Prepping for a pandemic....8

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Brain bleach needed. Envy

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that my local tile store had masks online. I looked again a few days ago, and they weren't out of stock, just no longer even on the website. I wonder if they have just taken them off online ordering so that people who actually want to do some tiling can! If you have any local tiling stores, I think they might be a good place to actually go in and find some masks.

NatoPMT · 29/02/2020 19:18

Brainfogg I’m sorry your anxiety is so difficult, I have it too, it’s a horrible feeling to have weighing on you

For what it’s worth, I’ve bought a small pack of cheap surgical masks from the pharmacy more to comply with any order to wear a mask than to keep me safe

My sister is senior A&E and she says they are only effective for a few minutes and not worth the expense

If they become compulsory, I agree they will have to be supplied

brainfogg · 29/02/2020 19:19

@nellodee I’ve noticed lots of DIY websites saying they don’t know when they’ll be getting new masks in due to unprecedented demand. Must be quite odd for them to suddenly be selling so many!
I was going to go in but I’m avoiding shops at the moment - I guess for the foreseeable - unless I absolutely have to go in. Wasn’t going to bother with masks but then I read that we should so it’s been a confusing week with knowing what to do.

brainfogg · 29/02/2020 19:20

@NatoPMT so sorry you’re struggling too, it’s absolutely awful isn’t it? How are you managing it day to day?

Thank you, that helps a bit knowing what your sister thinks, I’ve heard a lot of the same.

Funkycats · 29/02/2020 19:22

I cant link it, but found a recent telegraph article that said WHO guidelines for governments if a pandemic is officially declared, include people being provided with protective gear as necessary.

WashThoseHands · 29/02/2020 19:23

We have family in Luxembourg. They have just messaged to say that the Ministry of Health over there has just called a press conference for 9pm local time. Supposedly that it is unheard of.

Possible first case there?

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/02/2020 19:23

Homebase have FFP2 masks showing available online for click and collect. My local store has 28 available. worth checking your local store for the various different masks available. Ideally you want FFP3(N99) but FFP2 is N95 equivalent and so its certainly better than nothing. The guardian "myths" article online says that face masks give you five times more protection.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 19:24

I wouldn't be surprised wash as it's everywhere now.
I hope they stay safe Flowers

brainfogg · 29/02/2020 19:28

Hasa ok will check Homebase, I did look at some FFP2’s but they seemed pretty much the same cost as the better ones so didn’t know what to do.
After spending everything on loads of supplies we’re extremely limited now on what we can get. But it sounds like even 5 times more protection is worth it 🤔

fuckitywhy · 29/02/2020 19:34

I've been trying to avoid these threads because I can get anxious and fixated on these things.

I went to Costco just before it closed earlier - I usually go then because it's deserted and I can shop quickly and get out.

Today it was absolutely heaving and they were wiping the trolley handles as I went in ("because of coronavirus"). I gave up in the end, the queues were insane.

I think people must be stocking up.

AlohaMolly · 29/02/2020 19:45

Would you recommend trying to stock up on prescription meds? DP is on hardcore ADs that mess him right up if he comes off them!

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 19:46

Luxembourg reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 19:52

It's so hard for prescription meds *aloha"
I'm going to say something now that is very controversial and I know I will be slated for it...
One way of getting extra meds is to say you are going on holiday.
Advice from my son's consultant was to have to your meds in your hand luggage and also your suitcase in case one went missing.
We got a double prescription for when we went on holiday.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 29/02/2020 19:53

@AlohaMolly my GP (usually 30 day repeat prescriptions) has given me two months worth in the last week. I have AEDs so don't know whether that is the reason, but I think it's worth asking.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 19:53

You were right @washthosehands

preponderings · 29/02/2020 19:55

Seeing pictures and descriptions of towns being disinfected etc. Can anyone scientifically minded answer if this is going to create super resistant bugs? What's the effect on the water supply and environment of all the chemicals being sprayed over everything?

Twixes · 29/02/2020 20:03

Yes I would @AlohaMolly. I'm on ADs for anxiety and have over two months supply and have a script for another 6 that I plan on getting half of next week and maybe the rest the week after. It's going to be expensive but I'll have to buy them regardless so I might as well stock up!

Sunshinesky1981 · 29/02/2020 20:06

Any info on where the Berkshire case is yet?

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 20:06

#CANADA- Ontario reports 3 new confirmed cases of #coronavirus, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the province to 11

BridgeToTerabithia · 29/02/2020 20:11

I wish they would release town names rather than counties.

ofwarren · 29/02/2020 20:12

No info on any of the cases, no. It's a disgrace.

magicrainbowbeans · 29/02/2020 20:13

Another sanitiser question, is Milton effective for CV or is that unknown?

pemberlyshades · 29/02/2020 20:14

@preponderings that is a really valid question and a good point. It might be worth asking the Minister for the environment (no idea who that is btw) but that is definitely a really good question!
