Hi everyone,

Im currently pregnant 10wk today. I was losing weight before I found out I was pregnant and it was a surprise BFP as drs were convinced I had PCOS.

Really anxious as my BMI is still over 50! So wanted to start this thread to see if theres anyone else in a similar situation? Lets ride the waves together ladies Grin

I might update to bmi with the doctors then! Thanks! It's interesting that you didn't have to show anything at the vaccination appointment @LikeSomeKindOfMadness apparently some areas have had to have letters or prescriptions for it when pregnant

KHR1 · 10/03/2021 08:01

Does anyone have any healthy(ish?) snacks they find filling? Now that I'm over the nausea I'm always hungry but conscious of eating too many unhealthy snacks...

pixiedust21 · 10/03/2021 14:31

All I can stomach at the moment are plain stodgy foods which isn't great! Today I've had an apple, some white toast and some Pringles!!

The thought of anything else makes me feel sick though so it's a tough one. Envy

Just had my telephone booking in appointment with the midwife - was pretty nervous for some reason but it was good. Very matter of fact and quite reassuring, she explained what blood tests I'll be getting done later today.

I had concerns because of my BMI but again she was very matter of fact and just focused on the care I would get and encouraged me to keep staying healthy as I am doing at the moment. She was not shocked or horrified and was actually pretty reassuring!

All in all very good and I'll be getting a letter by 11 weeks for my scan (currently 9+3). Popping in to surgery later to get bloods done, weight and height (yuck) and urine sample. Lovely.

She did mention to me it might be worth trying to get a flu vaccine as it's still technically flu season so might be worth speaking to my surgery about that.

@justsaymaybe

I'm not pregnant now, but I've had 3 pregnancies at BMI 50+ and never had any problems, perfect blood pressure and no diabetes (to the surprise of the doctors). I did end up with an emergency C-section with my first due to lack of progress (got to 4cm and stopped), but as I wanted a C-section anyway I was fine with that. I then had 2 electives and they were all fine. You may find that you get some blunt doctors (especially the anaesthetist I found), but I was aware of the risks before I got pregnant so nothing came as a surprise. There's no point being offended as I know I was high risk so I just nodded along. In my last pregnancy 3 years ago I had to take a blood thinner injection every day from 16 weeks until 2 weeks after birth, but for the previous 2 I didn't. It may have been a different protocol as I moved to a new area before my 3rd was born. I had extra scans as there was no point measuring growth with a tape measure, but I always liked the reassurance of the extra scans, so they were a bonus to me. If anyone has any questions, I'm happy to answer.
I think the protocol has changed re the injections as I had them with my first pregnancy (BMI 33) but have been told I’m not above the threshold this time even though my BMI is now over 35.

I’ve just bought some Finn rye crackers/thins and have them with the Seriously Strong low fat cheese spread. They’re really nice.
Fartymcfart · 12/03/2021 16:19

Had my scan today at 20.3wks, all well!

Though didn't get a good picture, as baby wouldn't stay still long enough or show the scanner their face, so took ages to get some measurements. Had to move around loads so she could get the measurements but baby would then shift so they had their back to her.

pixiedust21 · 12/03/2021 16:25

Just been for bloods etc with midwife. Had my blood pressure taken which I had convinced myself would be high because of my weight but it was perfect.

I do have to see a consultant as well when I go for my scan but the midwife didn't seem overly worried. It's just one of those things.

Just hoping everything stays fine. I hate getting tests done as I start to convince myself they'll find something wrong when I didn't know I had it, but fingers crossed all will stay okay!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/03/2021 18:10

Not currently pregnant but had a bmi of 40 when I had my son, he's now 2.5. Great pregnancy, healthy throughout and we're about to TTC again, so hopefully I'll be back on this thread in a few months!

PurpleFlower1983 · 12/03/2021 18:42

I had my 20w scan today, all normal and measuring bang on the 50th centile.

KHR1 · 12/03/2021 19:06

Congrats to those who had 20 week scans! Glad they went well!

@PurpleFlower1983 thanks, I've just put some on my food shop!

Peony2021 · 13/03/2021 07:07

Hi ladies, hoping to join this thread I'm 30 first time mum and BMI of 37. I had lost weight during 2020 and dropped to BMI of 34 then had an early miscarriage and of course piled it all back on again after that and over Christmas 🤦🏻‍♀️ bit annoyed at myself but these things happen! Almost 9 weeks have been for an private early scan and going for another private early one on Tuesday. Very nervous about booking in appointment with NHS on the 9th April because of my weight. Looks like some great advice on this thread already, I must try slimming world again. I've lost about 4lbs so far this pregnancy purely with sickness 🤢 xx

acrossthemultiverse · 13/03/2021 11:04

Good luck everyone going for scans. I had a ten week scan and everything was ok and next week I'm booked for my dating scan when I'll be 13 weeks. Felt so relieved after the ten week and now back to worrying again!!

I've gutted our cupboards and bought lots of good healthy food in and lots of high protein foods. Luckily my husband is a health nut so he's a great support. It's just me who wants all the ice cream and Cadbury mini eggs! Blush

MKe21 · 13/03/2021 11:05

Hi all. Very early days here for me. Im due AF today at 15dpo but had my first BFP at 9dpo. The last 6 days have felt like an eternity. This will be my second baby. My BMI is around 30 on the dot but was 31 a few weeks ago so have been taking the 5mg folic acid for about 6 weeks now.

In my last pregnancy my BMI was around 28 but I was just on the normal pregnacare vitamins. I lost a lot of weight in the 1st trimester with sickness and could barely eat food. Midwife told me as long as I was having my vitamins baby would be fine.

However this time round I'm only taking the 5mg folic acid, vitamin D and calcium. So far no sickness so trying to eat healthy but I'm worried about when morning sickness hits and I'm not getting any vitamins from elsewhere. Is anyone taking any extra vitamins?

I'm not sure when to ring the doctors? At the minute I have no symptoms so doesn't even really feel real and I'm a bag of nerves. In my last pregnancy I definitely didn't feel rough til around week 6 so im trying not to worry about lack of symptoms just yet..

Glad to be on board with you all x

MKe21 · 14/03/2021 19:12

Hi all

Can I ask if you are all taking 5mg of folic acid only (and vitD) or are you taking a pregnancy supplement on top of the 5mg? I thought it was 5mg only but then something I read seemed to say it was an additional 5mg?

lilymty · 14/03/2021 20:49

I'm taking the seven seas multi vitamin. I'm 34 weeks & it was not suggested I take any other medication other than aspirin.

LikeSomeKindOfMadness · 15/03/2021 07:29

I'm taking it on top of my normal pregnacare. I did last time too as I still felt I needed the other vitamins.
I bought the 5mg from amazon when we started TTC so I am still using that.

TheBigGreenDinosaur · 15/03/2021 08:50

Hi ladies, bit late to the party but can I join? I’m 12 weeks and my BMI is 41. This is my second, I got pregnant first try with my first, like some of you girls have said I too thought it would take ages and intended to lose weight but didn’t get chance 😂 I also fell first time with this one, I’ve been very lucky.

I found attitudes a mix with my first, the doctors did seem to be convinced I’d have high blood pressure, but I didn’t! My labour did not go well and ended up with an EMCS but that was due to babies position, not my weight. My pregnancy was textbook and stress free though.

This time I’ve been taking extra folic acid on top of pregnacare, just stopped that and started on aspirin at the request of my midwife. My BMI hasn’t been mentioned at all this time, I think it’s because I have had a CS they just focus on that. I have lost about 10lbs since I found out. I haven’t been offered the vaccination yet, but I’m sure an invite will be on its way soon as I will fall into group 6 due to my BMI, my midwife said they will not advise me what to do but will allow me to have the vaccine if I want it. At the moment I’m going to wait and see what happens with the numbers.

Does anyone know where I can get some nice plus size maternity wear? For some reason a lot of shops seem to think plus size women don’t get pregnant or wear a sack or something if they are over a size 18 😂

LikeSomeKindOfMadness · 15/03/2021 10:56

@TheBigGreenDinosaur that would be great abut Materbjty wear. It all seems so shapeless. I had a few wide dresses last time and then i lived in leggings but would be nice to have some nice stuff.

KHR1 · 15/03/2021 11:51

@TheBigGreenDinosaur Nice plus size maternity wear is hard to find! Last time I got a lot of asda stuff but struggling this time. Yours has quite a few things when I looked but I think some of their things seem overpriced when they are only useful for a short amount of time.

Peony2021 · 15/03/2021 16:12

Hey I asked this specifically of my GP and he said he recommended taking both. I was on pregnacare max but switched to seven seas purely because they are fractionally smaller and my sickness needed all the help it could get getting those bad boys down 😂
bewitchingnight · 15/03/2021 16:26

Hello all, hope you don't mind me joining! I'm 14+5 and bmi at booking in was 42. Been pleasantly surprised by how matter of fact / non judgemental everyone has been so far. I had my first consultant appointment today over the phone and they basically said I'm all good until 32 weeks when the extra growth scans start.

Maternity clothes wise I haven't got much yet but I did get some jeans and trousers from H&M which are very comfy. I'd say I was a 20-22 for trousers and the XXL are probably slightly on the big side. Tops are tricky- I feel bigger but haven't got a bump yet so I don't want anything to emphasise the stomach yet! Grin

Chelyanne · 15/03/2021 16:55

@MKe21 I have the prescribed folic acid on top of my pregnancy multivitamin and some omega 3 capsules too.

Chelyanne · 15/03/2021 16:58

I saw my consultant last week, they want me on blood thinners from 28 weeks until 6 weeks post-partum. Mix of high BMI, my age and it being baby number 6 put me high risk for clots. Had injections after my elcs last time but will be new to doing them during pregnancy. Better safe than sorry though.

MKe21 · 15/03/2021 18:54

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realise we should take the normal pregnancy vitamins too. Since being pregnant I've since lost a tiny bit of weight (unintentionally) and BMI is 29.8 but still think I should be on the higher dose? And plus the pregnancy vitamins too. Is there such a thing as too much folic acid?
