Is there any realistic hope of avoiding it if another household member gets it? Obviously too difficult with young children but older children and adults.

@itsnotjustflu I stopped doing it a few years ago after reading an article on germs. You get used to it. I wouldn't dream of doing it now. Wearing gloves helps ease you into it. Maybe people could dab some coloured paint on their fingers? A few blue splodges on your face might help break.the habit? Grin

PartTimeDork · 04/03/2020 15:58

I never touch my face when I am outside, mainly because I have trained myself not to do it when I have applied my makeup so nicely! Don't want to mess it up I always wash hands when I come in anyway and once make-up is off, I do tend to rub my eyes, face etc.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 15:59

UPDATE: Spain reported 51 new cases of coronavirus since last night, raising country's total to 202 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

Puppycorn · 04/03/2020 15:59

@twins2019 pickling and preserving them as chutneys last longer unless they are opened. I made a little batch of chutney from fresh mint from the garden two weeks ago to store away :) I’m also thinking to make coriander chutney as I bought some really fresh at Sainsbury’s today.
Tomorrow is book day and I really hope they shut the school doors after that. I’m getting so concerned but dh is off to London anyways. And with the numbers now I think wearing a mask isn’t a bad idea

VivaLeBeaver · 04/03/2020 16:06

Had an email about tonight’s Ocado order. Only substitution is one brand of halloumi for another.

NatoPMT · 04/03/2020 16:07

I’m really struggling with the face touching too

Turns out my hair tickles my face non stop

I’ve started picking a twig off a plant as I pass and poking at the tickle with that

Even if I tie it up, my face tickles

BridgeToTerabithia · 04/03/2020 16:10

My council is saying it is "fairly pointless" to release locations Angry

I've been prepping in a kind of "even though it will probably not be necessary" kind of way.
Sadly I am feeling more and more apprehensive and am viewing the coming months very dejectedly. I'm not envisioning the Apocalypse, but I hate being ill (even mildly),and I'm worried about various people in my family/ friends. I have my own small business, so hugely worried about the financial implications of paying all my staff SSP without income. Bleak at the prospect of losing out on my holiday, something I look forward to all year. Concerned about the economy in general.

The fact that I have been expecting something like this for years is no comfort Sad

VivaLeBeaver · 04/03/2020 16:14

I’m touching my face all the time, subconsciously. Then realise I’m doing it and think shit I haven’t washed my hands since touching a door knob, etc. I’m resigned to the fact the chances of getting it are highish. I’m actually more worried about running out of food/medicine than I am about getting it.

Two linked cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in South Ribble, Lancashire. The two people had recently travelled to Italy and are currently isolating themselves at home.

Our Director of Public Health and Wellbeing Dr Sakthi Karunanithi explains more.

We’re working with health colleagues to do everything we can to stop the virus spreading and ensure residents are protected. Their close contacts are being followed up by Public Health England.

If you haven’t been contacted by Public Health England you don’t need to do anything.

Find information and advice about how to protect yourself here ➡️ www.nhs.uk/coronavirus

If you're worried, NHS 111 has an online coronavirus service that can tell you if you need medical help and advise you what to do: 111.nhs.uk/covid-19

DP still won’t take me seriously and is insistent on taking DS to see FIL on his return from Australia on Friday. I’m freaked out by the numbers and I just want to stay at home, but realistically I’m in rural north wales so it probably won’t come here until Easter when tourist season kicks off. Not that we’ll know... I think it’s playing dirty not to announce locations.

Neome · 04/03/2020 16:17

Fortunately had a good conversation with lovely neighbour who is very much on the same page as everyone on this thread although not herself on Mumsnet. Feel better and not mad, just a bit sad about what is coming.

Blueberryham · 04/03/2020 16:18

I just had an “it’s just flu” conversation with someone again. I can’t believe people aren’t even bothering to read the facts on it

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 04/03/2020 16:19

I use a tissue to touch my face if I need to.

I have allergies, sinus trouble and asthma so cough and sneeze a lot. I also get a recurring non infectious pneumonia, symptoms are fever, cough so won't know if I am ill.

I also get nose bleeds most days so I look very dodgy if out and about,

I feel really self conscious now in the shops and at work.

Legoandloldolls · 04/03/2020 16:19

Just a note on mutations - CV is a virus with only RNA (rather than DNA). All viruses with RNA mutate frequently. it doesn't mean that it's necessarily going to be worse.

Yes anything that replicates quickly ( cant really say reproduce as a virus isn't a living thing as such) will mutate. I.e evolve ( kind of) evolution isn't a concous thing to become better, it's just a series of genetic transcription mistakes and some work out for the good of the thing mutating and some mutations are bad for it) so it is as possible it could milder as it could get worse.

I remember that from my studies, the meaning of life is "just a random happy accident"

Legoandloldolls · 04/03/2020 16:21

My eldest has stopped laughing at me. He is washing his hands and using a paper towel to touch the loo door at school

Praise the lord, he can be tought!

Maybe a good time to extend hygiene levels to his pile of dirty dishes

Destinysdaughter · 04/03/2020 16:22

My nitrile gloves arrived today from Amazon. Feel much more confident about going out, using public transport etc. May get some weird looks from pp, but frankly I really don't care!

Destinysdaughter · 04/03/2020 16:24

Australia has gone crazy buying up stocks of toilet paper!

Legoandloldolls · 04/03/2020 16:28

stupid i might be, but i wont be facing the possibility of wiping my arse on the curtains in the near future

Quietly adds adds extra curtains to my list.... .

Springinsight · 04/03/2020 16:31

I’m just back on to have a rant about DP actually because he’s self employed with his own business. His two regular customers are school groups in May/June. I commented that he should check his insurance re notifiable diseases etc, because if those two schools cancel, we are up shit creek and he will default on his mortgage very quickly. He got quite cross and refuses to even think about it and I’m so fucked off he can’t just take things fucking seriously Angry

Puppycorn · 04/03/2020 16:34

@NatoPMT I had to sign 4 deliveries today on that little device with finger and I dreaded until I washed my hands after sorting it. And the tickles I get when I use the metal spray.. I’m thinking of starting my own little factory of sanitising sprays because at this rate I think I might need some trucks of them.

EliK · 04/03/2020 16:35

Someone round the corner from me was taken away in an ambulance by people in the yellow protective suits. Does anyone know if this standard procedure now just in case?
I don't feel prepared.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/03/2020 16:36

Not standard procedure for hazmat suits so I guess your neighbour is suspected of having it. Hopefully a false alarm.
