Prepping for a pandemic....8

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 21:54

8th thread on prepping for a pandemic and following the risk of a COVID pandemic.

Anxiety

As Preppers we tend to look at a reasonable worst case scenario to plan for. Everyone is welcome on the thread but if you find it makes you anxious be kind to yourself and think about sticking to once daily updates from the BBC or similar Thanks

General COVID Info

The estimated replication rate is R= 2 to 4 based on latest expert estimates. This means each infected person spreads the virus to between 2 and 4 people. Experts estimate that, unchecked, it could infect 60% of the population.

Around 15-20% of cases are thought to be severe - that is resulting in the need for hospitalisation. Around 3-5% requiring ventilation.

The estimated mortality rate is around 1-2% at the moment (compared to 0.01-0.1% for flu). This may change as it is very difficult to estimate mortality.

Children tend to have milder symptoms. Those over 60 with underlying health issues and a history of smoking are more likely to be severe (although not exclusively this type of person).

Spread of COVID

It is estimated that the average incubation period is 3-5 days but can be as long as 24 days.

It can be spread with no symptoms.

It can be spread via droplet (cough/sneeze), aerosol (breathing same air in very close quarters), bodily fluids, fecal/oral route and formites (via surfaces, up to 28 days in the right circumstances but up to 3-5 days in more typical circumstances).

Updates

As this is a novel virus and knowledge is constantly being updated - I will post updates as they become available with links to source.

I am not a medical expert so any opinions or conjecture of my own should be taken with a pinch of salt!

Prepping Scenarios

Most of us are prepping for the following situations:

  • Wanting to stay indoors for 2-4 weeks + in case of a local outbreak / schools being closed
  • Potentially being ill with a flu type illness lasting 2-3 weeks with one or more of the household having the illness
  • Having to take a family member to hospital for COVID or any other reason during an outbreak

Prepping Items

Threads 1&2 have lists of things to think about to prep for the first scenario as do the Brexit prepping threads.

Main differences/additions to something like the Brexit list are:

  • Face masks if you can get them for any trips you have to make in public during an outbreak. These don't offer full protection and cannot be 100% relied upon but are probably better than nothing if you make sure you wear them correctly and dispose of them correctly. N95 masks are best but expensive and harder to wear, surgical face masks are second best. Dust masks are not going to help.
  • Hand sanitiser needs to be 60% or more alcohol content
  • Dettol / bleach / Miltons to disinfect. Not all disinfectants work but these three do
  • Plenty of at home/over counter treatments for flu type symptoms should you need to treat at home
  • Tissues (lots of) should you catch the virus
  • Think about meals that are easy to cook and eat should you be ill or both parents be ill at the same time (soup for example)
  • For a potential hospital trip you may want to prep a 'go bag' should you need to take someone to hospital with the virus (or anything else) during an outbreak. See Thread 1&2 for examples of what people are packing
  • Frequent and thorough hand washing, not touching your face and social distancing (no handshakes, hugs, etc) are some of the most effective ways to stay virus free

Other Thoughts

India have announced that they are stopping exports of some antibiotics, hormone treatments and vitamin supplements as they rely on China for raw materials.

Many factories that supplied fibre for use in sanitary towels and tampons are being diverted to manufacture face masks. Consider stocking up or changing to sustainable items (cloth STs, mooncup, period pants)

If you bulk buy hand gel with a high alcohol content make sure it is stored somewhere safe other than the one you’re using. It is flammable!

Thank you - we’re in wales so prescriptions are free, so I’ll be suggesting —making— DP send in his repeat this week.

NEW: U.S. CDC confirms 3 new presumptive cases of coronavirus in Washington state, including 1 person who died. One of the other patients is a health care worker.

Yes, milton works magic

Aurea · 29/02/2020 20:20

For those of you without a mask, it might be worth purchasing this. It's a micro fibre double -fabric head band that can be worn over the face.

It may stop you from touching your face and as micro fibre has fibres with a diameter of 10 micrometers may trap bacteria and viruses within the fabric.

They are quite attractive and can be used for sports and outdoor activities as well after everything has died down.

I have just ordered four for my family (buy 1 get 3 free offer). There may also be other brands available but you would need the material to be made out of microfibre rather than cotton.

PH Gloucestershire have said the Gloucestershire case is 'in the Cotswolds'. I live in the Cotswolds but it's a pretty big area so who knows

Thank you

I work at Sainsbury's.

Checked our Stock App before I started work today. Saw that we had 36 bottles of Carex Aloe Vera hand gel in stock. Went to work, none on shelf. Asked a colleague to check the warehouse. They found the box. Plus another box full. The bastards put them on the shelf without giving me first dabs! All customers today assumed we must be given hand gel free by the company. Oh no, my hand gel came from B&M weeks ago and of course they have none left.

Every single customer today has either coughed right on me, or into their hand. I've served circa 300 customers. One was coughing all over me while swigging from a bottle of cough medicine. I've scanned more dettol, antiseptic wipes, and general meds like cold and flu tablets and nasal sprays than I've ever seen.

Personally, I went to our in store pharmacy and bought surgical spirit. There's fuck all else I can do now. My Mum had cancer. I've stocked up more for her and my Dad, rather than me.

But my tongue wanted to give a darned good lashing to the couple of folk I served today who said "it's just a cold / flu"

Oh how I wish I felt so bloody dismissive.

Corsodyl · 29/02/2020 20:30

We have also bought Corsodyl which is a properly antibacterial mouthwash. Might be good to add to the handwashing routine when coming back home. We will also be having plenty of hot drinks because apparently that is good for keeping the airways flushed of oggies. (DH researched this. He's a scientist, I'm not.)

BunsyGirl · 29/02/2020 20:31

FuckThisWind

I noticed that the cashiers at Aldi yesterday each had a bottle of hand gel on their tills. My company has put some in every toilet and kitchen at work. I think you need to speak to your HR department and request that they provide some.

Just noticed my gp has authorised ALL of my repeat Rx, not just the ones I requested. Wonder if this is a policy there due to CV?

VenetoResident · 29/02/2020 20:33

Hi everyone - keeping on keeping on here.

DS2 got worse, but is now improving. We were told to take him to hospital (where all the bad CV cases are) at one point for admission for IV ABs but chose not to - concerned we wouldn't be able to stay with him if we did (we have flu symptoms but he tested negative for CV). He has ASD so staying alone would not have worked out well for him. Or me. 😥

DS1 is still up and down but not worryingly ill.

DH and I are both moderately ill - we'd probably be in work on a normal day so not desperately ill, but we've been told to self isolate for 14 days post finishing symptoms.

They're not testing people round here now unless they're ill enough to need hospital treatment. If you know someone with CV you should just self isolate.

Schools closed for another week.

We have lots of food so no concerns there. The DC are out of routine with being ill. I'd second keeping to routines - we've been getting them up and feeding them at set times as they get better regardless of hunger just so they get back to normal sleep routines.

By rights we should be able to say something strong to the idiots who think its ok to cough all over us but I doubt the stores would back us up. Am in tomorrow and will be pulling my jacket over my face and turning away if any git starts coughing all over me. If they say anything I will be telling them I dont want their germs thank you so please stop coughing over me. Hopefully shame them into thinking twice next time I doubt it though

pemberlyshades · 29/02/2020 20:33

I've had an email through from wowcher with an offer on face masks- I've already got 10 disposable fpp3 masks and another reusable one so I don't need more- but they are quite a good deal- I worry that they are poor quality they don't cite any kind of filtration standard or manufacturing origin-

FuckThisWind · 29/02/2020 20:35

@BunsyGirl yes I noticed that too yesterday in Aldi. I'm going to put a message on our group social media now.

Willow2017 · 29/02/2020 20:37

I will be over the moon if my lot decide to supply the cashiers with hand gel! Not holding my breath though.

U.S. CDC says coronavirus patient who died in Washington state was a man in his 50s, not a woman as reported by Trump

JustVisiting9 · 29/02/2020 20:42

I went to B&M today and the food section looked like the end of days. There were no teabags left. At all.

The tins, noodles and cleaning aisle had been decimated.

Plenty of batteries though, which is what I went in for.

NewYearNewTwatName · 29/02/2020 20:42

Not sure if this helps anyone but rubbing alcohol (surgical spirit) is still readily available and relatively cheap. 5lts for £18.99 with a separate spray bottle to use.

I sure I saw 5ltrs with out the spray bottle for £15.99 as well.

Good to hear from you Veneto.

People on YouTube are talking about reusing the single use, paper masks by either ironing them, microwaving them or leaving them in the sun for a few days as uv light will kill off viruses.

Anyone know if any of this will work?
