Hi all,

I’m currently at 6 weeks and recently did my self-referral.

The first midwife appointment I can get is in early October (around 15 weeks) - is that normal? I thought I’d get a Booking Appointment before my first scan which is mid-Sept.

They’ve said they’ll notify me of any cancellations so I’ll hope for that! I’m wondering if I should have referred to a different hospital - I’m fortunate to have two options within 15 mins of me.

Thanks!

That seems quite late. Would the dating scan be arranged separately because that needs to be between 10 and 14 weeks.
The second midwife appointment is meant to be at 16 weeks.
It might be worth asking if you would be seen quicker at the other hospital or if you could see a midwife at your GP surgery

Little late in my opinion. How will the midwife sort your first 12 week scan? I had my booking appointment at 6 weeks and she said then that she will refer me over to get my first scan and they'll send a letter in the post with the date which they did a few days later.. I was given my 16 week midwife appointment then too. I know some hospitals are more busy with less availability so that's probably why but I would try the other hospital and see if they have any closer availability..

Ellsx6 · 30/07/2024 10:25

@Superscientist
I was so sick 8w1/8w2 then disappeared 😅I'm glad to see the back of it but it did worry me so glad everything's still okay..will you get an early scan or wait until 12 weeks? X

Mrbay · 30/07/2024 10:57

Morning all!

Sounds like week 8 is common for symptoms to ease which is reassuring.

Feeling motivated today so I'm gonna wash the carpet! The horse had a bath too so tiredness is easing. To be honest, I'm putting off the one email I need to send before I return back to work tomorrow.

@wildhay I'm sorry, it's such a worrying time. Bleeding and cramping doesn't necessarily mean a loss, it can be a clot from your lining that has come loose. Call epu and I'm sure they will scan you as long as you are over 5 weeks.

@Mitzington yeah that is late. This pregnancy is my 2nd baby (hopefully) and my booking appointment is week 9. I would ask if the other unit has space to see you sooner.

Even though this is 2nd time round for me, I feel like I've forgotten all things baby!

Superscientist · 30/07/2024 11:06

@Ellsx6 I'm glad I'm not alone. I'm still being quite sick but the relentless nausea has gone so I can eat and drink in between being sick. With my daughters pregnancy it kept coming back so I hope it stays like this this time around

We will wait for the 12 week scan. I like to live in ignorance! I have a tendency towards being obsessive so I don't think they would offer me reassurance. I did the same with my daughter. I also only do 1 test to avoid overthinking the results. I'm 9 weeks today and have 3 weeks to wait for my scan.

wildhay · 30/07/2024 11:07

Update from me, bleeding has stopped, private scan with my IVF clinic is tomorrow (6weeks) really hoping to confirm the pregnancy is ongoing but trying to keep calm and mentally prepare myself. Going to be a long 24 hours

In Northern Ireland there is no midwife appointment prior to the 12 week scan. You self refer and the first time you hear anything will be a letter inviting you to the scan itself.

GPs want nothing to do with it either, they just tell you to contact the maternity ward or the EPU.

MarchingOnwards · 30/07/2024 11:33

Hi all, just wanted to share an update for reassurance for anyone looking for it.

this is my third pregnancy following two missed miscarriages and I’ve had very little by way of symptoms - naturally I was expecting the worst, but just had a 7 week scan under recurrent miscarriage clinic and baby was measuring 7+5 with a strong heartbeat! I was so surprised - still a long way to go, but this is the furthest we’ve ever got!

sorry to those going through loss or concern at the moment, just wanted to share a bit of reassurance for anyone struggling with lack of symptoms.

ConfusedCrab · 30/07/2024 11:44

I haven’t heard anything back from the hospital re booking in / scan, I registered on ‘my pregnancy notes’ as they asked but nothing else has happened. Should I be chasing? I’m only just nearly 6 weeks so early days I guess.

Also no real symptoms here either really

Ellsx6 · 30/07/2024 11:54

@Superscientist your willpower is amazing! Even if I tried to wait my anxiety would've made me cave im awful 😂im someone who'd like to know sooner rather than later so hoping by weekly scans I'll catch a problem sooner than waiting..I've never had a loss before but still have extreme anxiety about MC. It seems a lot of people first time pregnancy's MC from what I've read on here so I'm extra extra scared although after seeing a heartbeat at 9 weeks is supposedly just as good as seeing one at 12 and very low chance of something going wrong from here so that's nice to know!💓

Mrbay · 30/07/2024 12:06

@wildhay - ah! I didn't see it's an ivf pregnancy, bleeds are super common due to the embryo transfer causing a hematoma which then bleeds. Very best of luck tomorrow, I remember how nerve racking the first scan is after the roller coaster that is ivf. My 1st daughter is via ivf.

Melusina123 · 30/07/2024 12:31

@wildhay fingers crossed for your scan. Bleeding isn't always the end! It's not normal per se, but it is common.

@Mitzington that is v late, the NICE guideline is that it should happen by 10+0. Sometimes the receptionists don't get it though, if everything is busy. I had a similar issue later on last time where they basically couldn't offer me an antenatal appointment for so long that it was effectively the next one. I eventually rang the midwife helpline and said, "I want a named clinician to confirm in writing it is fine for me to miss this appointment," and then a midwife rang me back and found me an appointment a week later. 🤷‍♀️

IMBCRound2 · 30/07/2024 13:35

Not cramping but a sudden backache …. Should I be prepared for the worse ? I’m on progesterone so unlikely to have any bleeding. Everything I read said it’s like period backache but I’ve never experienced any so not sure what I should/shouldn’t be feeling .

had minor backache for weeks but this feels different.

scan booked for 11 days time but if I’m out , I’d like to drop the medication sooner.

Might be ligaments in the back stretching from the hormonal change? I have had 3 miscarriages and every time the cramps felt like period pain, like a ‘breaking down’ kind of pain. Can you get an earlier scan? Call EPU?

I am 6 weeks tomorrow and also on progesterone - analysing every symptom. This is the furthest I’ve got without bleeding in the last 18 months but worried the progesterone may be masking symptoms.

IMBCRound2 · 30/07/2024 14:18

I don’t think so - I was really unwell at the weekend and contacted them in regards to that and they wouldn’t offer one so I doubt they’ll offer it for this. I got the sense that because they couldn’t do any interventions at this stage there wasn’t any point.

I guess I could pay for one but ever since someone made a comment about early scan places exploiting women and their health anxieties I can’t bring myself to give them any money! (I have an early scan via my IVF clinic otherwise I wouldn’t be having one at all)

m00ngirl · 30/07/2024 14:27

Thanks @Melusina123 I did get the lucozade although it came straight back up! After two days bed bound I'm on the mend now. I haven't had food poisoning for about 20 years, I don't eat meat or fish etc, I got it from a bloody salad - such bad luck! Just a warning to others I suppose that apparently we are more susceptible to food poisoning during pregnancy so be extra careful eating out, washing leaves, etc.

Melusina123 · 30/07/2024 14:28

Eek @IMBCRound2 was that me? 😱 I'd still definitely go for a private scan if I needed one! (I got lucky and convinced EPAU to do one due to past miscarriages but I've had private scans in the past.) And I wouldn't count yourself out because of a backache. Aches and pains are so so normal.

FWIW lots of people have reported their dr's saying progesterone wouldn't stop a miscarriage if it was meant to be. I was on progesterone last pregnancy and still spotted for several weeks.

Your EPAU is stingy with the scans! It's so bad there's such variation across the trusts. Sometimes the pathway is different if you present to A&E so if you're really worried then you could do that or depending where you are there might be another EPAU. You don't have to go to the same EPAU as the hospital you're registered at.

Oh no, glad you're on the mend! Sounds awful. I'm vegetarian too, but I'm so suspicious of premade salads and sandwiches, I'd say for no good reason but you've validated my paranoia. 😱

Superscientist · 30/07/2024 14:58

It is probably a good idea for us all to be washing salads they have been behind a few recent outbreaks of food poisoning.
Glad you are now on the mend @m00ngirl

Haha - no it was my manager in a totally unrelated conversation but it stuck with me.

It seems like there is such a difference - with my first I had to fully beg for one after I fell down a full flight of stairs further on in my pregnancy so I wasn’t entirely surprised they were reluctant at this stage. I was pretty shocked to see how many people on here were getting EPU scans at 5/6 weeks .

Melusina123 · 30/07/2024 15:42

@IMBCRound2 ahhh. We were taking about the same thing up thread. I had a dreadful experience at a private scan that diagnosed an MMC, the sonographer and her assistant were so awkward about it! Then had a very meh experience at a private scan that found all was well (different pregnancy obviously) but it felt very transactional. It's definitely a whole industry built around making ££ off stressed women. But I'd still partake if I was sure it was what I needed (and if my EPAU was being incredibly stingy about scans!).

How is the back pain?

seenomore1579 · 30/07/2024 16:15

Hi all
I posted here a couple of weeks ago when I first got my bfp.
I went for a private early pregnancy scan, I wanted to check for a heartbeat to calm my anxiety.
All looks good and it measured 7w2d which is a bit further than I thought so that puts my due date at 16 March 2025.
This is starting to feel real!

seenomore1579 · 30/07/2024 16:31

I have my booking appointment on Friday when I'll be almost 8 weeks.
I self referred just over a week ago and they offered me the appointment a day later.
I'm shocked that it's taking so long for some people to get their booking appointment.
My appointment letter for the 12 week scan has also arrived already before my booking appointment, that's gonna be on the 2nd September which seems just right based on my scan today.
Seems like the maternity services at my hospital are running pretty well.
I used a different hospital last time around, I had a great experience but have been hearing bad experiences from other people and various places online and the maternity services have also since been downgraded by CQC to requires improvement.
The hospital I'm using this time has had great CQC reports last year and I've heard increasingly positive experiences from others so I hope I've made the right choice.

Superscientist · 30/07/2024 17:10

@IMBCRound2 I was in a car accident at 70mph on the motorway at 15+5 when expecting my daughter. The epu refused to see me because I was too far along and the maternity ward wouldn't see me because I wasn't yet 16 weeks.
I was left in limbo told to watch out for bleeding and for movements, which hadn't started, stopping. Thankfully I had a midwife appointment at 3 days later and she checked me over but it was a long 3 days wait!
