@BMK keep us updated.. I will be up multiple times during the night anyway 🤣 hope it’s not too long of a wait for you and you’re able to get some rest in between times

CityKity · 07/08/2023 07:35

Good luck @DesertSnow and @BMK !

Thanks for all the well wishes! None of the worries I had before about the flat / having a nursery / being prepared mean a thing now the little guy is here. We’ve had a weekend of family visits, and all anyone cares about is the gorgeous new addition.

Recovery is going well I think. Baby boy is 6 days old, treated us to an amazing sleep last night and has just lost his umbilical stub.
I had stitches which the mid wife will check today so will see how those are doing, but I’ve finally had a number 2 on day 4 post birth which I was nervous about but was totally fine!

sprollie11 · 07/08/2023 07:42

Hi all! I am now 5 days overdue with no signs of anything happening - does anyone have any top tips about staying patient? Starting to feel grumpy and irritable! Thanks x

BMK · 07/08/2023 09:51

Oh my goodness that was absolutely horrendous!!!!! Baby born around half3 I think and was absolutely terrible. Turned out baby was back to back and was trying to turn and also had a second or internal sac of fluid around her which was preventing her from descending despite the contractions so I and baby were exhausted and contractions lessening. Sac burst and I got there in the end but due to.position of baby, yet unturned or sth and back to back, the urge to push was absent and it was really difficult. However I don't want to put anyone off as I chose to only have gas and air and my baby was breech then turned which added complications and then was back to back and with an undiscovered sac of fluid still in front of her head preventing progress with labour despite contractions- so a "comedy" of unusual factors converging! Thank God it's over. She is in NICU however but I hope it's just due to fluid in lungs (which is relatively frequent) and not an infection which is one of other possibilities. @DesertSnow it wasn't the 6th for me; I wonder how you ard getting on?*wasn't today your section day? After ehat I've gone through (albeit unusual circumstances) I think you might be a bit fortunate!!

BMK · 07/08/2023 10:01

@CityKity delighted to hear that!! Cannot believe you got good sleep with a 6 day old!!@this is thing of fairy tales you know!!! @DomesticElf hope baby has settled. @sprollie11 baby's brain does its final maturing in days before labour so that should spur you on to be patient also the due date is just the central date between the range/spectrum of dates upon which baby might be born. Some babies are ready at 38 wks and some need 41 weeks and othrrs 42 weeks; setting a 'due date' brings more pressure and expectation so just try ignore it and do things you love when there's no screaming baby demanding your every waking minute's attention!!

LS888 · 07/08/2023 10:44

@sprollie11 I’m feeling the same at 4 days over. No advice other than take each day as it comes and try to get some rest, go for short walks and do things you love. Keep that oxytocin flowing! I don’t have many plans this week but am trying to keep busy!

I have also tried to think of it as a due period. So from 37-42 weeks the baby will be here. Not sure if that helps you or not. But thinking of you too x

Rowanandremy · 07/08/2023 10:49

@CityKity congratulations! So glad that you are recovering well and that the worries you had before baby was born aren’t bothering you anymore. How amazing to have a wonderful nights sleep 6 days in! That’s a fab sign, long may it continue!

@BMK Congratulations! You were certainly put through it, did you get through all of that just using gas and air? Hope all is well with your baby and that there’s no sign of infection and that you are also feeling alright in yourself

sommeliermama · 07/08/2023 11:37

@CityKity many congrats! Hope you are enjoying the first week and glad everything went well for you and baby boy 💙

@BMK you did so well to get through all of that on just gas and air! Goals 😍huge congratulations also

BCxx · 07/08/2023 14:49

Congratulations @BMK ! You are made of tough stuff! Hope baby is getting better and you’re able to get home as soon as you can to rest

BCxx · 07/08/2023 14:55

If I’m planning not to directly breastfeed but to give my colostrum syringes and possibly top up with formula if needed or hand express when I’m in there, how many syringes do you think I should take? Online it seems to say around 5ml per feed and I’m assuming baby may feed less frequently than a directly breastfed baby as I will be giving them the whole lot much quicker than they’d maybe have got it out themself. If I aimed for a 5-7ml feed every 3 hours? That would be 8 feeds in 24 hours so a minimum of 40ml? 🤔 just 37 syringes to go 😂😳

After my success two nights ago it was like getting blood out a stone last night but I’ve decided although it seems like you’re warmer in the bath, it actually works better for me after a shower with a warm dressing gown on. Will see how today’s goes!

sprollie11 · 07/08/2023 15:04

Thank you @BMK and @LS888! Yes good reminders that the due date doesn't really mean anything, and to make the most of the time, doing nice things! I think I'm also just apprehensive about labour as baby already measuring above 90th centile and I know the longer he stays in there then the bigger he is going to be Blush

Paintandpots · 07/08/2023 15:42

Congratulations @CityKity !! I imagine you must be on a new baby high!!

HRSC · 07/08/2023 16:18

Congratulations @BMK !! Sorry to hear it was difficult but hope you are doing ok now and enjoying your little baby 🥰

I’ve had some cramping the last couple of days but nothing ‘real’ yet. Everyone keeps telling me that the baby will be early, and although I know they are only basing it on the size of my bump (baby seems to be taking after her 6ft5 father not her 5ft3 mother!!😅) its making me get my hopes up - have to keep giving myself a reality check!!

The temperature has really ramped up here in the last couple of days. 40°C is proving to be quite tough to handle 🥵 hoping it starts to cool down soon. In the meantime it’s fans and ice packs and many ice creams !

BMK · 07/08/2023 16:31

@sprollie11 babies' heads are all approximately the same size re the bit that affects giving birth and once you deliver the head literally the rest just pops out as is smaller. Don't be worrying about size .I remember being the exact same and I spent ages looking into this and discovered this. A lot of the weight is in the length (longer legs or bodies)or some have bones that are heavier, but once head appears there is nonissue with size or length of body as it literally just flies out following the head.

MinnieFirstTimeMum · 07/08/2023 16:51

Congratulations @BMK 🥰

@BCxx I have been wondering how many syringes to take with me too.

I am thinking just 10 because I really don't want to waste any and I have the pre-made sterilised bottles with me too.

So I am thinking two feeds with the colostrum post c-section then use the formula and then DH can bring in some more the following morning when he comes.

I really don't want to waste any given how much effort collecting them has been. Hoping after Thursday I can ramp up the harvesting for a week though once I am on maternity leave x

BCxx · 07/08/2023 17:47

@MinnieFirstTimeMum 10 was my magic number last time and I didn’t even manage 1 full one so I’d probably be delighted with getting 10. My midwife said that they have very little space to store it so I should bring small amounts and get my husband to bring more in at night.

Going to keep going with once a day until Thursday then maybe up it to two times. A video I watched today said some people can collect 5 syringes in one go and end up with over 100 🤯

BMK · 07/08/2023 18:19

@Rowanandremy @sommeliermama @HRSC @BCxx @MinnieFirstTimeMum thank you!!!@Rowanandremy it seems like ages since your delivery !!How are things going? @BCxx and @MinnieFirstTimeMum I too as of 2 hours ago am also expressing colostrum!! The midwife helped me and I got 1ml,but likely as baby started it coming by feeding before the NICU this a.m.

BCxx · 07/08/2023 18:38

@BMK oh yeah, forgetting you would need to do that. Is baby able to feed if you go down there or does it just need to be the syringes? The video I watched today really emphasised how much easier adding heat makes it and you get way more out. I’m not sure how this is really possible in hospital though other than straight after a shower. I have small flannels for the baby in my bag so could maybe just make do with one of them under the hot tap placed on them for a bit

SaraNaomi · 07/08/2023 19:32

Hello! Apologies to jump into your thread. I was wondering if anyone else is in the same position as me - I was supposed to be having a scheduled C section next week at 39+2 or +4, however, I have just been told that because of the planned strike action my date has been moved back until 40+4 ... Please note that I support the strike action and understand why it is being undertaken. I'm just quite worried now that I will go into labour before my given date and I will end up having an emergency caesarian or worse, they will not be able to perform it due to understaffing... My baby is laying transverse and I was told this means an increased risk of cord prolapse which is incredibly dangerous for the baby. It doesn't seem there's anything I can actually do about this though ... Is anyone else in the same boat ?

sprollie11 · 07/08/2023 20:37

Thank you @BMK - you don't know how reassuring that was to read!!!

BCxx · 07/08/2023 22:10

@SaraNaomi oh no, what a worry for you! Is this your first? The strike isn’t affecting mine (as far as I know😬). It could end up getting called off and you’ll maybe get rebooked in 🤞🏻 how did they inform you about this? What did they say would happen if you went into labour? I assume they’re still doing emergencies so would hopefully get you in asap

overwork · 07/08/2023 22:40

Hi @SaraNaomi - they should prioritise staffing emergency areas, so there should be enough people there to do an emergency c-section. They'll have cancelled the planned ones as they won't have enough staff in to perform elective surgeries. I would speak to your midwife to allay your fears, you don't need to be worrying about that on top of everything else!
Congratulations @BMK & @CityKity - BMK sounds like you had a rough old time of it. I hope that there aren't any lasting side effects for either of you and that it doesn't matter one bit now your baby is safely safely here with you.
@BCxx - I found getting colostrum a 'fun' activity while I was stuck in hospital after birth (though I gave up pretty quickly!) so maybe you don't need to get it all before you go? The midwives helped me to get started and gave me more syringes.

We have finally agreed on a name for our little boy, going to get him registered tomorrow. My parents seemed to really love it (though what else could they say really) but it was lovely telling them and having them fuss over him.

BCxx · 07/08/2023 22:49

@overwork I was thinking that too. I’ve now got 5 syringes from the last 3 days so enough for the first feed at least. I hadn’t really mastered it before birth last time so didn’t get on an awful lot better after he arrived but I did get a little bit so hopefully I can do that on day 1 so it’s maybe even enough to cover day 2 🤞🏻

BCxx · 07/08/2023 22:49

How exciting about choosing a name too @overwork.. how many days did it take you? We have finally settled on a name and I’m so glad we have before baby arrives or I think I would really struggle to choose which one

overwork · 07/08/2023 23:15

We had absolutely nothing for a boy, we hadn't thought of this name until about a week or so after he arrived, so we gave ourselves a few days to try it out on him before we told people. I think it really suits him.
I've been really surprised by how much it's bothered other people, we have 6 weeks before we have to register him and we were quite happy taking our time, you'd think we'd said we weren't ever going to name him.

Mum was telling him a little story this evening about how they were going to take a kite and a football and go on days out together and it had me in tears - blinking hormones. So pleased that they get to have these experiences with him.
