and each other more than ever atm.

misselphaba · 05/03/2020 19:54

@BlackeyedSusan why should we expect some workers to send their children to school whilst other families get to hunker down at home?

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 19:54

Gosh @fnej01 that is a lot to deal with, I’m so sorry to hear about those illnesses

When my dad was terminally ill, my therapist friend explained something call “anticipatory grief” which is so awful to experience

You may be feeling some anxiety over this as well as the Current epidemic situation

I’m sorry you’re going through this, please feel free to post

NatoPMT · 05/03/2020 19:56

@misselphaba I guess I feel just as disturbed that we expect life saving workers to take low salaries and long hours while bankers and corporates earn fabulous salaries and take home all the benefits

Legoandloldolls · 05/03/2020 19:57

I think the upset is directed at the people coming on saying "it's just the flu!"

I think unless people are jumping in and saying calm down, it's just the flu, more people get eating by a Trex every day!!! Then everyone has a valid point.

If people feel strongly they need to keeps kids off, then it's right for your family. It's not a option for some. But neither is right or wrong

GorkyMcPorky · 05/03/2020 19:58

Re keeping the schools open, what do you do when so many teachers have gone down with the virus that they can't be safely staffed? We are only just keeping on top of extreme behaviour as it is.

Needs must: there's going to have to be a solution to the issue of NHS staff childcare at some point.

Puppycorn · 05/03/2020 20:02

@Legoandloldolls I’m happy dh showers lol. I have underlying conditions so thankful he is on board with this. Also about dd, dd is very confident, comfortable and loves how she looks generally, But today, her black hair was tied up in a ponytail and only the hair band with long plait on one side was white. The head teacher was really kind and she complimented her after asking what’s upsetting her it seems.

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 20:04

@misselphaba
@BlackeyedSusan provided a perfectly valid point & solution. The truth is there are SAHP like myself who are quite capable of & willing to isolate their children but would prefer to do it without fear of repercussions by the government. By reducing the number of children in schools, you lessen the risk of exposure.
People who work in the health service must have known that at some point a pandemic could become a reality? A real life pandemic means harsh choices... Still wonders if I'm on the right threadHmm

sideorderofchips · 05/03/2020 20:07

I'm lucky as I work in a secondary school so if they close the schools here then I'm off anyway.

Bought some. Bottled water today. Mainly for if 8 get sick I and the kids can get at drinks etc

GorkyMcPorky · 05/03/2020 20:09

@WitchDoc why don't you volunteer to help look after the child of a HCP instead of making implicit criticism of their career choice?

GeistohneGrenzen · 05/03/2020 20:11

SingingBabooshkaBadly it was you asking about handgel - see my post further up page. Sorry the info is late, I'm having trouble keeping up!

lachy · 05/03/2020 20:11

We've been emailed today to say that we have to take our laptops home every night and to clear everything non IT related off desks at the end of each day.

There are no cases in my county as yet, but many in surrounding counties. It's a matter of time really.

My job for this weekend is to audit our Hygiene supplies with the intention of making sure we have enough toiletries to last the year. I thought that the factory lines that make shower Gel etc may have to divert to other products like cleaning products.

Also, in a similar vein I will audit my stock of sanpro & nappies - I'm tempted to switch to reusable sanpro at home, and hopefully DD will be dry at night soon!

WitchDoc · 05/03/2020 20:12

Are you for real? @GorkyMcPorky
