Is anyone else really nervous about telling their work? I'm the manager of a small charity and I've only been there since the end of Aug, I'm worried that the board of trustees are going to be so peed off with me... the charity's going through a tricky period and I feel like they're going to think that this is the last thing they'll need. Im thinking of telling them soon after my 12 week scan (Mon) to give them as much notice as possible, to soften the blow.

Can anyone relate, or does anyone have any words of wisdom? Thank you x

Ah that sounds like it's hard, but to be honest they can't have a go at you or even feel resentment towards you because that's like hating you for wanting to have a family. Ultimately, they might not be over the moon with having to find cover for you etc, but that's not the same as being peed off with you for having a baby. I think any workplace is entitled to be a little stressed at employee changes, but ultimately its part of running a business and I bet they'll be thrilled to hear you news, no matter how they feel about covering you 💛 I think telling them as soon as you feel comfortable is sensible and fair.

I told my work this week....but am in a very odd situation. I've only worked at the company part time for a few months. But my husband and I are taking over. The takeover is getting very very complex and stressful and it's been really hard work. I knew I wasn't going to be able to manage this year alone and wasn't ready to fully take up the role. So I spoke to the current owners and they have agreed to cover my mat leave so that I can actually take some time off, without worrying about paying people and keeping the business going. Once I'd told them, I was genuinely moved by the support I'd got (baring in mind these people are nearly finally free of their company and I've asked them to help for another year!). So you never know, you might be surprised by work too! I think you'll feel better once you've told them. It was a massive weight lifted for me!

sprollie11 · 20/01/2023 19:03

Thanks @Createcomet thats so reassuring to hear your workplace have been supportive! I do just need to bite the bullet, put myself in their shoes, hope they're not too miffed, and work hard for the next few months to leave things in the best place possible x

@sprollie11 i haven’t told work yet and because it’s my second I almost think it’s as if ‘oh you’re off for another long break are you?’ 🙈 People are literally only on the planet because women choose to make this sacrifice for their life, body, career etc so everyone at your work should remember they wouldn’t be alive if their mum hadn’t made the same sacrifice for them 🤣

Thanks @BCxx this is such a useful reminder! It's so easy to forget the importance and benefits of the role of being a mother, instead focusing on how it might be letting others down or inconveniencing them 🙄 best of luck telling your work too x

sally16 · 20/01/2023 20:12

@sprollie11 it was awkward telling my boss today.. because that will be 6 of us on mat leave together 🤣 but she was very happy for me! And said she will get the figures together for me in next couple of weeks to build up mat leave etc!

Narwhal88 · 20/01/2023 20:35

@sprollie11 I'm getting a new manager in a few weeks once she returns from mat leave 🤣 so she can hardly complain!
It's going to cause me extra work though as I'm a senior manager so I will have to plan my cover for mat leave in advance.

BCxx · 20/01/2023 21:18

@sally16 no way 🤣 must be something in the water or whatever the saying is

UsernameNotPresent · 20/01/2023 21:19

@sprollie11 I was dreading telling my work, as I am in a slightly convoluted situation and mat leave would come at an awkward time for them. I ended up telling them around 9 weeks, to give them plenty of notice, and I was pleasantly surprised by the support.

sally16 · 20/01/2023 21:48

@BCxx we only have one man on our base team.. not even a male consultant or physio etc 😂😂
Was always gonna happen 😆

sally16 · 20/01/2023 22:04

I posted on the fb group but is anyone that's only here maybe able to help too?
I had severe spd last pregnancy.. I'm absolutely crippled today, I struggled half my shift with my hip locking and lower back pain..
can you get spd this early? I was too embarrassed to ask the physios but now I wish I did 😭 my left leg and hip are absolute agony!

P1pk · 20/01/2023 23:27

@Narwhal88 @Firsttimemomma1 thank you for the tips, I might give it a go on Sunday.
@sprollie11 I'm also dreading telling work, it will be the most awkward timing as I can see some projects coming together in the summer. I'm 10wks tomorrow so I'm not comfortable telling them just yet, I will wait a few weeks still. Good luck for when you do tell your work!!

Loudmouth1 · 20/01/2023 23:34

I told my boss a few week ago as I work in a fast paced busy pub in the lake district and come summer time I'm more of a liability to them than a help my boss was soo kind and caring they've offered me to take my holidays from the first week in June start my mat leave on my due date then have put me down for a year off in case I decide to use my other holiday pay to have the full year with baby! My boss is still waiting for grandkids so she's very invested in my pregnancy but not in an annoying way!

Hoping23 · 21/01/2023 00:58

@unluckyinlife yay, due date buddies!!!

Gizzyanne · 21/01/2023 09:03

Morning Everyone!
hope you’re all doing well :)!
11 weeks today 1st scan on the 30th nervous and excited! Anyone feel like someone has removed their batteries and are completely exhausted this week 😴! Also becoming so hard to not tell people when I have a fairly obvious bump already 🙈! Xx

ChloeN · 21/01/2023 09:09

Really random but does anyone else have super dry skin? It might just be the cold but my hands are sooo dry and cracked 🤦🏻‍♀️ I don’t even leave the house most days either 🤣

Createcomet · 21/01/2023 09:16

@Gizzyanne I'm 10.5 weeks ish and I'm feeling very very tired! Hopefully it will improve for us soon!

I'm also ashamed to admit that I'm really struggling with my son for the first time ever. He's 2, and I'm just so depleted from the constant whinging and making demands that I'm not really enjoying spending time with him right now 😭 yesterday he refused to nap and spent all afternoon over tired and generally very emotional. Then this morning my husband got up with him so I could sleep, but my son spent all morning crying and whining....So in the extra hour and a half I got in bed, I got about 20 mins extra sleep. I'm just so so so tired 😭

Amme18 · 21/01/2023 09:29

@ChloeN my face feels SO dry! Can’t moisturise enough, could be the weather/heating though!

@Createcomet My patience with my 3 year old is so low, I feel awful. But I don’t have the energy to deal with myself let alone his whining 😅

Amme18 · 21/01/2023 09:31

@Gizzyanne im 12+3 and my bump is massive but womb is only just out the pelvis so I know half of that is gas/constipation 😅 I’ve not put weight on either so it’s not that! But feel embarrassed it’s so big so early!

Gizzyanne · 21/01/2023 09:57

@Createcomet oh that’s sounds so difficult 😞! I’ve promised my 7yo nephew a sleepover this evening and I’m regretting it already but can’t break a promise!
it’s completely understandable that you’re feeling the way you are, it’s no fun being exhausted and battling with a very tired 2yo too! He knows you love him though don’t beat yourself up!
@Amme18 i keep telling myself I’m just bloated but it seems to be getting bigger 😂! Just can’t wait for the secret to be out now!

I feel exactly the same. Had a rough night with my nearly two year old too. I’m so tired 😭

sally16 · 21/01/2023 10:42

@Amme18 remember the more your womb moves up the more your organs have to shift up too so it is technically a bump just the baby's still lower than it looks 😆

Recoba · 21/01/2023 10:49

@Amme18 @Createcomet @BananaBread3 and all the others struggling with toddlers - the leader of one of our toddler groups said that being pregnant with a toddler was the hardest 9 months of her life, and once the baby came it was so much easier, which felt very validating. Hang in there.

Oh gosh I hope this is true!!!! Sometimes I find myself thinking "how the hell will I cope with 2 kids?!" but then, I won't be pregnant I guess. This first trimester is just so crap for so many reasons. But the constant fatigue, nausea and generally feeling unwell is realllllllly draining isn't it?
