Yes, I shouted. Sorry to your internet ears. Just hide the bloody topic.

Anyone else sort of looking forward to the Zombie Apocalypse now? We can eat all the mean non-preppers. That is a joke in case any special snowflakes think I will actually eat them.

I like the bunker too

Zetetic · 11/11/2015 11:29

I love the Czech bunker. How about these for going over the top? Grin

I really want to go and see the seed vault so if any one works there please send me a PM.

AGnu · 11/11/2015 14:30

I've also added things like tinned fruit & condensed milk or rice pudding for desserts. Pretty basic but should see us through for a week. We're city-based & not far from a main road so I'd be surprised if we had to survive more than a couple of days, unless there really was a zombie apocalypse! I had no idea that one could purchase such a wide array of chicken-in-sauce meals in tins!

I have nothing against the Prepping board or any of those who are frantically preparing for a supposed zombie apocalypse. But could you at least provide your addresses and a summary of your prepping efforts? This would assist me in deciding whose home to storm in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Because I am lazy and can barely manage to prep for the week ahead, let alone the end of the world.

AGnu · 11/11/2015 14:38

I want a castle now.

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2015 14:40

My problem is still (and I hope it's OK to say this in this particular thread) is that most examples of "prepping" on here seem to me to be indistinguishable from "doing a weeks worth of shopping".

FreeWorker1 · 11/11/2015 14:50

Bertrand - actually skip that. Its the desire to visceral will to live by clinging on to life at all costs is what drive us on. Hoping we can still live without popping down to the Tesco Metro is what we are 'preparing for.

Zetetic · 11/11/2015 14:58

It is fair enough to say it. So if you have done a weeks worth of shopping you may have enough food and water for say a long power cut. If that is all it takes to make you happy then that is great. Other people like to consider other stuff.

Preparedness is more the state of being prepared or a state of mind, thinking of possibilities eg. fire precautions, fitting smoke alarms, natural risks where you live, medication needs, travel stuff, anything that might affect you.

Did you know that when fire drills are simulated in tests only 15% of people react? Some people just sit and wait to see what everyone else does. Others finish phone calls or e mails.

So preparedness is about more than food and one individual might be able to learn from another person's point of view.

If you have a look on the Prepping site (or whatever it may be renamed) there are loads of threads about different subjects!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/11/2015 15:16

So what Bertrand, so what? If we want to discuss whether we have a weeks shopping stocked up or a years worth what's it to you? Or whether we buy a generator or a camping stove, and want to discuss that. Why does it bother you? Or whether it's best to have gold, or cash or bank reserves? Why shouldn't we be able to discuss it?

It is no different to me going on to Style & Beauty and saying "why are you lot discussing which dress/jeans/handbag haven't you? Why are you discussing it? I don't get it?"

swisscheesetony · 11/11/2015 15:33

Ignore the naysayers, I was reading a thread on another board today and one of them popped up there to whine at the op for doing something she didn't "get". We all have out hobbies it would seem.

KatharineClifton · 11/11/2015 15:37

Cheers Grin

FreeWorker1 · 11/11/2015 15:39

I've just had two gas fires in my house converted back to open fires with fully functioning chimneys so we can burn wood and coal.

We have both gas fired and electric powered showers. We could at least use an open fire to heat a kettle.

I have good quality saws and axes to cut wood. We have wood fuel nearby. I have the skills and the tools to repair our house, grow food and gather fuel.

Its not complete back woodsman preparedness as we live on the edge of a town but if things showed signs of going pear shaped we can crank up our preparedness quite quickly.

We have a storeroom under our house that was built as a cold store in the early 1800s and it is good for storing fresh food for a few days as well preserved, tinned, dry and so on. We just had it water proofed, dry lined and painted. We could get a years worth of food in there.

I am not sat in the dark muttering about zombies. I have lived in the countryside though and I know what can go wrong and how being prepared for the inevitable eventualities is a big part of life in the countryside.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/11/2015 15:39

One of our very own naysayers swiss? Someone making a habit of stirring up trouble?

Hopefully they'll get bored soon and leave us to it.

SenecaFalls · 11/11/2015 15:43

It's certainly not a "hobby" where I live. I don't do it for fun. I do it because being prepared for a hurricane is literally a life and death matter.

swisscheesetony · 11/11/2015 15:49

seneca tongue firmly in cheek with use of the word "hobby".

SenecaFalls · 11/11/2015 15:52

I think we need a tongue-in-cheek emoticon on here. Smile

Stratter5 · 11/11/2015 16:33

Lol swiss I spotted one whinging that there had to be more to something than what the OP was saying; was quite a foot stamping little post.

Most of the scoffers seem to be pretty much full time goady fuckers; the rest have either popped in for a look here, and stayed, or were just hanging on coat tails and have got bored.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/11/2015 18:41

I am loving this board.Grin

This summer I made the family learn some really useful prepping skills: lighting a fire, water purification, foraging, building basic shelters archery and kayaking. So we have some skills come ZA.

And, this board has given me the kick up the ass I need to sort out a proper emergency cupboard.

It's sad, but not unpredictable that some Mnetters have come to scoff and dismiss women whose interests are different to theirs. Cos you know, unless you're doing stuff the way they do it, you're doing it all wrong.Shock

I don't mind it becoming the Bunker.

FuckTheseSixFishInParticular · 15/11/2015 13:19

I think it might be a good idea to have one of the gentler 'What the Jeff is Prepping?' type of threads stickied at the top of the board, for newcomers to have a browse of, instead of just starting another 'You're all loonies but now I've bought 6 tins of beans and some candles' thread.

Also sure, call it The Bunker. I wasn't in favour before, but then I wasn't expecting this amount of vitriol either!

speckofdust · 15/11/2015 14:55

I always took it that MN zombie apocalypse threads were prepping threads. I thought there was an unspoken understanding that on MN we say 'zombie apocalypse' instead of 'TSHTF', but that alongside the joking people are basically talking about prepping. We just do it in a much more MN way than elsewhere on the internet. I love the name OFRS rather than BOB, though I don't know where it came from originally.

In that spirit I'd go for a forum called 'The Winchester' (from Shaun of the Dead).

speckofdust · 15/11/2015 14:59

I have been away from MN for a couple of years so have missed all the previous discussion tho!

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/11/2015 15:55

The Winchester isn't bad. Although we have a poster with a similar name so she might get a big head Grin
