Hi everyone,

Im currently pregnant 10wk today. I was losing weight before I found out I was pregnant and it was a surprise BFP as drs were convinced I had PCOS.

Really anxious as my BMI is still over 50! So wanted to start this thread to see if theres anyone else in a similar situation? Lets ride the waves together ladies Grin

Hi!
I'm 14+3 and my booking BMI was 41.5. I'd tried to lose weight before getting pregnant but seemed to gain instead (I'm awful at dieting...) In my last pregnancy my BMI was about 37 so feeling a little more nervous this time round, especially with covid too!

SnooperTrooper12345 · 06/03/2021 13:52

Hi, yes. My bmi have been over 50 for all of my pregnancies

oopsydaisyyy · 06/03/2021 14:00

I have a boy aged 8 and a little girl just turned 3 last month.
Another girl on the way.

In reply to your 12 week scan question, I carry all my weight in the front and in all my scans, they've just asked me to hold my stomach up so they can do the scan under. Never had any problems and photos have always been clear. As much as they like to tell you it won't be the case!

kerbearr · 06/03/2021 14:12

Hi I'm 20 weeks pregnant with twins BMI is 42! Everything's going well so far I've just had to take extra folic acid and aspirin as risk is higher for pre eclampsia have put a pound on so far which I'm deleted about I plan when the babies are here to try lose weight so I'm ready and fit for their toddler ages 🤭

Moominmiss · 06/03/2021 14:49

Hi, I’m 10+6 and bmi of 31/32. Not super super high but still high enough to class me as obese.

I’d started taking a higher dose (5mg) of folic acid while we were still ttc.

I also started myself on 150mg aspirin from ovulation and still taking them now.

My blood pressure has been on the higher side of normal (with some readings actually classed as high), so midwife is happy for me to remain on it.

I will be consultant led (mainly due to my previous c sections), but I’ve been told I’ll be have a glucose tolerance test at 28 weeks.

I have a nipt test booked for next week and am slightly concerned that they won’t get a result from the test because of my bmi.

I’d also been trying to lose weight before pregnancy. I actually managed to lose 6lb since finding out, but its since crept up by 2lb and now just sits static at that weight.

oopsydaisyyy · 06/03/2021 15:10

welcome onboard lovely ladies and congratulations 🥳

@SnooperTrooper12345 thats great news! I can wait for a sex scan and am glad that you've had no problems with scans as this was really stressing me out!

@kerbearr congrats on your twins!! I had a call from my midwife yesterday who has advised that I also start a higher dose of folic acid and asprin.

welcome @Moominmiss
when you say nipt test would this be the scan or the blood test? Im waiting for my appointment to come through too for the scan x

@oopsydaisyyy my 12 week scan seemed to be fine, they struggled with measurements at first but they said this was due to baby being very wriggly and my bladder being overful. I know last time on my scan notes there were always comments about my size but this time they are using an app so I don't see any of that.

Moominmiss · 06/03/2021 15:59

@oopsydaisyyy so it’s not the 12 week scan that the nhs does with the blood test and combined screening.

It’s the private harmony test. they do a scan too, but then another blood test which is more accurate than the nhs screening one. It extracts fetal dna from the mother’s blood stream to test more accurately for the trisomys.

My actually nhs ‘12 week’ scan is actually booked for nearer 14 weeks!

pixiedust21 · 06/03/2021 16:37

Hi ladies, 8+4 here with a BMI of 37 :( though I swear half of my weight is in my bloody boobs!!

Fell pregnant in the first month so all that "getting healthy and losing weight first" went out the window.

Since finding out I have actually lost 8 pounds due to being off food, not really snacking and walking quite a lot.

Got my booking in appointment with midwife next Friday.

Really hoping I can lose a bit more by eating well and exercising. I'm mostly worried people will be horrible about it at my appointments, there's nothing I can do now, and I know many larger women have perfectly healthy pregnancies but it's stressing me out a bit at the moment.

Just trying to stay as healthy as I can I suppose but glad others are in the same boat and doing well. Really reassuring to hear scans etc still go well as you hear all sorts about not being able to see baby etc.

CobleCloud · 06/03/2021 17:04

Hi Ladies- hope you don't mind me joining I have a high BMI too. I am 12+5 at the moment. My 12 week NHS scan was all fine got a very clear picture of baby. So do not worry, only thing that might happen is they press on a little harder to get the best view and measurements. Smile

tiredmum2468 · 06/03/2021 17:27

I'm not pregnant atm but did have a high BMI during both pregnancies

Slimming world is your friend here I lost 2st during each pregnancy (I was still about 15st)

It's not dangerous it's just healthy eating and it keeps things in check my midwife recommended it and I got the 1st 12 weeks free

All the meetings are online at the moment but I found it worked

My kids are now 5 and 2 and at my heaviest I was 18st and I'm now 14st2 - aiming to be 11 stone by next Christmas

pixiedust21 · 06/03/2021 18:04

@tiredmum2468 yes I follow slimming world at the moment and feel it's good to continue with while pregnant as it's just about filling up on fruit and veg and lots of good foods really!

Hi, i have a bmi of 40. This is my 2nd pregnancy.
I was under care of the dietician, who wanted me to try and keep my weight the same, she did advocate SW, which I didn’t do though did lose about 6lb all In all due to sickness.

I had a not great 12 week scan in my first pregnancy, couldn’t date me as couldn’t get accurate measurement or decent picture, I felt really bad at that point and she kept telling me it was because of my weight. But I gave myself a talking to and despite that I had a really healthy pregnancy. I booked in a private scan after the disappointment of the nhs 12 week one and they were able to get amazingly clear pictures and better measurements and were just nicer to me so that helped get over that little disappointment. Hoping I have a better 12 week scan this time.

lilymty · 06/03/2021 19:15

I'm currently 33 weeks & my bmi was over 51 at my booking in. My scans have been fine. I'm taking aspirin & consultant led but my pregnancy so far has been healthy with excellent blood pressure.

Mumtotwoandoneontheway · 06/03/2021 21:25

Hi ladies, I’ve current got a bmi of 39 😩 but have had positive experiences so far with the midwifes! But revived a letter in the post to say I have low PAPP A has anyone else had this. I’m currently 14 weeks 🙂

oopsydaisyyy · 06/03/2021 21:28

welcome aboard everyone, its lovely to share our thoughts, feelings and experiences. Also great to have others that you can relate to.

@KHR1 Yes i remember from my last pregnancy, even when my scans were very good and clear, the notes did include the terms "restricted due to high bmi"

@Moominmiss I didnt know about this test, is it also done around 12 weeks?

@pixiedust21
This is exactly why I thought about starting this thread. I also am worried about people being horrible although its probably our hormones. I felt as though people would judge me for getting pregnant at this weight! Horrible feeling and gets in the way of really enjoying the pregnancy.

Also did you get your slimming world free via your midwife?

@CobleCloud welcome and thanks for sharing, really hoping I get a clear pic too!

@tiredmum2468 I am
going to speak to my midwife about this, I want to lose some weight or at least try to keep my weight gain minimal!

@positivebex aww really hope you have a better scan this time. Although I think thats my back up plan to go private as mentally have convinced myself that my scan wont be good! I think the sonographer plays a huge part as some can be soo grumpy!
How far along are you?

@lilymty thats fantastic, so reassuring to hear! If you don't mind me asking how much weight have you gained so far. Feel free to not share if you don't want x

Thankyou! And you too 🥰 it basically means that the flow from baby to placenta isn’t great also ask risk of developing pre eclampsia and baby having a small birth rate 😩

kerbearr · 06/03/2021 22:08

I don't know about any of you ladies but I got a letter to say because of my BMI I would be getting the covid vaccine in the vulnerable groups, I was in with my GP yesterday while getting the whooping cough vaccine and said I didn't want it due to being pregnant and they've organised for me to get in July, I'm 29 so my age group probally won't be getting it untill then anyways. Just wondering if anyone else had been offered it due to their BMIs

PurpleFlower1983 · 06/03/2021 23:29

I’m 19 weeks pregnant and have been doing Slimming World since January. I’ve lost 11lbs so far which I’m really happy about. My BMI is 36, it was 32 with my first pregnancy and I had an excellent experience with the birth centre, I’m really keen for my weight not to limit my choices this time around.

SnooperTrooper12345 · 06/03/2021 23:52

I fully expected to be contacted about this as so many have said they have. Even with a slightly raised bmi. Mine had been over 40 for well over 8 years but haven't heard anything
