Hi everyone,

Im currently pregnant 10wk today. I was losing weight before I found out I was pregnant and it was a surprise BFP as drs were convinced I had PCOS.

Really anxious as my BMI is still over 50! So wanted to start this thread to see if theres anyone else in a similar situation? Lets ride the waves together ladies Grin
@ElmtreeMama what are you worried about regarding the scan?

I am 14+2 and have now had 2 scans (My dates were a bit off so was only 10 weeks at first scan so had to come back!) and both were positive and easy experiences.

I've just had my results back from the screening test and showing as low risk for the screening so feel relieved.

Next appointment is consultant appointment on Tuesday and I am pretty nervous/feel a bit crap about it. I feel crap that I am in this position because of my own weight that I have to see a consultant. I'm sure they will just discuss any risks and it will all be done professionally but I just feel rubbish.

It hasn't helped that I've been so sick for a few weeks and my diet has been terrible as I could only stomach carbs. I am starting to come out of that now so the only thing I can do is focus on the time ahead where I'll try to eat well and I'm also going to be starting to swim regularly again and take more exercise.

I think I am just nervous about being spoken down to or treated badly because of my weight however everyone so far has been professional and kind, only mentioning my BMI in passing or when needed in a clinical way but nobody has like dropped dead of shock that I have dared to get pregnant or anything. 😬
I guess just that my tummy will block them seeing anything and I don't want a transvaginal!

I hope your consultant appt goes OK, I've actually lost a little bit since getting pregnant just because of feeling sick but that seems to be easing now

kerbearr · 29/04/2021 17:47

Hi @Taenia I was so anxious at the beginning of my pregnancy thinking my weight was going to be a big concern. I'm 28 weeks tomorrow and I've never had any mention of my weight, I'm carrying twins so am consultant led anyways and a high risk pregnancy because of that, been on aspirin from 12 weeks but so far my pregnancy has been complication free I hope it stays that way, I've actually seen my consultant less than my sister in law who has no weight issue but is consultant led due to pre eclampsia is her last pregnancy. I've to start taking clexane injections tomorrow I'm sure that's a twin issue and because of my weight I'm on a higher dose, that's the only time my weight was ever mentioned. So it's very possible to have a very healthy pregnancy with a higher BMI ☺️

pixiedust21 · 29/04/2021 17:50

@ElmtreeMama in both scans I basically held my belly up a little when they went to do the scan (to save the embarrassment of them asking I guess) as I carry a lot of my weight around the middle. Not sure of your weight/BMI but my scan was fine. My BMI is 38.

The second scan she did have to push quite hard - but could see baby absolutely fine both times, and the pictures came out fine too. They were able to take baby's measurements with no issues too.

They do put in the notes about a suboptimal view due to maternal habitus ! But nothing was said and I know I have a tummy so it was fine.

pixiedust21 · 04/05/2021 11:09

I had my first consultant appointment today which I was kind of dreading / didn't know what to expect. It was completely fine so I hope this reassured anyone who is due to have one.

I had my blood pressure and gave a urine sample first (wish they had actually told me this in advance as I didn't really need a wee so wasn't exactly a good sample!)

Then I saw one of the doctors (not actually the consultant but she's on the same team) who was really nice. Checking I was doing okay and then just went through some of the risk factors they have to monitor due to BMI. Other than BMI I am low risk/pretty straightforward as no other issues.

I've been booked for a glucose tolerance test at about 26 weeks and will have an extra appointment and scan at 36 weeks. But the whole appointment was fine and I didn't feel crap like I thought I might!

Fartymcfart · 18/05/2021 14:29

Hi, How is everyone?

I'm 30 weeks now, got a growth scan at 32+2 weeks which is something to look forward too.

ElmtreeMama · 18/05/2021 14:33

Hi @Fartymcfart!

I had my dating scan today and am 13weeks and 1.5kg up from booking appt so need to cut back on the chocolate and crisps I think Blush

Fartymcfart · 18/05/2021 17:06

Hi @ElmtreeMama, glad all is well, 1.5kg isn't too bad, though hard in the early stages when I could only face cards.
I've lost about 8kg since I got weighed literally no room in my stomach probably a giant baby.

Taenia · 24/05/2021 10:40

Thought id post an update too.. the midwife referred me to bloom because of my weight so habe monthly chats with someone to help me make sure I stuck within the recommended weight gain for my high BMI. I was dreading it.. expecting the woman to be all judgemental and such.. my eating isn't particulary unhealthy when I wasn't pregnant it was more late meals before bed due to busy schedules and lack of mobility due to RA. Well my first appointment was actually lovely. The lady was very understanding and supportive and it wasn't at all a day by day the is what you must eat type of plan but more about portion sizes and how many of each type of food group I should try to eat.. I've been awfully sick in this 1st trimester so she also gave me a load of helpful information on how to survive that and reassurance that it's fine to eat whatever I can stomach this first trimester. But yes was a much better experience than I was expecting it to be and I've agreed to continue with the appointments over my pregnancy - but do have the option to change my mind at any time.

I also had my 12 week scan last week...something else I was worried about and it was fine. Sonographer was lovley and didn't have any problems at all finding baby or giving images. She even apologised for having to write in my notes about being a larger lady.. and said she had wanted to explain it all so I didn't feel upset or put down. The baby isn't as far along as we had expected but there was no concerns- strong heart beat and active and I get to go back again for the screening next week (as baby was too small to do it at 10 weeks)

So all in all. Despite the anxiety I felt before hand I'm feeling much happier and supported about it all... just need to get rid of the sickness side of things now but hopefully as I'm 11 weeks I won't have too much longer to go.. (unless sods law finds me unfortunate enough to be sick all the way through)

PurpleFlower1983 · 24/05/2021 10:58

Hi all, I have a growth scan at 32 weeks too and having a private scan today (30+3). Everything seems to be going well although baby was measuring 2cm ahead at my last midwife appointment. My DD was always 3cm ahead though and was 7lb 8 when born at 38 weeks so I’m not overly concerned.

Still doing Slimming World and now lost 13lbs since my booking appointment. I can’t quite believe I’ve stuck with it!

Chelyanne · 24/05/2021 17:20

Hope all are well and have active little ones thriving.

I was a bit jealous of many on here getting growth scans as standard as my consultant said I wasn't at 16+6wk.
Today it seems they've changed their mind, due to my big boy being 4.88kg at birth they want me to have growth scans at 30 & 36wk. Yay, happy with that despite a 3 hour wait to see them (my poor spd hips are not happy now). Starting on blood thinners tomorrow (28wk) until 6wk postpartum, they needed to weigh me for dosage and their scales put me over a kilo lighter than our home scales (small joys lol).

Fartymcfart · 22/06/2021 21:54

Hi all, has anyone managed to find any decent nursing bras??

Bells3032 · 22/06/2021 22:28

Hello. Lovely to find this thread. I just found out I am 7+4 with twins. Didn't realise I was pregnant til a week ago. Was a shock pregnancy between ivf cycles.

My bmi I think is around 38.

I am on normal folic acid no ones said otherwise. I've been taking it for over a year now. I only reffered to midwives yesterday (was under the ivf clinic before that). Should I start taking higher dose now? How much should I take? Or wait til my booking appointment.

Thanks for all your stories. Glad to see so many pregnancies doing well

PineappleSun · 22/06/2021 22:49

@Fartymcfart I got these (hate underwire) and they're very comfy but I'm not using them for feeding just yet. I got an XL as a pre pregnancy size 18 and they fit well.

@Bells3032 I just called the GP and got them to prescribe 5mg over the phone when I found out, seems a nonsense to wait until 8 weeks.

Chelyanne · 23/06/2021 01:03

@fartymcfart I've been looking at the M&S and George @ Asda ones. Not sure if they're worth investing in though as I've never managed to do well with breastfeeding, will try but already have bottles and formula in ready too. This girly is on the 97th centile for growth and will most likely have a big appetite like our others did.

Cantbebotheredtothinkofaname · 23/06/2021 07:04

Congratulations @Bells3032 that’s amazing, you must be so thrilled it happened naturally as well! I would give your GP practice a call and explain and they will prescribe you the higher dose, I didn’t see my midwife until 11 weeks this time, but it’s my second so I knew I should be on the higher dose so they sorted it when I was about 5 weeks.

@Fartymcfart I get mine from M&S, they have a good range of nursing bras even for plus size, I breastfed my first until they were 2yo. I like non underwired non padded for nursing but they did seem to cover other kinds as well.

Bells3032 · 23/06/2021 08:34

@Cantbebotheredtothinkofaname I'll try and speak to the gp today. But euch they have been useless since the start of covid (they were always great precovid) always like 24 people in the queue

Fartymcfart · 23/06/2021 10:51

Thanks, I think I'm just being fussy.
I'll take a look at m&s

Bells3032 · 23/06/2021 10:57

Thanks for the advice. rung the GP and they told me someone would call me back. they called me back 5 minutes later (apparently she had a cancelation and I just got in there).

She's prescribed me high dose folic acid and i can pick it up from my local pharmacy this pm

maggiemoo1981 · 09/11/2021 12:04

Hi Ladies, sorry for the long post, I am so anxious about my high BMI, its 45 (although I weigh naked and I have it at 44 lol). But I was super excited about my pregnancy as its my first, I am 10+2 and had an early scan due to some pain i was having, so far all is good. What adds extra anxiety for me is the fact I have just turned 40 as well (and a few medical issues such as previous blood clots.......ugh!!) so I am high risk for all these things, its really started to make me feel worried about this pregnancy. Is there anyone of similar age and BMI who can share some positive stories at all please? I am also really torn over if I should do the screening tests, from what I have seen its likely to come back high risk just due to my age. I hate feeling like this, I have always wanted kids but took a while to meet the right person, I am in a lot better shape than I used to be as I have lost 4 stone before getting pregnant. Thanks for listening x

FF821 · 09/11/2021 12:39

@maggiemoo1981 Hiya! Similar situation here, my bmi was 37 at booking in, so classed as obese! Also 38 when I got pregnant... just turned 39 at delivery... had bad anxiety around pregnancy and delivery because of the worries about weight and age ... so I ended up struggling for most of it, worrying about screening tests, blood clots ( ended up having investigations ) worried about putting on minimal weight etc, for the most part I was my own worst enemy! At my 12 week scan they couldn't get the measurements needed for the screening tests, the sonographer bluntly told me it was because of my weight, I didn't bother with the Down syndrome only bloods they offered as that wouldn't have made an ounce of difference to me plus they aren't very accurate, I paid for a nipt test at 24 weeks as I'd wound myself up convinced there was something wrong, there wasn't anything wrong and all came back as very low risk 1 in 100,000. All of my ultrasounds at the hospital where poor quality and they could never fully check everything so again I worked myself up and paid for private scans .. where they had more time to check things! I had an elective section at 39'weeks as I'd worked myself up about everything, all went to plan - baby is happy and healthy and 4 months now,and I'm recovered and just a bit sleep deprived, basically my experience with the weight and age thing was all fine... I just worked myself up reading negative things, I ate really healthy and only put on 4 kg, you can do it, just don't let the negative thoughts take over xx

maggiemoo1981 · 09/11/2021 12:43

@FF821 thank you so much thats good to hear. I know that all the docs/midwifes have to tell you all the risks but I think where they fail is they dont try to reassure you and tell you how small the percentage chances actually are. Thank you for sharing your experience, that helps x

FF821 · 09/11/2021 12:59

@maggiemoo1981 glad I could help a little, I was you this time last year, so I know how worrying can run away with you, honestly though I was constantly told I wasn't old by today's standards and other than one sonographer who mentioned my weight it wasn't really brought up, I was just warned the risk of infection after c section was a risk ( it didn't happen to me) you'll be under consultant led care and I'd assume they'll put you on blood thinning injections at your first consultant appointment ( if you aren't already on them) it is a stressful time but it'll all be worth it xx

maggiemoo1981 · 09/11/2021 13:03

@FF821 I know plenty of people have pregnancies with no issues at this age and people are having them older and older, I think its the weight that bothers me more. I had the scan at 9+5 and they managed to get a half decent picture and measurements (that was a concern that they wouldnt be able to see). She did have to push pretty hard on my belly but I can live with that. Hopefully 12 weeks will be easier. Yes I am already on heparin due to my past blood clots (lung). It seems as I have got older, I have got more anxious. But yes will be so worth it, thank you xx

Clomid1 · 09/11/2021 13:05

Just marking my place here as I have a bmi of 31 and am classed as high risk and consultant led

Pregnantfatandafraid · 22/04/2022 17:38
