My pennyโ€™s worth on pain relief is go in with an open mind! You donโ€™t know how youโ€™ll deal with the pain at the time so if you feel you need an epidural then go for it, if you think you can get on with just gas and air then do it!

My first labour was pretty quick so I went to about 9cm with absolutely nothing then had gas & air at the end. Everyone thinks I was hardcore but actually I wanted all the pain relief I just wasnโ€™t allowed it by the time they admitted me!

SamanthaVimes · 14/05/2022 12:20

@KizboBaggins pethidene is an opiate based drug I think. Itโ€™s an injection. Some people donโ€™t get on with it but I thought it was great stuff, really helped. Trouble is you canโ€™t have it too close to baby coming out as it can make them a bit sleepy so itโ€™s got to have time to clear your system before theyโ€™re actually born.

The epidural was bloody fantastic at the time as I was desperate for stronger pain relief. I actually managed to get some sleep , literally couldnโ€™t feel a thing. My only reservation about having one again is it forces you onto your back which makes pushing harder and I think that contributed to the episiotomy I needed and some mild bladder issues. So Iโ€™m keen to have gravity to assist this time if possible!

That being said Iโ€™m not saying I definitely wonโ€™t have it again, just not my first choice. Depends how much this one hurts!

Confusion101 · 14/05/2022 12:56

Iโ€™m not saying I definitely wonโ€™t have it again, just not my first choice. Depends how much this one hurts!

My sentiments exactly. This is my first baby but this is exactly how I feel. Open to it but not my first choice. Time will tell

NamelessBaby1 · 14/05/2022 13:41

I find US based discussion very epidural focussed, but I'm slightly put off as my mum was left with a bad back after getting one with me - I know it's rare to get a side effect like that but I'd still rather try and go without it if possible (however who knows how I'll feel at the time!)

I've asked my midwife if I'd be able to try using a pool in the hospital - was also after watching that programme that made me want to try it, lol. Definitely don't want a home birth though, my husband would just get stressed and that would stress me out haha. I'd love if I have a midwife led unit nearby to make use of, but I'm only 5 mins from the hospital here so makes sense just to go there!

ChinChilly · 15/05/2022 08:20

Is anybody else struggling with sleep? I spend all night trying to get comfortable tossing and turning.. and the leg cramps WTF I've never had cramp before all i can say is ouch

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 15/05/2022 08:36

Me @ChinChilly

If Iโ€™m not getting up for the 10th time for the loo, Iโ€™m changing positions because clearly the bump doesnโ€™t like the one Iโ€™m currently in (!), or Iโ€™m
too hot, or too cold, or, or, orโ€ฆ.

Then finally pass out in an exhausted heap about 6am when my alarm goes off an hour later. Itโ€™s getting ridiculous!

ChinChilly · 15/05/2022 08:48

@HotToddyColdSauvignon Yup, I'm the exaxt same.. I'm exhausted. I was expecting for sleep to start getting difficult but not yet I thought I had a few weeks of decent sleep left ๐Ÿ˜ซ

NamelessBaby1 · 15/05/2022 09:08

Yep same with the sleep, been tossing and turning night, just can't get comfy and when I do it takes ages to get back over to sleep again!

Coco9910 · 15/05/2022 09:42

Same with the sleep! I wake up every day at like 6-6:30am and this morning I was like โ€œIโ€™m not doing this Iโ€™m so tired!โ€ so went to the sofa and had a little snooze and woke up properly at 8:30 so feel refreshed today! Iโ€™ve been having hip pains from sleeping on my side which isnโ€™t fun!

ShellUK09 · 15/05/2022 09:59

Yeah same with the sleep although been like this for most of the pregnancy with late night pees, forgotten what a full night's sleep is like! I get those occasional severe leg cramps, had one this morning and the pain is unreal. My lower calf goes into a spasm usually when I stretch as I just wake up. I've read it can be caused by low potassium levels so I keep trying to eat bananas! I got a mamas and papas pregnancy pillow from Amazon and that has helped me get more comfortable and sleep a bit better, it was ยฃ39 which is quite reasonable as most seem to cost a fortune!

ChinChilly · 15/05/2022 10:27

Ahh glad it's not just me but sorry we're all getting naff sleep.

@Coco9910 I've been getting the hip pains the left side of my hip.is in agony today. OH has been away for a few days though so I've been doing both dog walks at about 20,000 steps a day so that probs hasn't helped.

@ShellUK09 oh god I've been getting thos3 legs spasms.. awful aren't they. Good to know about the potassium although I absolutely hate bananas ๐Ÿคฃ

SamanthaVimes · 15/05/2022 13:01

Iโ€™m in the same boat with crap sleep and sore hips from side sleeping, my bump feels massive and so heavy! My pillow definitely helps but doesnโ€™t fix it completely.

Really looking forward to being able to sleep on my back again once babyโ€™s here!

Lianna93 · 15/05/2022 13:14

I'm okay with falling asleep but gotta have the pillow under my bump & between my legs otherwise I'm not comfy but I've now been getting loads of upper back pain - baby sits so high up now.
But I'm waking up about half 5 every morning now & I'm the same with the cramp, everytime I stretch I cramp my calves or feet ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I am another sneaky interloper - tbh by my dates I think I'm due 3-5th July but scans have consistently said 27th June and I'm measuring big, so who knows. My last baby was 41+3 and also a giant, I would love a July baby so I'm hoping to go over a bit! Mainly because I still have everything to sort so would like to get that done then relax a little. I've brought my mat leave forward now so just 2 weeks to go then we go on holiday for a week (midwives were a little bit on edge when I said that but we are only going 1.5 hours from home!) then can properly prepare and relax, is my plan.

Plan is still another home birth! My first was 4 weeks early but I think that's unusual!

Anyone else with older children, how is it going? My 3.5 year old is starting to play up a bit, and although he's really excited about the baby I think subconsciously it's starting to get to him a bit. I am also feeling a bit worried about how my 1 year old will take it (I suspect not well!!). I genuinely don't mind what it is (having a surprise) but as I have two boys already I did wonder if a girl would be nice just because then for my middly he won't feel as 'replaced' but that's probably a silly thought anyway! in general wondering what I was thinking about having 3, but overall I just can't wait to meet this kicking, squirming, busy little baby in my tummy :) <3

kiwi17 · 15/05/2022 14:53

@Effram I'm in a similar position to you- 2 weeks of work left then going to south of France for a week which I'm hoping will be ok ๐Ÿ˜ฌ (it's a whole family holiday that's been postponed for 2 years so felt I couldn't not go! )

In terms of older siblings, I have a 4 and a half year old who is very excited about the baby at the moment but we'll see if that changes ๐Ÿ˜‚

I had the dreaded Glucose Test on Friday and it really wasn't bad at all! Not sure if I was just expecting much MUCH worse, or my hospital's drink wasn't bad, but it was totally totally fine! I've had smoothies sweeter than the drink they gave me LOL. The waiting around was a bit boring, but I brought a book so even that bit wasn't bad. Overall, totally fine experience for me. If anyone else has it coming up - do not stress yourself out, it is totally uneventful.

Capricorn8990 · 15/05/2022 18:18

Heya ladies, Iโ€™ve been MIA as my app hasnโ€™t been letting me post anything so using the internet version.

I am now 32 + 2 and since 24 weeks Iโ€™ve had 5 episodes of reduced movement and 1 episode of unexplained pain. Due to this Iโ€™m now going in for 2 weekly CTGs and growth scans. Im going to be under a consultant and my need an induction but Iโ€™ll speak to the consultant about it during my appointment on Tuesday.

Need to catch up with everyoneโ€™s comments!

also adding my due date!

Hi everyone, adding myself into the calendar ๐Ÿ˜ looks like we're due date buddies @CaptainCarp!

I had a failed epidural with my DD1 - it only worked on one side so needed redoing, but even after that I still had bad pain and knew exactly when to push, much to many people's surprise / disbelief. Apparently that's uncommon though. As a result though I just want to go straight to the labour ward this time, instead of the MLU. It'd be lovely to be as relaxed about the whole thing as I was the first time round! Ended up with a episiotomy from much the same situation as you @SamanthaVimes. Hoping for an easier ride this time though ๐Ÿคž

Mattieandmummy · 16/05/2022 01:57

@Confusion101 I only had gas and air in the last hour and a half with my first and quite a few people have made comments about being "hardcore" etc. I don't think I am, I asked for pain relief really early on and was told no! I just kind of got on with it and it was ok.

Looking back I think it was probably a good thing, as others have said you have to lie on your back with an epidural and that makes it harder to push and more likely to tear.

Ultimately it's your birth, if you don't want an epidural - don't have one! Unless of course you have to but that's a whole other thing x

Mattieandmummy · 16/05/2022 02:05

@Effram my 3 year is definitely getting a bit stressed about it all. These last two weeks she's been asking a lot about how long it is until July and is really excited about it all. But we're also seeing a lot more upsets and outbursts which is quite unlike her. Could also be a developmental thing I guess ๐Ÿคท

She was really sweet the other day though and asked me if I was going to be ok and if it would hurt enough to say ouch ๐Ÿ’” So it's obviously ticking away subconsciously.

SamanthaVimes · 16/05/2022 06:56

I donโ€™t think my DD really understands whatโ€™s coming. If I ask her whatโ€™s in mummyโ€™s tummy sheโ€™ll say a baby but I donโ€™t think she realises it will live with us when itโ€™s born ๐Ÿ˜…

Her second birthday is less than a week before my due date though so sheโ€™s only little. Iโ€™m praying the baby isnโ€™t early as I really donโ€™t want to miss her birthday!

KellyMac17 · 16/05/2022 07:10

Hi ladies another lurker here ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Iโ€™ve also experienced the dreaded leg cramps - canโ€™t be sure if itโ€™s coincidence or not but I got magnesium spray the day after as I REALLY donโ€™t want to have them again and so far they havenโ€™t come back. Spray and massage before bed (calves for me) and itโ€™s meant to help!

I've been sleeping like the dead lately and waking up feeling very groggy and disoriented, not refreshed. It's weird because we just moved house, and I don't normally sleep well in new places at first, but I think I'm just totally exhausted. ๐Ÿ˜ I get leg cramps occasionally but not too bad yet. I stretch them out and that usually kills them quickly.

Also had some worries over reduced movements. It drives me mad but my girl doesn't seem to have a consistent pattern. She seems to be quiet when I'm active (and I've been super busy recently), and then more lively at night, but that's not guaranteed. She tends to react when my partner blows squeaky raspberries on my bump! I think also she might be quieter during growth spurts, but I'm not sure. It's a nightmare trying to work out whether to call. I'm always on the verge of getting it checked and then she starts making moves again.

SamanthaVimes · 16/05/2022 13:56

@deliwoman1 I got told that is moving about being active sort of lulls them to sleep (a bit like newborns like being rocked) and they โ€œwake upโ€ when we stop moving.

If Iโ€™m ever worried I lie down and eat/drink something cold which normally gets a fairly quick reaction. If not itโ€™s time to call in!
