Hi everyone,

Im currently pregnant 10wk today. I was losing weight before I found out I was pregnant and it was a surprise BFP as drs were convinced I had PCOS.

Really anxious as my BMI is still over 50! So wanted to start this thread to see if theres anyone else in a similar situation? Lets ride the waves together ladies Grin

@oopsydaisyyy I was already a member of SW so have just continued membership so not sure about midwife offering free membership sorry!

It's my first pregnancy so I do want to still be able to enjoy it and not just feel crap about myself the whole way - we have to remember our bodies are awesome and yes, all sizes and shapes can give birth!

I just feel a bit annoyed because for myself I did want to be slimmer BUT just trying to remind myself I can only control what is happening now and that is being as healthy as I can while I'm pregnant to help things along.

I am so glad this thread exists - there have been some lovely threads in the past such as "plus size bumps" where ladies have posted pics of their beautiful baby bumps at different sizes and shapes so hopefully we could do something like that eventually.

Not that I can even imagine getting to that point, I'm still a bit in shock about the whole thing!! Grin

Hi ladies, I'd like to join you please. I'm another who was planning on conception taking a while and losing weight throughout but I got pregnant on the first cycle. I've managed to lose 12lb of Xmas weight but BMI is still 42.
I got a text on Friday inviting me to book my covid vaccine, I called the GP and explained I'm pregnant so what should I do, they said they won't give it to me now and I can book in after delivery.
I'm 11+1 today but I don't have my scan until 13+5, wish the time would go faster!

VNttc · 07/03/2021 08:38

Hello lovely ladies :)
14 weeks today and BMI on booking was 39 (have lost 0.9kg since booking).

Found this amazing website called Big Birthas www.bigbirthas.co.uk/
Which has some fab information on it about plus size pregnancy :) I also joined a plus size pregnancy Facebook group (although not had the courage to post anything yet!)

Had slightly raised blood pressure on booking appointment but they are just going to monitor for now - on aspirin and 5mg folic acid.

Moominmiss · 07/03/2021 08:48

@oopsydaisyyy the NIPT (harmony, panorama or SAFE) test can be done anytime from 10 weeks onwards.

I’d heard about it before anyway but at booking my midwife said it’s often recommended to older women (over 35 - I’m 38) because the nhs combined screening result is more likely to return a high risk result based on the maternal age alone. Couple that with a higher bmi and the risk goes up again.

So the NIPT is just more accurate as it looks purely at the fetal dna (along with a detailed diagnostic scan).

It’s still not a guarantee and you will still only be given a risk result. But for example one of my friends had a 1:78 result for downs from the nhs scan and screening, so she opted to have a NIPT as it’s non invasive, and this returned a result of 1:8000 meaning it’s far less likely that the baby has downs.

The risk result was likely down to her age (40) and her raised bmi of 39.

There’s lots of info online about the NIPT tests. I am just choosing to have one based on my age and BMI and the fact I had 4 miscarriages last year and I just want to (hopefully) get some reassurance.

@oopsydaisyyy
I actually haven't weighted myself during the pregnancy. I thought I would just let the midwife do it but they haven't since my 12 week scan. I have tried to not eat too much which was hard as I felt dizzy as soon as I felt alittle bit hungry. I have actually been told to eat more because of it.
I was worried about not having a baby bump as I already had a belly but I had people commenting on it from 28 weeks.

With my high bmi I have been waiting for my vaccine letter so I asked my consultant at my 32 week appointment what I should do when it comes he said he is recommending all his patients have it. He said its very much like other vaccines that are safe for pregnant women its just that this one hasn't been tested on us yet. He said there is no reason to suggest it would be harmful but its a personal choice.

KHR1 · 07/03/2021 09:24

@kerbearr I was about to ask if anyone had been invited for the vaccine! I haven't had a letter but thought I might have with my BMI being over 40. I know it's a potential risk but I think I'd like it if offered (going to speak to my consultant about it next week). I work in a school and my covid related anxiety is through the roof, I'm especially worried that I'll be hitting the third trimester in June when social distancing is supposed to going out the window.

Workalldayworkallnight · 07/03/2021 09:51

I’m 14 + 2 and my BMI is 36! I carry all my weight in my front too but I’ve had no troubles at all so far with midwifes and scans and things! My midwife is so lovely and hasn’t mentioned my weight at all and I’ve had 2 scans and both haven’t mentioned my weight at all either think they just press a bit harder but I had a lovely clear picture with my 12 week scan of my little one!

Sceptre86 · 07/03/2021 10:00

Hi all my bmi was 32 at my booking appointments so considered obese. I lost two stone last year but put it all back on during the course of lockdown. I started my exercise back up thinking it would take me a while to get pregnant as I am 34 but I fell pregnant straight away. I haven't exercised much at all during the first trimester but am using my exercise bike coupled with a 30 minute aerobics programme 4 times a week. I have ordered a treadmill and am looking forward to getting my 10000 steps in that way. I know from previous experience that I have more energy in the second trimester and a lot less in the third due to oedema. I am just trying my best and after the baby is born I would like to get close to my pre children weight. I am under no illusions though, my bmi before kids was 18.5 and I weigh almost double what I did then. The main thing for this pregnancy is to stay as fit as I can and enjoy it.

Sceptre86 · 07/03/2021 10:01

I am taking 5mg folic acid this time around due to bmi but no other adjustments so far.

Defo ask what they think, if I was working in an environment where i was exposed I might have been different and went for the vaccine, but I'm working from home and that's not likely to change before I go off on maternity, and I don't go anywhere at the moment so I would say touch wood I'm safe enough

positivebex · 07/03/2021 12:17

@oopsydaisyyy I’m 9 weeks. Had my booking in appointment this week. Honestly like you say I think it was more to do with the sonographer. We had that particular lady a few times and she wasn’t pleasant, but did have a couple later on (I had extra growth scans, one positive of the bmi situation) and the lady later one was so lovely so try not to worry, it’s reassuring to know a lot of people have had really good scans. Me and hubby would be in the waiting room trying to guess which sonographer we were going to get.

Sunflowerx · 07/03/2021 13:09

I've found my people!

Currently 9+3 with a bmi of 43, had my booking appointment last week and surprisingly had no comments about my weight yet but they did seem surprised when my blood pressure come back normal!

Taking 5mg folic acid and 150mg aspirin daily, other than that everything seems to have been pretty straight forward so far, had a scan at 8 weeks and was able to see the little blob on screen with an abdominal scan and half full bladder! X

I've found this even before being pregnant. Never in my life have I had high blood pressure. Even though I've always been over weight. A midwife with my last pregnancy checked it 4 times because she said "it can't be right" The same midwife considered sending me for a second GD test "Just to be sure" because it came back normal. Not even slightly raised.
Fartymcfart · 07/03/2021 13:51

Hi, I'm currently 19+5 with a high BMI. All going well, though I'm also "geriatric" apparently, though everyone has been lovely so far. Got my 20 week scan at the end of next week. Not told anyone yet and you can't tell I'm pregnant as I already looked pregnant before!!! Grin.
So far this has been exactly the same as all my other pregnancies. Wishing everyone well

KHR1 · 07/03/2021 14:17

@kerbearr yeah, I think the only reason I'm swaying towards wanting it is not being able to work from home anymore. If it wasn't for that I'd much rather wait too.

This is probably a bit of a daft question but with the 150mg of folic acid does it make a difference if you have 2x75mg or half of a 300mg? I haven't asked for a prescription yet as I don't have my exemption and managed to get the 75mg easily last time, but I can't seem get them anywhere at the moment though.

It's all the same

LittleTiger007 · 07/03/2021 15:00

Hi Ladles, I have a BMI of 40 (or it was in November) I have been eating healthily, in some weeks I have been so hungry and so I have listened to my body and fed it when it needs it. In recent weeks I have really suffered with reflux and my stomach gets full really quickly due to the pressure of the baby on my stomach. As a result I tend to eat the protein and veg and I have lost just over half a stone since Christmas without trying. Baby is doing well. I’m now at 29 weeks. Midwives haven’t made an issue of my weight but my doctor always does! Im sure they will send an invite for a covid jab soon because of this.
I take pregnancy vitamins and have not taken extra folic acid as I have made sure to nibble on nuts & seeds every day. And I also have granola with yoghurt every day for breakfast. If you can get the folic acid naturally then it’s best.

pixiedust21 · 07/03/2021 18:02

Really reassuring to hear of others in a similar position and all going well with scans and pregnancy etc :)

Though I am trying my best to eat healthily I have been super hungry the last couple of days and finding it hard not to snack on everything in sight, sometimes an apple doesn't cut it 😅

I think being pregnant might finally jolt me into a healthier eating pattern, learning that everything in moderation is okay 👍🏻 had a lovely walk today too.

Quite nervous/excited for my booking in appointment on Friday, it might help things feel a bit more real!

BabyC21 · 07/03/2021 20:28

So happy to find this thread. My BMI is 44 and I’m 17 weeks. Been suffering pretty bad with anxiety both for covid and being pregnant at this weight. Great to hear that many have had successful pregnancies at a high BMI

oopsydaisyyy · 07/03/2021 21:47

Hey everyone, lovely to see so many of us in similar situations. Its great to be able to relate to another human 😅.

@pixiedust21, love the idea about posting pics of our plus size bumps! Although im not convinced im going to have a noticeable bump Blush Lets see !

Those of you who are further along, have you felt baby kicking/ moving? When did you feel them? Wondering if this time round it'll take me longer to feel anything due to extra padding Grin

Hi ladies, it’s so comforting to read your own stories and hear about your situations, I also have a high BMI 37 on booking, don’t think I’ve put much on - maybe a few pounds ( but I haven’t checked - that’s just another thing for me to become anxious over if start that) eating as healthy as possible - I’m nearly 22 weeks now, unfortunately not got a great experience to share with scans as both my 12 week and 20 weeks have been ‘ suboptimal views due to maternal body habitus’ such a lovely phrase, wasn’t even able to get my NT scan so I paid for private NIPT which thankfully all came back low risk 1 in 100,000, also 38 so another anxiety there, I’ve had private scans and funnily enough they’ve all been much clearer ... anxiety is a bit high at the mo especially with kids being back at school tomorrow and the covid thing, as long as we are all doing the best we can then that’s all that matters - x

Forgot to mention ... I didn’t feel anything noticeable until 20 weeks - anterior placenta may well be too blame, maybe the extra chub? 🙄 there’s no pattern as such even now at 22 weeks and I’m not feeling loads of movement but there’s defo some 😃

Hannah295 · 08/03/2021 10:13

So glad to have found this thread! My bmi is 41 and I'm having my first baby. Can I ask for those of you who have had babies before, how did you labour go? I'm worried I will need to have a c section and would like to avoid it if I can. I have been told how those who are very overweight will need more intervention so would love to hear some of your stories x

AdventuresAwait · 08/03/2021 10:31

Can I join please? I'm 13+4 with my first baby and have a BMI of 39.
I've been referred to consultant care and was prescribed daily aspirin.
Wondering when I'll start to show due to my weight and hoping things will be OK. Blood pressure is good (I usually have good blood pressure readings). Think I'm worrying more due to my weight but also know that many have a raised BMI with no problems...
