Hi ladies hope your all okay and doing well. Im 28 weeks tomorrow, just wondering what everyones thoughts on packing hospital bags is? This is my third and you'd think I know by now but I'm so unsure when to have everything ready by.

DD was born at exactly 36 weeks, I was 18 at the time and I remember my sister in law encouraged me to have my bag ready by 30 weeks and I'm glad I did.
DS I literally don't remember when I packed but I think it was around the same time? I'm glad I did as I started having sudden contractions at 34 weeks and had to stay in hospital for two days, had steroid injections so his lungs would develop really quickly in case he came but they managed to stop my contractions and he stayed in until 37 weeks.

This time round I've bought all the main bits and bobs for my bag but I just feel like it's too early to pack everything and I keep telling myself to wait a few weeks, I've been reading previous threads where women literally pack their bag whilst in labour or wait until week 38/39 I've never even made it to that far so I don't know what to do.

What's everyone else doing?

Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt · 06/08/2020 12:07

I'm 28 on Saturday, second baby. I've started putting some bits together in a drawer, mainly for me so far. I've bought some cheap flip flops, a lightweight dressing gown, nursing bras, and putting soke creams and mini toiletries to one side as I get them (I have a beauty box subscription so get lots on mini stuff monthly). Ive also done an excel sheet which has helped focus my mind!

Mc3209 · 06/08/2020 12:39

@SamK93 I started putting it together already. Hopefully will finish in a week or two.

I have in and ordered a birthing ball. Starting to get back pain, and sitting or standing for long times is not comfortable. Hopefully it will be a good alternative to sit on, as I am back to working from home next week. And might come in handy after birth to get back into shape..

1990shopefulftm · 06/08/2020 13:09

@Samk93, I m thinking I ll get it started around 30 weeks , I need to get nappies and milk but I think I have everything clothes wise for both of us.
I m not sure what to do for what food to take apart from crisps and some sports drinks and I need to think about what to put in the bag for DH.

GhostWorld · 06/08/2020 13:25

I'm delaying putting a bag together as I'm not sure whether to wash the baby clothes now or wait until just before, does it matter?

SamK93 · 06/08/2020 13:37

@GhostWorld literally having the same thought, I'm going to wash the baby clothes over the weekend put the ones I need in to the bag and rest away in drawer I'm sure they'll be absolutely fine.

@1990shopefulftm I was thinking same food wise, I got diagnosed with coeliac disease a couple of years ago so I know I'll probably have limited options at hospital so I'm going to go with gluten free cereal/energy bars, biscuits and drink. I think the DH will be fine, as they can be in and out and get anything they need food and drink wise. I bought a couple of extra phone charger wires and put one in my bag that will stay there as I remember with DS I forgot my charger and DH phone battery died fairly soon after he was born and we didn't get many pics straight after birth.

DressingGown87 · 06/08/2020 13:44

@SamK93 I’ve done mine a few weeks ago, but just with my stuff. I’ve put in a nightie, spare change of clothes, toiletries, phone charger, pads, and a few other bits. Still needs adding to. Thought if anything does happen I would need a bag of basics Atleast, but baby wouldn’t necessarily need any milk / nappies yet. I have a list of what I need to add in. But as my family friends would need to pack it if Emergancy, they wouldn’t know where anything is.

@Mc3209 hope the birthing ball helps.

@Monkeyseesmonkeydoesnt love the excel spreadsheet! I have one too, with colours 😂

@SamK93 I m trying to be prepared for the possibility of DH not being able to leave much if at all, we re very close to the hospital and there are places he can get food nearby but I don't know how comfortable they will be with him popping in and out with covid so thought it d be better to chuck a lot of snacks in the bag. It's silly for hospital food not to be prepared for people with coealic to have something to eat.
I m not certain the midwife unit let's people use plugs so I m going to try and get decent power packs from somewhere.

@GhostWorld I ve started washing the clothes, I figured they should be fine staying in the drawers before then, my joints are getting gradually worse so don't seem myself being comfortable doing the washing close to due date.

Sls668 · 06/08/2020 13:51

You’re all making me panic now as I hadn’t even given a hospital bag any thought at all! I better get on it!!

DressingGown87 · 06/08/2020 13:54

On another note, Grobags? What tog are people getting and how many? Didn’t know whether to get a set one at 1tog and another at 2.5tog?

OP posts:
FirstSurprise001 · 06/08/2020 14:03

@DressingGown87 I’m going with 1.5 tog and then layering underneath. They say a crying baby can tell you if they’re too cold but not too hot? (Or something like that? 😂)

Reading your posts on the hospital bags has made me put together a list today and start buying. If anyone’s interested boots have 20% off the ‘spritz for bits’ and ‘peri prep your bits’ when bought together at the moment!

GhostWorld · 06/08/2020 14:09

@SamK93 @1990shopefulftm I think I will wait until next week when the weather is meant to be good and do a load then so I can hang it up outside.

@DressingGown87 I've got a 2.5 tog sleeping bag, but I think I'll get a 1tog or 2 just because our house is quite warm in general

DressingGown87 · 06/08/2020 14:44

@FirstSurprise001 that sounds reasonable. My initial thought would be to get 2 2.5tog with winter approaching. But I will stick to a lighter tog and a 2.5 just Incase. I must be tired today or craving nandos as I read that initially as peri peri Your bits, which would be interesting!

@GhostWorld I’m going to order a lighter one too, I always think my house is cold, but I rarely have the heating on because I’m usually never home much.

Ladies we need thread 5 😳

SJR86 · 06/08/2020 15:02

@Sls668 I've not thought about mine either...I'm nearly 30 weeks!
Need to get started on it this weekend I think 😂

1990shopefulftm · 06/08/2020 15:38

@DressingGown87 I've got 3 1 tog ones and 3 2.5 tog ones that were nearly new off ebay and I've got some blankets just in case.
Our house can get quite warm sometimes, we've put the groegg on a few times and had no idea till then it was that bad.

WaveStreet · 06/08/2020 15:47

28 weeks today 🥳 hello 3rd trimester!

Have thought about starting my bag but have done nothing about it as of yet, I don't want to stress about leaving it so I will start over the next few weeks.

I've bought 2 x 2.5tog sleeping bags as we like our room cool at night so he might need them. Not sure whether to bother with a grosnug type for newborn if he's too small for sleeping bags, or just swaddle with a normal blanket?

BS9790 · 06/08/2020 17:09

I've bought swaddles to start with and then bought 2.5 tog sleeping bags. We have our thermostat set to 16 overnight, so based on this and thinking it's winter so it's not likely to be above that, I went for 2.5 tog based on the temperature guide. Will just dress in a vest underneath if it's a milder winter etc x

I've started gathering bits for hospital, both for myself and baby. Not sure what I'll need though, as currently still no visitors allowed on our post natal ward, so thinking I'd need to pack enough to cover a few days incase this doesn't change and I need to stay in!

I don't even have a bag... Are people using a mini suitcase? Holdall? Thinking something on wheels as it will be hard to carry both mine & babies bags on my own if restrictions are still in place!

WaveStreet · 06/08/2020 17:26

@BS9790 i was planning on a cabin suitcase for me and changing bag for baby. DH will have his own backpack. I was thinking the same as you about packing for a few days so just a few lightweight pjs/leggings/tops as everyone says how hot it is on the ward.
