I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Thanks Lemon, thought I'd missed something! Feels like ages since I saw my midwife, seems like I've seen every other HCP except her!
Here is some info on mat pay and redundancy, it says if you're given notice after your qualifying week (15 weeks before your due date) you get SMP and redundancy pay www.maternityaction.org.uk/advice-2/mums-dads-scenarios/pregnant/redundancy-during-pregnancy-and-maternity-leave/
I'm not at risk but always worried about redundancy as certain bits of my job are related to government policies so it's at the back of my mind.

NonStopDisco · 13/06/2017 20:03

Ooh pippa, that's a good one, I find resting my feet on a 16 pack of loo roll and leaning forward a bit helps when things work themselves out

Lemondrop99 · 13/06/2017 20:11

Thanks Disco. This week is my qualifying week so I'll get SMP. What I don't know yet is if they'll pay my contractual maternity pay (which is significantly more generous) as they are not obliged to pay this once a contract has ended. I think I probably will get it though, from what HR said. Then it's just whether or not I have a job to go back to.

Lemondrop99 · 13/06/2017 20:15

Can't it sounds like you might have my problem. My bowels stopped pushing. Therefore all the softeners in the world (lactulose, fruit juice, prunes etc) wouldn't make any difference. What you need is a stimulant laxitive. It's a shame the Movicol hasn't helped. I really think you need to talk to your GP about trying a different stimulant laxative and maybe a suppository.

You do have my sympathy as ondansetron constipation is horrendous. It's a horrible choice to make, pills or poo, and at times I felt the constipation was worse than the sickness! But I couldn't give up the ondansetron which is why I ended up in desperate measures with latex gloves to manage the situation.

Whatever you do, try and address this soon. You don't want to get impacted and end up in hospital like poor old Holly. Please talk to your GP

Mustang27 · 13/06/2017 20:36

Cant it took me two days of no ondansetron and sorry about the tmi but I actually felt I shed my body weight 😷. I had to go back on them as I was puking loads again so iv just decided that maybe il take them for a few days then just take a break and accept the shit days sickness wise to achieve well a shit day HmmBlush lol. Who ever said it was like it stop their intestines actually pushing that's pretty much how I felt like everything had grinder to a complete halt.

Lemon a dog cake?? You are soft. Are you worrying less about your dog? Sorry I remember your thread as it struck a chord with me as my border collie has behavioural issues due to previous abuse.

Flap I am so happy! I got my first scan yesterday I didn't want to say anything as i didn't want to share it if things weren't going well for you. I'm sorry they took so long to get you good news but totally worth the wait. So my due date has changed to 24th of December. Which only makes me 12+4 instead of 13+4 I'm gutted lol. I think it might be another wee boy.

flossyfloss · 13/06/2017 20:54

Lucinda - not it hasn't really increased acid but I find that taking the metochlopramide speeds my digestion up so that might be helping with that? Anyway it sounds as though the problem might be as said earlier in another post and more related to intestines getting things moving where as my issue was actually moving things from my bottom to the toilet ConfusedGrin

I'm still going to pack my suppositories in my suitcase in case they're needed while we're away!

cantdothisagain2017 · 13/06/2017 21:11

Are the suppositories the glycerin ones? Are they prescription only ?
I'm nearly 8 weeks so not sure if they are suitable if they are I'll try them as just don't want to have to stop ondansetron

flossyfloss · 13/06/2017 22:12

Hi can't yes they are glycerin and I've been using them since about 7 weeks - they're safe in pregnancy. They help me because my problem is that my bowls are working to move everything to where it should be but then it gets stuck Blush so they help get it out.

You can order them online without a prescription

cantdothisagain2017 · 13/06/2017 22:35

Thanks so much I was googling but wasn't sure if it was ok or not. I'll order some. I feel like I'm just full and as if I can't push or strain because is like the muscles won't work so think I need to attack the problem from both ends !!!

Thingymaboob · 13/06/2017 22:53

It's like passing a tennis ball 🎾

Lemondrop99 · 13/06/2017 23:10

Mustang I know what you mean about passing your own body weight. It's awful. Feeld like you're birthing something in a trial run for labour 🙈 sticking with ondansetron was the right decision for me, but it is a relief to have my bowels working again now I've cut down. God, we have the best conversations on here Hmm

Yeah, it was a pilchard cake 🤢 It's tradition, we take a photo of him with his cake and a party hat every year. He's eight this year! We blew up a load of balloons for him to pop as well, because he loves that. I'm still worried about how it'll work out with him around a baby, but I've spoken to a dog trainer and our vet who both know him quite well, and they were quite positive about it all. So I'm going to buy a load of babygate and (very carefully) see how things go. Hoping he might surprise me as he's a total softy with us.

Lemondrop99 · 13/06/2017 23:14

Can't don't strain! I know that's easier said than done when you're desperate to go, but I can tell you from experience that it won't help, you'll just risk giving yourself painful piles. I nearly did that, it's all only just calming down now. Hope the suppositories work for you

FlapAttack88 · 13/06/2017 23:22

Ah @mustang27 sooooo exciting about your first scan! So glad it went well and you got to see them! Suxh a lovely moment.

Another boy! !! Love them. . What has given you that feeling.. gut feeling or nubs?!

So so upsetting about losing a week though haha...Having hg that is not the direction you want due date predictions to go!!

Amazing due date though. .. Christmas bab!!

So sorry for rudely ignoring everyone else .. great tip abput the toilet rolls /footstools! Just for general too they say haha! Hope you all hve a good evening and I will catch up with thread properly soon xx

flossyfloss · 14/06/2017 08:30

Day 3 of feeling ok in the morning and I've been able to get ready and leave the house?! Please please please let this be placenta starting to take over. I can't say the same for the period between 2pm-bedtime as that is almost worse Sad but I'll take the few hours in the morning where I finally have relief!

Even a double dose of ondansetron didn't help last night Sad

OnNaturesCourse · 14/06/2017 09:04

My work have actually been quite kind. So long as my notice period ends during or after my qualifying week they are giving me my full occupational maternity and SMP. The only thing that is upsetting is the £2000+ of tax and national insurance and student loan repayment that will be hacked off it before I get it. Thankfully redundancy is tax free so I'll get that as a separate lump sum, but my mat is coming in with my last wages.

Although I'm not looking forward to job hunting after baby, I am looking forward to getting out of my current occupation. Definitely time for a change, been made redundant twice in a year now (found redeployment the first time)

Lemondrop99 · 14/06/2017 09:28

Ah bugger! Do you know if student loan repayments are taken out of a redundancy payment? I tried to google this but it was really unclear. I'm a bit worried they can Sad

I'm hoping to stay employed long enough that I won't have to get my maternity in a lump sum (I'm assuming they only do that for redundancy and not normally?! Argh, you've got me questioning it now!). That dedication is really frustrating but good news you'll get your contractual pay too.

I know what you mean about now wanting to job hunt on maternity leave. That's why (even though I'm sick of my place), I'd suck it up and go back short term if I do get job matched because of sake of ease. I know the work, I have flexibility to do it from home and I know I could reduce hours if I choose to.

But equally if they want to pay me to go, I'll welcome a change as our place has been destroyed by new management over the last few years.

What timing though, eh?!

Lemondrop99 · 14/06/2017 09:30

*deduction not dedication!

LucindaE · 14/06/2017 10:23

Much sympathy for all having to 'pass tennis balls'.
Lemondrop Pilchard cake? [You are too kind a dog owner! envy] indeed, I hope you didn't have to make it?
OnNature'sCourse Oh no, about deductions.
flossyfloss Congratulations on a few good hours anyway.

OP posts:
LucindaE · 14/06/2017 10:24

Lemondrop That's meant to be a Envy in our particular sense, not meaning that I covet the pilchard cake!

OP posts:
Lemondrop99 · 14/06/2017 11:35

Yes I made it, it was grim! Always happy to make you one Mother Hen, if you get the craving Grin

You never know, pilchard cake might be the unknown cure for HG! I bet no ones tried it, might be better than ginger? Mwah ha ha.

pippanippa · 14/06/2017 11:59

Lemon how did you manage to make it - ugh pilchards - I don't think I could stomach that!! Glad your scan went well Mustang and that you're getting a few hours respite, if only in the mornings Flossy

Rubbish morning here, but pretty much expected it after leaping out of bed at 11pm last night to run to the toilet to throw up. Think I'm in for a bad couple of days, as even my failsafe ice lolly is being rejected today we'll see. Am building up to taking the delightful antibiotics for UTI, it's one of those powders that you dissolve in water, should be interesting...!

Thingymaboob · 14/06/2017 12:12

Waves to everyone
I have come home from work as cannot stop vomiting. Had a great day yesterday. I work in education at a hospital and there are 4 toilet cubicles and I've been chucking up all morning. Many other HCPs were helpful / kind. I'm 10 weeks today. I feel so depressed!!

pippanippa · 14/06/2017 12:31

Oh sorry to hear that thingymaboob am right there with you today!

Please can someone help me understand ketones as I'm very confused? Having a bad morning so thought I'd best check, and it says 2+. I genuinely don't understand how this is possible! Yes I had a bad morning yesterday and today, but yesterday afternoon I ate pretty normally so thought I made up for it. I have kept water but not food down this morning so am not really dehydrated. I do feel faint, but that's the low blood pressure talking. I just don't understand, I've had really awful spells where I've not kept any food down for a couple of days and ketones have always been lower.

Thingymaboob · 14/06/2017 13:36

Ketones are not just a sign of dehydration. People who are on a low carb diet (like Atkins, Cambridge etc) but hydrated (they drink 2-3 litres of water a day) will show ketones too as they are burning fat reserves. They are in ketosis. +2 is a level where I would be ringing GP / midwife. Are you on medication?

Hollyhop17 · 14/06/2017 14:46

Hi everyone, glad your scan went well Mustang.

I have a date, July 6!! I have 22 days left. Sadly, I'm the only one due in July so I wont move up the list! I had to leave work at 11 today as I was throwing up all morning. They made me feel bad about it as well. Oh well, tomorrow is my last day so whatever.

I had a chat with our finance dept today. My contract runs out in September so I am being paid all my mat pay in one go. Bit anmoying as I will pay loads of tax, but been told to fill in a P50 which will give me the tax back. I am so happy not to be going back but bit worried about finding a job next year... I guess thats 2018s problem!

Sorry to those suffering with constipation. I found repeared suppositories eventually helped me. For the love of god, get ahead of it and dont leave it too long. You dont want to end up in hospital with it...

Waves to all. Those having a rubbish day like me and those who are feeling a bit better.
