Feeling really rough atm, I threw up water first thing this morning and have only managed some toast. I have my first appt with the midwife tomorrow and I'm nervous I'll be to ill to even go.

Superscientist · 03/12/2024 17:31

Have you spoken to anyone about antiemetics @LifeonMarss ?
I struggle with water but coping better with smoothie and herbal teas but it takes me the whole day to sip at a small cup. From about 5 onwards I can drink a bit better so I try to hydrate then.
I'm on metoclopramide and cyclizine and have found the combination more helpful than cyclizine alone.

Your hospital doesn't seem very efficient..🙈 or maybe as you're still very early, they are waiting for you to be 6 weeks? When I self-referred at 6 weeks, I got a text 2 days later with a date for my booking appointment, and then quickly received letters in the post for my combined blood test (has to be before the 12w scan I believe) and 12 weeks scan. It was all sorted quickly even before I saw the midwife

@Julilie93 @Nomnomnew i called them today as think I'm 6 weeks today, they called back and left a voicemail to say I should hear back when I'm between 7-9 weeks but they have a backlog

laalaaleelee · 03/12/2024 22:59

@Superscientist after you suggested getting meds rather than wait for the sickness on top of the constant nausea, I got meds off dr. Nausea has constant and unbearable over last few days. Thanks for giving me the kick up the bum. It has at least taken the edge off so feels more manageable.

Nomnomnew · 04/12/2024 06:57

I had some spotting last night and my sickness has calmed down a lot. Feeling very worried. Going to call the midwives this morning and try and find out what’s going on. I told several friends yesterday I was pregnant because I’m now off work due to the sickness so it feels like awful timing too (not that there would be a good time obviously)

@Nomnomnew sorry you’ve started spotting. What week are you?
my ivf clinic told me it’s so so common in pregnancy - they said imagine trying to re-plumb your whole house while the water is on. It’s like that, and you’re gonna get spotting. It helped me when I had some early on at like 5w

sorry tmi question but what colour is it? See what the midwife says. And is your MS worst first thing? Mine isn’t too bad in the morning but builds from about 10/11am. Plus it ebbs and flows. I had a symptom free weekend and naturally thought the worst, but Monday and yesterday got hit with the worst MS I’ve had.

GCS34 · 04/12/2024 08:29

This is going to sound dumb but is this indigestion? I’ve never had it before. 🙈

It feels like pressure around my ribs, and like I’ve eaten a big meal and it’s sat resting on my stomach only I’ve not eaten yet. And I’m very burpy and nauseous (doesn’t usually start this early in the morning but it’s decided to today, perfectly timed for a meeting in London)😭

Thanks @GCS34 I’m 9 weeks today. Last night it seemed like it was a bit more each time I went to the loo so I was expecting it to worsen overnight, but thankfully it seems to have eased off and is brown / pink not bright red. The midwife said it’s probably not concerning but to keep an eye and call back if I have any more worries. Yes you’re right, it does ebb and flow generally, but I had such an improved day yesterday it seemed quite worrying. I will just have to wait and see, but I’m more nauseous again today so perhaps yesterday was just a fluke.
My MS is all day but worse the more tired I am and first thing before I’ve eaten. I’m under the hyperemesis clinic at my hospital and they’re trying to book a scan in for that anyway, so hopefully that might happen soon and we might get some reassurance. The not knowing is so hard!

Pricklypickles · 04/12/2024 10:25

Has anyone else's nausea evolved into just being insanely and aggressively hungry, like a sicky empty pit feeling in the stomach when you don't eat every 2 hours?
I'm around 10+ weeks now. I don't remember this feeling being so strong in my previous pregnancy. It is taking total control of me!

Really didn't want to gain too much weight this time being already heavier than I wanted to be pre-pregnancy, but it's definitely happening. Having a real mind / body war at the moment.

I don't have MS or nausea really, but as soon as I am hungry I NEEEED to eat, that's the only time I feel nauseous. I'm a lot hungrier than usual, I have already gained 3 pounds, definitely eating for 2 🙈

Yes, same here. Had this in my first pregnancy too. If I didn’t eat small and often I felt so unwell.

@Pricklypickles yes! I flit from nausea and indigestion and no room for food, to a bottomless pit that rumbles if it hasn’t had 2/3 hour feeds. I’m in the former today and feeling insanely uncomfortable and my bra hurts to be on as it’s pressing where my indigestion is. Anyone else? I am 9+4 today and understand ‘peak’ symptoms are 9/10 weeks. Anyone vouch for that and that hopefully things will improve?

@Superscientist good luck for tomorrow what time is your scan?

dr is ringing back next week to see how I’m getting on with the cyclizine so I might ask them about the other medication then as it’s not really doing much on its own for me either.

I had my booking appt and all went well and thankfully low risk, she did give me some vitamin D tablets but I’m always deficient in that so not really surprised

I have tried prochlorpreazine previously as well. It was better than cyclizine for me but not as good as the metoclopramide.
First line of treatment is one antiemetics and second line is two but usually you have to try a couple before getting two.

It's only with doing more reading about hyperemesis I have realised that I probably previously underplayed sickness. They count each heave as a vomit whereas I would count trips to the toilet. This changed my sickness from say 5 times a day up to 15-20+ times. Keep an eye on weight loss (5% is often used but I've had concerns with less than that so do mention it even if it's "only" a few lb) and decreased frequency of urinating- I'm still probably not good at stressing this - currently feel a lot weaker on days when i only pee in the morning and evening. If I end up back at the GP again I'm going to ask them to clarify what I should be doing rather than answering "yes I can wee".
I also hadn't been keeping track of heaving which also can be factored into assessing severity.

I’m sorry you’re struggling so much @Superscientist. Mine is ramping up now but nowhere near the level of my first pregnancy where I had multiple hospitalisations, I think because I’ve been on medication from the first day I found out I was pregnant this time. I’m hoping to stay out of hospital and be able to be present at some Christmas stuff, rather than in bed or hospital.

One thing I found helpful for getting through to medical professionals how I meant I LITERALLY couldn’t drink or eat was home ketone test sticks. PSS doesn’t like them using ketones and it’s not meant to be a good measure, but it was an easy thing I could check at home and if I called 111 and said ‘I’ve got 4+ ketones’ they’d get me to hospital right away whereas if I called and said I was struggling to eat or drink anything, they never seemed to believe I meant that very literally.

Have you contacted pregnancy sickness support? You can email or WhatsApp them if you don’t feel up to calling, but they’ll send you lots of info on medications, how to advocate for yourself and what you need to be telling the docs for them to understand how bad it is for you.

I have some sticks! I bought them in my last pregnancy and have used them a few times to keep track of symptoms.
I've seen the same GP and she has horrid pregnancy sickness too so has been understanding and proactive. I was sick 3 times during the appointment and twice in the waiting room which made it easier to get across how hard it was.
Thankfully by the evening I can drink a bit better so its keeping the dehydration at bay.

Unfortunately my scan wasn't good this morning. It has grown but less than they would expect for a 2 week wait. No heartbeat either but that's not inconsistent with the size. It looks like it's another miscarriage. I'm going back for another scan in a week with a different sonographer but at this point it's highly unlikely this pregnancy will continue.

@Superscientist I'm so sad to read this. Did it allign with the amount of growth they'd expect from the 'new' date they gave you from the scan 2 weeks ago? What did they date you as?

Did they give any inclination about what they thought? I'm so sorry you're having to go through this again and wait yet another week. xx

Superscientist · 05/12/2024 11:19

@GCS34 there was a larger pregnancy sack but the growth wasn't consistent with 2 weeks. I should have been 9+4 based on lmp or 7-8 weeks be based on previous scan and it was smaller than both dates. No heartbeat and there was a flicker of something 2 weeks ago. They didn't give a date for this scan but even a complete novice I could see there wasn't much change from last time.
She said it's highly likely to be another missed miscarriage. The scan next week is to confirm and she'd like someone else to do it to get a second opinion. I'm over 35 and she suggested I would qualify for counselling and potentially investigations under the reoccurring miscarriage clinic

houwseevryweekend · 05/12/2024 11:25

@Superscientist I'm so so sorry to hear this. And even more painful that it's another week before they formally confirm it. This is my worry for my own case too - if there's no heartbeat or it's faint or embryo hasn't grown proportionate to the time between scans i'm accepting it's non viable. Missed miscarriages are even more cruel with all the waiting even when you know it's bad news. Flowers

Superscientist · 05/12/2024 11:32

Thanks @houwseevryweekend
It is. I've got a horrid cold and it's zapping the little energy I had. I could use some proper meds and a hot toddy would me nice right about now!

I hope you get better news that we did. As soon as I was measuring more than a week behind I was prepared for the worst
