I've got a decent stash of dried fruit as the twins enjoy but hadn't thought about pickling herbs!

Mutations

Just a note on mutations - CV is a virus with only RNA (rather than DNA).

All viruses with RNA mutate frequently.

It doesn't mean that it's necessarily going to be worse.

wheresmymojo · 04/03/2020 15:14

I'll have a look at that Sun article later but I suspect it's bollocks (re the two strains and one having a 70% CFR)

I haven't seen that in any medical papers or from any reputable sources.

WitchDoc · 04/03/2020 15:20

Reading through people's comments on other forums about their experiences of the flu, most common description is the need to stay hydrated & sleep. Although I've got a few 5ltr bottles of water, don't think I'll feel like lifting them when getting to the toilet could be a struggle.

Am going to get a supply of hand size bottles of water, lemonade, lucuzade, isotonic drinks & fruit juices that can sit on bedside tables.

10th case of #coronavirus in #Croatia

bellinisurge · 04/03/2020 15:25

Just had a work conversation about it - we can all work from home if necessary. On colleague said "There was no loo roll in the shelves when I went to the supermarket at lunch. What on Earth is the connection?".
I gently explained that people might need to go to the loo once or twice Smileif they self isolate for two weeks.
"I never thought of that ", the colleague said.
This is a highly educated colleague in a relatively senior job like me where critical thinking is what we are supposed to do - and to check each other's work on this .
I tried to be polite and join in the laughs about Netflix and chill etc.

WitchDoc · 04/03/2020 15:27

One of my kids final gcse mocks is tomorrow & every fibre of my being is telling me to make tomorrow their last day & seal the doors shut but what's the point when DH will still be going into the office?

Would anyone like to join me in bundling up the kids & preps & heading to a remote cabin in the highlands? No stops at service stations allowedGrin

itsnotjustflu · 04/03/2020 15:28

@bellinisurge oh dear.....not sure whether to laugh or cry about that one. Good news on the work front though

itsnotjustflu · 04/03/2020 15:29

@witchdoc my DH wanted to bundle us in a car and head to the highlands....then he said we had no hope as we would need to stop for petrol and a wee but yes I feel the need to go

ChilliMayo · 04/03/2020 15:29

I'm so very cross about the lack of information on locations. For those of us who quietly began their family preparations in January with no intention of adding to panic or panic buying and every intention of following government advice, this is a kick in the teeth.
My home is fully stocked, as is my medical cabinet. I am confident I can take care of family members through this, without calling upon the NHS without due cause.
But I need to know when to ramp up my preps, when to begin to stay close to home, when to shut the gate.
As a responsible adult and head of a household, I've had in mind my own parameters on distance and number of cases which will dictate my actions (and I'm nowhere near to ramping up just yet) but I need the government to trust me to take my decisions and therefore furnish me with the facts.
Give me the facts and let me sort myself out while you go on dealing with the panicking peters who are buying 753 rolls of bog paper and a pack of pepperami.

NatoPMT · 04/03/2020 15:31

Wheresmymojo it does mean that it’s harder to track and potentially vaccinate against though

The newer strain is less aggressive according to that link, but I don’t know how many points of difference it has in terms of vaccination targets

RhubarbTea · 04/03/2020 15:32

YES, everything you said ChilliMayo
I need the correct info to be able to make sensible decisions and they have taken that away from us which is horrendous.

itsnotjustflu · 04/03/2020 15:32

@ChilliMayo AND us.... I totally get you and I echo what you've said.
And lol - although DH does want me to stop for gin tonight. bah

Sunshinesky1981 · 04/03/2020 15:34

It's a similar thing with people i know who can't seem to get their head around the possibility that maybe supply issues will mean they wont be able to just get Tesco to deliver or just Eat Hmm

Had a conversation today where someone said about our local store being out of toilet roll and the person was shocked that i store extra at home and said " oh i wouldn't bother, we don't really have the space and i would just do a tesco order if we had to stay in, honestly cant believe these stupid people stocking up!!!"

  • Yes Betty it may seem stupid to you to stock up on a item that already has supply issues in the face of a possible pandemic... stupid i might be, but i wont be facing the possibility of wiping my arse on the curtains in the near future Grin
itsnotjustflu · 04/03/2020 15:35

anyone else still touching their face way too much!?!?

itsnotjustflu · 04/03/2020 15:36

@Sunshinesky1981 I quite possibly just spat my drink

Had a hospital appointment today with the ENT team. Young doctor stuck her hand out to shake mine - no thanks I replied and muttered something about having a cold.

So I suggested we bumped elbows and she was up for that and did in a packed waiting room.

Funnily she tried to shake my hand again at the end and I had to remind her “elbows only doctor”.

Gammeldragz · 04/03/2020 15:45

Lidl was. Fully stocked when I did the big shop at lunchtime. No hand gel, but plenty of all cleaning products. Lots of loo roll, they even had painkillers which they tend to be out of so got more flu capsules and ibuprofen. Got some antibac wipes for giving taps and doors a wipe down if I'm too ill/tired/lazy to get a cloth and soapy water.
Freezers and cupboards are full.

ChilliMayo · 04/03/2020 15:47

Oh, I am still stopping by Tesco's every morning on my way back from my run. There's always room for another creme egg or 6. But not 50. And I'm not after any of the in-demand stuff.
But give me the tools and I'll do the job. I absolutely support the approach authorities have taken so far, aside from this one aspect. It's like sheltering from a breaking wave - you keep paddling but when you see it nearing you dive down underneath, hold your breath, let it pass, then look for the next wave. Now we won't know when it's nearing. We've got to rely on unreliable sources such as FB and Mavis in the corner shop.

6 people positive for #coronavirus in #NY Now

Gammeldragz · 04/03/2020 15:49

DD had a stomach bug this week, and I've been using this heightened awareness of infection control in practice. Kept her to her room mostly, lots of hand-washing. Banned from the kitchen. Also observed the 48 hour rule even though she's fine today, so she's had a boring few days in her room but no one else in the house is ill (yet).

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 15:51

38 cases of #Coronavirus in #Netherlands now

MinesaPinotPlease · 04/03/2020 15:52

@ofwarren

Thanks again for all the research and reporting you do for us. It is really appreciated.

ofwarren · 04/03/2020 15:54
