Here is promised thread jessi! Congratulations too Ellasmum and jessi - Ellasmum, my due date will be about 20th July I think. Haven't seen any midwife or doctor yet - trying to remember what I did when last time!

I think the nuchal scan has to be done between 11 and 14 weeks, so if your dates are wrong then they may not be able to measure the fluid. How sure are you of your dates? I guess the doctor might give you a dating scan for this reason.

Sorry you're feeling sick too!

Hi Jessi thanks for asking - am feeling ok today - had a meeting where the man was almost in tears but I was gine -grrrrr!

jessi · 28/11/2002 16:34

Good for you OuiOui!
Hormones are doing ok today, but nausea during the day is coming and going, not being sick though thankfully. So so so tired..anyone else knackered?
KMS I would of thought that the fact you don't know your edd and need to book in for a nuchal must be grounds enough to give you a dating scan now? I would hassle, as like you say you wouldn't want to miss the slot for a nuchal. Good luck.

AimeesMum · 28/11/2002 16:58

Hi all. I've not posted here before, but I'll be nine weeks pregnant on Saturday, my edd being July 5. Dh and I have got a little girl who turned 2 last month, and we're looking fwd to having another baby. I miscarried in my first pregnancy at 8 and a half weeks, so I've been so nervous that it would happen again, even though I've had a healthy pregnancy since. Sickness comes and goes, which I'm glad of, as it started at 6 weeks, and I was dreading that I would be sick everyday like I was with my dd!
I've been really tired, and can't keep my eyes open in a morning...will be glad once I'm in to that second trimester! lol.
Thanks for listening to me going on...lol
Sam

Pamina, what is the AFP test? Sorry, never heard of it before. Thanks.

ellasmum · 28/11/2002 21:14

KMS - I asked at the hospital about when they could do a nuchal scan and they said it had to be between 11 weeks +5 and 13 weeks +5. I will only just make it as this period falls at Xmas for me so the clinic is closed!!!

AimeesMum - my due date is 6th July so we are literally at the same stage. I too am knackered - not helped by my 8 month old being full of energy.

ellasmum · 28/11/2002 21:16

Sorry - KMS, meant to add that you should really push for a dating scan - even if it means you end up having two scans really close together, at least you would have correct dates.

Melly · 28/11/2002 21:19

Jessi, AFP stands for Alpha feta protein. It is a blood test carried out to give an estimate of your risk of having a baby with Down's, and maybe some other abnormalities I'm not too sure. No doubt others will be able to give you a better explanation, but I think that is basically correct. The AFP is offered to mums over a certain age depending on where you live, and then you make a decision based on the result as to whether you want to proceed to an invasive investigation such as an amnio. I think most people opt for having an AFP and then make a decision, I think I am slightly unusal (or maybe not) in that dh and I decided in my last pregnancy when I was 36 and also this time round (now 38) not to bother with AFP and go straight for amnio. It is an incredibly personal thing and not easy whichever way you look at it. We decided that the estimate of the AFP wouldn't be reassuring enough so we went straight for amnio. There are so many pros and cons to weigh up with all of these tests and my hope is that in the not too distant future a test will be available that is as accurate as an amnio but non invasive. Personally having had two amnios I don't think I could go through it again, I was a nervous wreck both times.

Bears · 29/11/2002 21:48

Must be nice to have more than 1 scan. I don't suppose I'll have the 'standard' one done until Feb (all being well of course). I don't think I'll opt for the Downs Syndrome tests etc (Didn't last time anyway). Pregnancy definitely feels more real after a scan. I've got 1st appointment with MW on Dec 18th - much earlier than 1st time round.

Haven't been as tired as I thought I would so far, just a couple of early nights needed. Ds has been a little star - he sleeps so well at night (atm at least - I don't expect it to last).
I've been feeling a bit apprehensive lately about having 2 kids, but at the same time looking forward to this new challenge. That may sound weird I know.

OuiOui · 03/12/2002 10:28

hey anyone out there? I'm now 12 weeks - hoorah- and can't wait to have the scan to make it all seem more real - scan's not until next Friday and am already bored with the wait. Am feeling really restless today. Anyone feel the same?

bundle · 03/12/2002 12:02

Ouioui, I'm a bit further on than you, but remember that wait! I think the mix-up with my appointments made it seem a little quicker this time. in the end the sonographer didn't have anyone else waiting and I kept HER waiting because dh was late, and I didn't want him to miss it . How are you feeling otherwise? I've a regular midwife appt today will send your love to the whittington!

ellasmum · 03/12/2002 15:35

Hi...

Am beggining to feel a little better althugh still have days of feeling like complete sh*t. Have worked out that sweet things make me feel worse - so no turkish delight!! Hopefully this phase will not last long as I really fancy some chocolate.

Hope everyone else is well.

musica · 05/12/2002 09:07

Glad you're feeling a bit better Ellasmum - I still feel really rotten - the smell of toast made me nearly throw up at the weekend!

I'm finding it really hard to remember whether this is worse or better than last time - I remember moaning a lot then....!

Hi all- not been around for a bit as computer now moved out to office conversion of garage.(bit cold out here!) Have seen midwife for booking in. thought she might be able to push for earlier scan. The one I have booked is supposed to be a dating scan but they are so fully booked can't fit me in earlier! Have also booked nuchal for week after and continue to phone hospital every day to see if any cancellations (as if I had nothing better to do!) - still feel cr*p.Can't stand smell of coffee in the same room! was able to drink coffee with both boys!
Congrats to Aimeesmum.

OuiOui · 10/12/2002 11:44

wake up girls and give us all an update. Still being sick every few days and am waiitng for my scan this Friday - bit nervous about it but can't wait to see the "pulsating peanut" Hope everyone's ok and looking forward to Christmas!!!

ellasmum · 10/12/2002 14:42

Hi...

Update as required OuiOui!! Am still feeling nauseas - and can't seem to eat enough. Got booking in appointment and nuchal scan first week of January.

Looking forward to Xmas - DD's first so seems really exciting. Glad we are not going to Australia as not sure how I would cope with sickness + heat + bush fires!!

Hope everyone else is well.

OuiOui · 10/12/2002 14:53

thanks ellasmum - know what you mean about the bush fire but would love to go to sydney otherwise (our dream is to move there eventually).

so how many months between your dd and new little one? Ther'e going to be 20 months between mine (unplanned) which is a little less than I had hoped. First time round I breastfed on demand (24/7) for the first 6 motnhs and found just about enought time to have a cup of tea and a choocie biscuit for breakfast (and that was from 6 weeks. How on earth will I do it this time?

ellasmum · 12/12/2002 21:37

OuiOui - sorry I havn't been back on - things a bit hectic here.

The age gap will be less than 15 months - as with you, this is much less than planned. I didn't cope very well with DD and was just beginning to feel like life was back to normal when I became pregnant again. I am hoping that I am going to be a lot calmer this time round and not worry about sleep / routines etc...

Know what you mean about the food thing - fingers crossed it will be better this time.

KMS · 13/12/2002 00:02

Hi all-Not much to report. still sick still tired. Ouioui- it is amazing how breastfeeding no.2 is easier, they get used to the odd interuption, much better than first child. I used to read to no.1 while I feed no.2 as this made it special for both. Be prepared for no.1 to ask if they can have some. I said yes and he then changed his mind but I'm sure if I had said no we would have had a battle! although he was just 2yrs a little older than yours will be. All the best enjoy your 1st xmas.

musica · 13/12/2002 22:13

I have had an awful day - I woke up this morning, and was ever so slightly bleeding - hardly at all, but enough to make me concerned, so I phoned the doctor, and she said come in straight away. So I bundled ds into the car, went to doctors, she referred me on to the early pregnancy clinic, so I drove up there (dh wasn't answering the phone), had a horrible stressful time trying to park the car, knowing the clinic would shut in half an hour, finally got in there, and they gave me a scan. Luckily everything is (so far) ok, and I got to see the little wee thing, and its heart beat. But I feel really low, and am wondering if this is a precursor of a miscarriage, or if it is just unexplained bleeding. They couldn't find any reason, and it has stopped, so it was ever so light.

Hope you've all had better days!

bossykate · 13/12/2002 22:20

musica, sorry you have had a rough day. fwiw, i had early pregnancy bleeding, had the scan, saw the heartbeat, gave birth to a nine and half pounder at 41 wks. can't remember the source now, but i do remember reading at the time that once the heartbeat has been observed there is only a 3% chance of miscarriage from that point on.

good luck!

KMS · 14/12/2002 21:41

Musica- sorry to hear about your bad day. hope all is still well. I had a slight bleed at 13wks with ds1, and all was fine. just put your feet up & try not to stress, it can just be your body telling you to slow down a little! have a good weekend.

Jodiesmum · 17/12/2002 08:13

Musica, if it's any help, I had bleeding at 7/8 weeks, had an OK scan, and then continued to bleed every day until 11 weeks or just over I think. I found it really really demoralising and was convinced something terrible was going to happen but one day it just stopped. Am now nearly 16 wks and doing fine (touch wood) though dreaded amnio coming up on 2 Jan so miscarriage fears are looming again for a different reason. Apparently bleeding during that 7-11 wk period is common (something to do with the placenta forming??) and it's definitely true about finding a heart beat - risk of miscarriage reduces to 3%. Lots of luck to you.

musica · 17/12/2002 09:27

Thanks for your support everyone - everything seems to be fine now - I'm guessing it was just linked to the monthly cycle anyway. VERY encouraged about heartbeat - thanks!!!
