Hi everyone,

Im currently pregnant 10wk today. I was losing weight before I found out I was pregnant and it was a surprise BFP as drs were convinced I had PCOS.

Really anxious as my BMI is still over 50! So wanted to start this thread to see if theres anyone else in a similar situation? Lets ride the waves together ladies Grin

I notice a few have said you are getting growth scans...

My consultant said I will not get any growth scans unless my fundal height measures ahead for dates. I've had big babies (biggest 10lb 12oz) so was a bit miffed by this decision.

Fartymcfart · 17/03/2021 11:45

@Chelyanne

I am getting a 32 week growth span, not because of my BMI but because apparently my first baby was very small??? only on the 5th percentile.

I would have thought if you have large babies they would offer, might be worth asking?

Fartymcfart · 17/03/2021 11:46

oh I've never had growth scans in any of my other pregnancies even though its my 1st baby they are saying was small?? I'm guessing in the years between my last and this one something has changed?

Chelyanne · 17/03/2021 12:26

@fartymcfart 5th centile is very small, maybe they are concerned that you may have had placental issues. They do tend to keep a closer eye on smaller or larger babies. I think it varies by trust and consultant as to how cautious they are.

I did ask if I would get one but she said that even if I had another big baby they wouldn't be worried about me, I've had 3 fairly easy vb's. I usually measure ahead from around 28wk so expect this one may too, if not I'll book a private growth scan as I'd rather know roughly how big to expect. This will be my 1st vbac if baby is in a good position (had breech twins via elcs last time), they said my scar should be fine but I will have to get to hospital as soon as labor starts in case of scar rupture.

I called my GP today and asked about taking pregnacare on top of the folic acid 5mg and they said they'd pass my message onto the doctor as the midwife can't speak to me til 6th April.

Just got a really brief text message saying 'no dont take it just eat a balanced diet

Feel a bit deflated. Right now at 4+4vmy diet is ok but if I get sickness like I did last time after 6 weeks I'm just going to be on ice pops and beige carbs so how will my baby get vitamins?

Take the vitamins if you want to. Nothing bad will come from you taking pregnacare plus your folic acid. It will clearly put your mind at ease.

MKe21 · 17/03/2021 17:25

@toolatetofixate ah ok so there's no such thing as too much folic acid? Will my body just get rid of the excess?

toolatetofixate · 17/03/2021 17:32
@toolatetofixate ah ok so there's no such thing as too much folic acid? Will my body just get rid of the excess?
Pregnacare comes in different varieties like pregnacare plus and so on. So there may be one with the folic acid separate.

I'm not sure because I don't use it. Instead I take separate vitamins. You could do this. If you look up the vitamins in pregnacare tablets you could buy them individually.

I take folic acid, vitamin D, omega 3 and a vitamin C, B and iron liquid formula. The liquid formula I mix with a half glass of orange or mango juice in the morning and use it to take the other 3 pills.

I'm happy with that as I already took these vitamins every day anyway (except the folic acid) before pregnancy so I'm just carrying on as I am.

Balanced diet is the most important thing. Try to get lots of calcium, leafy greens and protein into you. (You can take a calcium supplement but I don't bother as I chug milk like there's no tomorrow. Pints of it every day so I stick to skimmed)

Chelyanne · 17/03/2021 17:39

Your body can not store folic acid, it can only store fat soluble vitamins so most are discarded via the urine if not needed.

There are a few theories on too much folic acid but they don't seem to know how much is too much.

PineappleSun · 17/03/2021 17:57

My midwife told me to take the 5mg folic acid on top of pregnacare, I was just taking vitamin D and folic acid before my booking appointment but now I'm on folic acid, pregnacare and aspirin. Wondering if I can stop the folic acid when it runs out now I'm over 12 weeks.

TheBigGreenDinosaur · 17/03/2021 19:29

My midwife said take the 5mg folic acid and pregnancare on top of it as well. I have stopped taking folic acid and switched to aspirin as I’m 12+3 now Smile if you want to take it I’d just take it, it won’t do anything bad!

pixiedust21 · 17/03/2021 19:37

I was only advised to take 5mg folic acid and a high dose of vitamin d Confused hope everything will be okay... I'm 10 weeks.

PurpleFlower1983 · 17/03/2021 19:42

I’ve been given 2 extra growth scans at 32 weeks and 36 weeks. They also said I will have a meeting with the anaesthetist. The consultant was happy that I’d lost weight and just said don’t lose too much and keep eating healthily. They also said I should be able to go to the midwife led unit as long as everything looks ok. I’m just taking Pregnacare.

Springsnake · 17/03/2021 19:47

Bmi 50 with last 2 pregnancies,no problems, except midwife attitude constantly expecting problems..
Lots of comments about expecting ,this problem or that problem, constantly saying my delivery will be difficult, due to my weight.

No high blood pressure,no problems, normal births ,normal weight gain ,kids now in their 20s

FTEngineerM · 17/03/2021 19:51

Hellooooo well this is a cool idea 😀

I’m 14+3 and my bmi was 33.5 at booking but already at 35😬 so well into obese.

Been taking 5mg folic acid.

How’re you all feeling?
I was this weight at my last pregnancy too so I don’t know any different.

pixiedust21 · 17/03/2021 20:11

It's really reassuring hearing of people's experiences of healthy pregnancies and deliveries with high BMI.

My main concern at the moment is that while I'm certainly not trying to gain weight (and in fact lost a little in the early early weeks) - all I can stomach is carbs and not hugely healthy foods! It's awful but it's the only thing not making me feel sick.

If this lasts I'll put on even more weight and feel rubbish so I hope it passes.

I am trying to exercise every day though to somewhat offset the carbs!!!

Firsttimemumm31 · 18/03/2021 07:32

Hi everyone, hope you don't mind me posting here. Had my 20 week scan yesterday and got to go back in 2 weeks as baby was being wriggly though obviously on the paperwork it's all 'maternal Habitus' 🤦🏻‍♀️ when I asked at the begging to know the sex and the sonographer laughed and said 'I'll be lucky to see anything' kind of put me off and I just wanted to go home! I don't know how everyone else feels but I feel my first pregnancy has been under somewhat of a cloud due to my BMI (40) even though I haven't put on a single pound in that 20 weeks everything is about my weight! Argh! I'm well aware of my weight but I can magically loose it overnight! Anyway sorry about the mini rant hope everyone else's pregnancy is going well 💖

TheBigGreenDinosaur · 18/03/2021 07:47

@Firsttimemumm31 I’m sorry that happened, I had exactly the same in my first pregnancy, I thought it would be the same this time but so far it hasn’t been, I think it’s because I had an EMCS so there are other things to focus on, but with your first it’s a clean slate so they focus on what they deem to be the highest risk. I think some sonographers and doctors need to work on their bedside manner! It’s also rubbish about extra weight affecting the scans, I went for a private scan and the sonographer said it’s more to do with where your uterus is in your body. I have my scan next week so I’ll have all this to come no doubt 😅

I was 140 kilos when I found out I was pregnant. I got gestational diabetes and was so scared. By the time I went into hospital, I was 115 kilos. When she came out, 105 kilos. She was healthy (3.5 kilos). I controlled my blood sugar perfectly. It's the only time in my life I've ever managed to give myself a shake and sort it out. I also walked for an hour a day. I followed the advice on gestational diabetes on facebook page. It was perfect.

Wow! That’s crazy weight loss well done! I’ve lost 11lbs and I thought I was doing well but yours is off the scale! Well done!
Firsttimemumm31 · 18/03/2021 08:29

@TheBigGreenDinosaur thanks, yes it's certainly been an experience so far ... just feels unfair that the levels of support and bedside manner appear to be so different when you have a high BMI 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also just realised in my original post it autocorrected beginning to begging 🤣

Alittlexmasmagic · 18/03/2021 12:29

Just joining but been lurking for a while. I'd got my BMI under 30 in November, then Xmas happened, I was 32 at booking in. Now it's 34. I seriously need to make an effort to not put any more on and maybe even loose some. I'm 17 weeks now so by August I'll be heavier than I've ever been in either of my 2 previous pregnancies.
I never cancelled my WW membership so going to get back on it as of Monday and will try not to pig out as much now.
xx

Chelyanne · 18/03/2021 12:55

@firsttimemumm31 that really annoys me too. The sonographer is having trouble with scanning so automatically puts it down to your weight. Yeah well other sonographers didn't have such trouble doing it so I think it's more likely they're just not as good at their job as they think they are. flick them the birdy in my head lol

ElaineC82 · 19/03/2021 19:24

Hi ladies, thanks for creating this thread, I have a high bmi 37 and I’m looking at a c section for various reasons, just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with c section with a high Bmi, any complications etc, or likewise any complications with VB and high bmi, thanks x x

TheBigGreenDinosaur · 19/03/2021 19:36

I had a c section with my first, I didn’t have any problems getting a spinal and healed like a dream! I was up and about just 5 hours after surgery and discharged about 36 hours afterwards (would have been sooner but they lost a blood sample of mine). No complications when healing except one stitch that didn’t dissolve properly and just needed to be snipped at my GP’s. I was driving about 2 weeks after (checked with insurance company first) but probably could have driven from about a week if I had needed to. I think I was very lucky with my healing, I just did the same as other mums I know and some got an infection and some didn’t.
