first post on Mumsnet. sorta unexpectedly but not unhappily pregnant for the first time. due on 21st August- there aren't many other women in my life who are having babies so looking for some community here :)

ToCaden · 21/02/2022 12:35

@theotherfossilsister hoping you get answers quickly.

My childhood friend has downs. He's been happily married to a wonderfully witty woman (who also has downs) for years and has a job he enjoys. He was independent of his parents years sooner than I was.

In fact the biggest issues some of his friends have had is their parents expecting them to be dependent on them forever and resisting letting go when their kids were ready to fly the nest.

Downs doesn't mean the same thing it did even a few decades ago and there's quite a bit of support. It would require a change in mindset though from what you were expecting if it does turn out to be the case.

Hoping you get some answers soon and don't need to wait in the unknown for long.

ToCaden · 21/02/2022 12:38

@candywarhol welcome to the group. Smile

My bump seems to have popped out overnight.....suddenly nothing is fitting! 16 weeks, I didn't expect that this early on. Was hoping to hide things until after 20 week scan but might have to rethink...anyone else's bump out now?

Unsure1010 · 21/02/2022 13:19

@theotherfossilsister I think a sense of pain and grief is expected. You’re allowed to grieve your previous expectations. As @ToCaden says, if it does come down to a baby living with Downs, the support and research and knowledge has come on leaps and bounds. A friend of mine has Downs and loves a full and varied life. In fact, I regard her as the adult in my life sometimes!!!

Take your time to process and accept the news, no matter what your overall decisions may be. Sanding love and hugs today though, while

Unknown6 · 21/02/2022 13:34

@theotherfossilsister, I had a cvs about 3 weeks ago as my bloods came back with a high chance, I got a call 3 working days later to say all was OK (they are slower sending physical results I guess because they told me on phone)
Between 12 week scan & cvs/ results it was about 2 weeks. I know how scary this time for you is. Try to keep positive as its more likely everything is ok. Sending hugs x

miltonj · 21/02/2022 14:17

Welcome @candywarhol ! How are you feeling?

Glago2017 · 21/02/2022 15:24

@theotherfossilsister hope you get answers soon.

For anyone who has had Covid since they have been pregnant, did you contact your GP/midwife to let them know? I tested positive this morning and feel alright at the moment. However on the email it said if you are pregnant to contact them. I don't have any appointments in the next week. X

Tiredmum31111 · 21/02/2022 15:41

@theotherfossilsister sorry your going through a stressful time. I had the same 1:5 for DS (and high risk for all the others) for my previous little girl a few years ago. Was a horrible moment getting that phone call, the floor seems to fall from beneath you.
I had a CVS as at the time NIPT wasn't around on the NHS and even with those odds all was fine (I had a placenta issue but my Papp A was crazy low 0.1 so that was the marker for me and other than small still all was okay).
It's very very hard not to focus on being the 1 in 40 I know but cross my fingers all okay for you.

I had my dating scan on Friday which has moved my due date a little to Aug 27th.
Hopefully all okay. I had the NIPT privately (because of previous stress) at 10 weeks so know I'm low risk but still had the combined test done so I now what my Papp A is. So I'm still anxious regarding a phone call.

Covid wise I did txt my midwife just to say I've got covid but I'm fine and that was it really.

Hope everyone is doing okay xx

Hiya, yes, I rang the hospital emergency number. Even though that is for past 20 weeks as my midwife told me they are monitoring and risk assessing everyone. They also called me a few times during isolation to make sure all was okay still.
I had to monitor oxygen levels and temperature levels throughout . Hope you dont suffer too much, I felt like I had the flu for four days but other than that fine.

cunningplan101 · 21/02/2022 16:32

Hello - can I join the group? I'm due August 28th.

I've been holding off posting here as in my last pregnancy I found out I had miscarried (MMC) at a scan at 10.5 weeks back in August last year. That baby would have been due next week if they had lived.

But with this pregnancy, we've now been through our NIPT, 12 week NHS scan and private nuchal scan and all is well so far.

I'm a FTM and 40 years old. I haven't told any family yet - going to tell my Mum next week when I see her in person, and my DH's parents a week later as we're going on holiday abroad to visit them.

We have a sealed envelope which will tell us the gender from our NIPT test - but we haven't opened it yet!

Thinking of those of you on this thread who are having a difficult and stressful time at the moment. I hope you get positive news soon.

Shelly1812 · 21/02/2022 17:44

Hi, dipping my toe in the water, I've been reading this thread from before Xmas but too afraid to post (miscarriage at start of November and fell pregnant without a period in between). 13 + 4 today due date 25th Aug. Old mum here too @ 39 with 2nd baby x

cunningplan101 · 21/02/2022 17:55

Thank you @ToCaden

@Cakecakecheese and @Shelley1812 It's great to have others to chat to in a similar situation (anxious and old indeed Grin)

beckybloomwood11 · 21/02/2022 19:09

Adding my name to this as we had our proper 12 week dating scan today (was told at the first attempt that I was only 11+1 so too early for the tests). Confirmed 13 weeks today and a due date of 29th August!

Hi Shelly, Congratulations!! We are due date twins - woop!
theotherfossilsister · 21/02/2022 19:16

Thank you for all the lovely supportive messages. They mean a lot. The midwife who took the NIPT was lovely. It should be back on Monday 28th.

Welcome to new people and really sorry for all folk who have also gone through trauma.

I had another scan and saw babies little hand. It looks perfect

Isonthecase · 21/02/2022 20:29

@theotherfossilsister I hope all goes well and results come quickly. It's horrible when the results are higher than you expect.

@theotherfossilsister keeping everything crossed for you and hope you can keep calm/distracted over the rest of the week. Flowers

BunnieMilk · 21/02/2022 21:41

Embarrassing day for me today! Booked a private scan- thought it would be nice to take along my mum and sister to see the twins on a ultrasound. Getting to the end of the scan and a wave of sickness came over me.. I thought oh no please NOT NOW! Sat up and puked all over myself, the bed and onto the floor. I was so embarrassed and kept apologising . The sonographer was lovely about it, thank god. As I was leaving a couple was waiting to be seen next in the waiting room with a look of pure horror on their faces! 😬 I'm due back to the same place for my gender scan at 16 weeks: id like to say I hope she won't remember me, but I have a feeling she'll never forget 😂
