Failed abortion- now 22 weeks.

Hello,

I had an abortion at 9 weeks. Turns out that it failed. I’m now 22 weeks, I’ve had a scan& the baby is perfectly healthy& growing fine. I’m just petrified of any birth defects it might have? Are there more chances of disabilities such as autism due to taking the medication?

If it’s the case, in all honestly, I don’t mind. It’s just playing in my mind.

Thank you xx

Hi

Ntk3010 · 10/02/2022 14:51

@RAM29 can I ask you some questions?

RAM29 · 11/02/2022 14:02

@Ntk3010 yes of course x

Ntk3010 · 14/02/2022 12:14

@RAM29 a friend of mine is pregnant, her man give her miso fem 200mcg,she take it in the night saw a small bleed in the morning and some stomach pain after that nothing more, after 8 week's she found out that she is still pregnant, and the pregnant has gone far that the parents become aware and ask her to keep the pregnancy as am talking to u now the pregnant is 5 month going to 6, and we're worried of any effect.

RAM29 · 14/02/2022 14:25

@Ntk3010 I can’t comment on that drug as that’s not what I had.
But I can say with what happened to me I’ve got a very happy lovely healthy 16 month old now. And I’m grateful every day that it didn’t work.
Your friend needs to see the doctors and be monitored and have tests, they will be able to advise more, and may be able to see any problems on a ultrasound x

Ntk3010 · 15/02/2022 14:03

@RAM29sorry to ask, what type of drugs do u use during ur own?

Fromagerie · 16/02/2022 18:44

Please try not to worry! I think your friend and her baby will be fine. See this thread with many stories about healthy babies being born after a failed medical abortion:

www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/pregnancy-terminations-1161/unplanned-pregnancy-46/1758695-failed-abortion-anyone-continued-experiences-please.html

Especially see page 8 of the thread, which shows a printout from an abortion provider in the UK reporting data from the UK National Health Service (I’m not sure where you’re located), which says that the birth defect rate does not get any higher after you have misoprostol:

www.netmums.com/coffeehouse/pregnancy-terminations-1161/unplanned-pregnancy-46/1758695-failed-abortion-anyone-continued-experiences-please-8.html

So, it’s unlikely that there will be birth defects. Even if there are, it sounds like the baby will be loved by their grandparents and probably by their mom as well, and can still have a good life. It’s so good that she has her parents’ support for continuing with the pregnancy. Will be wishing all the best for her and for everyone involved! You’re a good friend for helping her.

What is the best time to have a scan

Fromagerie · 16/02/2022 21:01

I'd say as soon as possible. It's usual to have one around this time for any pregnancy.

Ntk3010 · 17/02/2022 06:20

Thanks for the response

Did your pregnancy symptoms go after pills then return ?

hannah49220 · 03/05/2022 16:34

Hey all,

I am a few years late but an update on how you and youre baby are doing would be so helpful. I am going through this now. Failed medical abortion at 5 weeks, im worried about defects. I would like to keep it as it must be meant to be bit dont want to be selfish if there are issues.

BobbieJean89 · 24/05/2022 14:41

Hello to all. I am Very late to this thread, but this is the only place I have really seen people giving there experiences with a failed medical abortion. I had a medical abortion with mifeprestone and misoprostol at 8 weeks. I had mild cramping and Lots of bleeding, even passing a couple of large clots that evening. Bleed lightly for about a week. The pregnancy symptoms I was having dissipated, so we thought everything was okay. I started taking pregnancy tests at 2 weeks post abortion and continue to get positives. After still getting positives at 4 weeks post abortion, they scheduled me for a follow up. I ended up going to a clinic closer to my house so that I didn't have to travel. As soon as we did the ultrasound we discovered I was 4 months pregnant. The abortion had failed, but I couldn't believe it with the bleeding and clots I had. I had told the technician about the bleeding and thought that I had potentially just gotten pregnant immediately after and she thought the same. We were expecting to see about a 7 week baby on the scan. Boy was I shocked! I will be going for a full anatomy scan next week, but I have been beside myself thinking that something could be wrong because of the medication that I took. I am so nervous. The baby appeared okay in the small routine ultrasound they did, but they only do the basic at that clinic and make sure it's not ectopic and there is a heartbeat. Can any of you mom's tell me if you delivered the past couple of years and if everything was okay?

Bans7310 · 26/05/2022 01:04

Hi,
I had the same concerns. My abortion failed at 10 weeks and I now have a healthy and happy 2 month old baby girl. My doctor told me everything looked normal and that I had no reason to worry about anything. No birth defects no complications. She did come 6weeks early so she was a premie, however lungs were strong and she only stayed in there until she gained enough weight so that she could get released. This was the only place that gave me hope when making the decision to continue the pregnancy. To me the failed was a sign to keep. I hope you are doing well and baby is ok.

RAM29 · 26/05/2022 06:12

Hi,
Very very similar situation to you both.
I had scans each month that showed no issues and I have a happy healthy 19 month old ☺️
Hope your ok xx

Hi everyone,
I had a failed abortion at 5 weeks and now I am 10 weeks and 3 days. The clinic said there is strong heart beat but of course I need to go for extra scans. I am worried about defects. Anyone wants to share their story. And @HANS2015 how are you and your baby.

Sunshinele · 27/05/2022 09:43

@Stacey2122 Hi, how did you find out the termination had failed? I took the medication 3 weeks ago but still getting really strong positive lines on pregnancy tests. Did you still have pregnancy symptoms? I really don’t feel pregnant but they’ve told me to test again in another week, feel like I’m stuck in limbo xx

Andrea16 · 27/05/2022 20:56

Hello, I’m going through the same issue. I had a medical abortion done last Saturday. I thought everything went well. I had lost of cramping (severe), passing blood clots & heavy bleeding. The next day I felt great. My nausea was gone. Problem is yesterday all my symptoms came back. The nausea, my breast a extremely sore & I’m tired again. Not to mention I’ve been vomiting all day. I’m going in tomorrow for a scan. Idk how to feel if the abortion in fact failed.

Sunshinele · 28/05/2022 08:55

@Andrea16 hope all goes well at your scan. I’m going to call the early pregnancy unit on Monday see if I can get in for a scan so I can find out what’s going on.

CatSeany · 28/05/2022 09:16

Assuming you had mifepristone +/- misoprostol then no. They act on the mother rather than the foetus.

Stacey2122 · 28/05/2022 22:45

hi
i have a strong termination pregnancy test. So I booked an appointment and my baby was bouncing and alive. I didn’t feel pregnant like morning sickness etc. i only had bigger boobs (sometimes tender) and fatigue. I thought my period was coming.

Just an update: I went to have an anatomy scan today and everything looked great. Our baby is healthy in every way! There were no issues to be seen at all from the medication abortion failing. We are now at 17 weeks now

LisaSimpson1984 · 01/06/2022 17:10

It’s interesting that so many of the failed abortions on this thread seem to be kept and wanted now. Great of course. But interesting.

Shasha83 · 02/06/2022 17:00

Hi everyone!
I’m reading from outside of the UK, but I’m currently experiencing the same. Had a tough time deciding abortion or not, and at 9 weeks I did go trough with it, it’s misoprostol alone where I’m at. Had some bleeding that evening and cramping but nothing more than a regular day of menstruation. Following day it almost immediately stopped but I thought it had done it’s job.

At my follow up a week later my doc already found it very odd that I had minimal bleeding and he did an ultrasound where we saw baby was still there growing and having a strong heartbeat.

I decided to continue with the pregnancy although I feel bad and ashamed for what I did, but I’m excited and happy it didn’t work after all. I really had a bad week the week of abortion as in constant crying and wishing I could do over that day. So getting the news at the follow up felt
like a miracle. So far all looks good I got a nipt test that came back good also. 13 weeks now so the next (big) ultrasound will be the 20 weeks scan.

hope everyone of you ladies have a healthy pregnancy and baby xoxo
