After the inital shock of finding out I am pregnant again, I have started bleeding today. Phoned the emergancy gp and of course he said that it could be a miscarriage, so he tried to get me an appointment at the EPU but noone is there, so I have to phone my gp tomorrow.. I have a very slight pain on my right hand side, and the bleeding is light. I asked about ectopic pregnancy and he said I would be in serevre pain, which I am not.

Dont worry TOO much about ectopic rupture.

Although symptoms do vary if your tube was going to rupture you would have significant pain, shoulder tip pain, feeling very unwell, dizzy, faint, dark brown aor heavy bleeding.

Now dont get me wrong, Im not being trivial just giving you some peace of mind until you can get back in.

The good thing is your in the system early. Tube rupture and rupture often happens further into the pregnancy when people are unaware there can be any problems.

I was grateful for my early bleeding as at least I was being monitored before things got to a life threatening stage.

I presented to EPAC when they didnt even know how far gone I was and looking back I was only about 4 weeks yet they still scanned me. So I think that pushing for a scan asap is a good idea.

After my treatment I wouldnt feel bad about presenting with serious pain even if I had to exagerate how bad it was - at the end of the day their laid back attitude towards you isnt goign to help you stop worrying is it?

I would imagine the blood they took was to monitor the amount of HCG hormone. When mine was tested the results were normally available later that day or early the next. They should monitor how it rises in 48 hour increments. In healthy pregnancie the HCG doubles (or thereabouts). In miscarriage the levels may climb then start to drop or in Ectopic they tend to carry on growing but creep up rather than double.

It is a combination of HCG levels and internal scans that can give them an insight into what is happening at this stage. In conjunction with your symptoms.

well haven't been told to come back for a repeat blood test. Suppose they will do one on monday. At least I know that if it gets really bad just to get the A&E, where they are now aware that I have been having pain.

In the case of ectopic, the epu won't be concerned about how far you are as the lump will show in your tube, not your uterus, they won't even really worry abuot looking there. I hope you get a result SKC

SparklyGothKat · 04/01/2007 12:15

the painkillers haven;t kicked in yet, feels like I have been thumped in the side.

I going to have a nap now, still feeling drained and tired all the time, boobs still achey so fingers crossed it is just pregnancy pain or a cyst like I had with Dd1

fingers crossed that it is just a cyst, of course... and that's still very likely, don't forget.

SKG, where are you in the country? Your docs do seem to be being a bit shite, tbh.

If the blood from today was for an HCG test then they should have asked you to come back on Saturday and again on Monday as it's really pretty essential that the bloods are monitored serially every 48 hours. In an ongoing pregnancy you'd hope that they'd be increasing by at least 66% every 48 hours (although as i have mentioned before, i've had an ep where it doubled beautifully and a successful pregnancy where they went up by 3% so god knows really).

the only sure-fire way to find out if this pregnancy is in the uterus is to do a vaginal scan.

Can I tell you the only thing that worries me? You reckon that you are nearly 6 weeks, but didn't i see you say before that you may have got pregnant the month before... if there is any chance that you have got your dates wrong that does change things rather dramatically... it would mean that the MAP wouldn't be implicated so it makes the chances of an ep lower, but on the off-chance that it is an ep makes things worse, iykwim?

if i was you i'd phone the EPU again, tell them where you're up to, tell them that you aren't 100% on your dates, tell them that you've looked up the EPT website and that you would describe your bleeding as prune-juice like (classic symptom, although i always had bright red blood so again it's all bollocks). And you really need to find out if that blood was sent off to the labs, and why you haven't been asked back in 48hours.

sorry to put all this onto you, SKG, but you can't be too careful. and a scan on Monday... i think that's too long to wait. if they have a trans-vaginal scanner then you don't have to wait that long.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 04/01/2007 13:13

I would ring and say "hi im ringing to find out my blood results from earlier" and take it from there.

If they give you them say ok thanks, when do I need to come in for the next set? Im concerned about ectopic because of X,Y and Z and feel strongly I want it ruled out as early as possible.

AitchTwoOhOhSeven · 04/01/2007 13:25

good idea, pecka.

littleducks · 04/01/2007 15:29

i'm also shocked at the level of care you are receiving, i'm surprised that if your local a and e doesnt have the correct ultrasound machine for early pregnancy that they couldnt send you up to gynae ward or wheel it down.

Its probably too late now but i would put your concerns/symptons in a letter either to EPU or GP as when faced with chance of being sued hosp actually get round to treating patients properly. I did my work experience at gynae ward EPU at hosp and you would have been added to emergency list and fitted in somehow.

SparklyGothKat · 04/01/2007 15:45

I'm in herts. The hospital care I have recieved is shocking. The painkilers didn;t work and I am still in pain, its a contant pain now. I never thought I would be in this situation and am shocked that they are all so blase about it tbh.

And they do have a vaginal scanner at the hospital as I had one when I misscarriaged before.

SparklyGothKat · 04/01/2007 15:49

I did wonder about my dates as I can't get into some of my trousers now, and I only wore them a few weeks back but have a gap of about 2 inches between button and hole now.

monalissie · 04/01/2007 15:53

SGK, thats awful!!! im so shocked. i was 5w when i had my 1st scan. but coz i was bleeding i told them i was 8w. it was vaginal but we saw ds's sac. i still have the pic. with my 2nd mc i was 6w and i had another vs which again i insisted on. you have to really kick up a fuss. how dare they mess with peoples lives like this. they're fucking doctors not deitys

SparklyGothKat · 04/01/2007 15:56

I know. I am going to see if my mum will take me to the A&E in stevenage

OP posts:
monalissie · 04/01/2007 15:58

please do and make sure you mention medical negligence. its amazing how obliging they can be when threatened with legal action.

SparklyGothKat · 04/01/2007 15:59

mum is on her way over.

littleducks · 04/01/2007 16:05

Yes go, say you are following your gps advice (pain worse = a and e) see if you can get hcg level from original hosp so if it repeated at new hosp you will no if it is rising or not. Good luck, fingers crossed for you.

monalissie · 04/01/2007 16:07

good. will check in later to see how you are. hows the pain now?

bubblebell1 · 04/01/2007 16:18

sparkly do u wish to name and shame the hospital you are refering to.

im in herts too and have experienced probs with the hospital i am attending.

could also tell you if they do actually scan before 6 weeks.

hope your ok tho
xxx

misdee · 04/01/2007 16:19

wgc hospital

misdee · 04/01/2007 16:21

bubblebell same hospital.

i had my dd1 there and hated it (almost 7 years ago) i refused to go back there for dd2+3 births and had them at the lister instead.

misdee · 04/01/2007 16:26

i'm sparklys sister btw.

bubblebell1 · 04/01/2007 16:27

oh god it is the same hospital.

they are appalling and if it is worth much they did scan me in a & e with a scanner attached to a lap top. i was 5 +2

i am now 35 weeks and have had no end of problems with them, and as i have posted many times i even lost my youngst sister there due to an error on their part 4 days after the birth.

there is a particular midwife on the epu that gives pit bull terriers a good name and i just hope that sparkly gets the support she needs even if she has to travel miles to get it.

misdee · 04/01/2007 16:29

where will you give birth? honestly lister is so much better, if you can get there then transfer your care now. I did with dd3 at about 34 weeks. i was induced at 38weeks and they were brilliant.

bubblebell1 · 04/01/2007 16:31

i am considering it. altho i am also considering goin to stay with in laws nearer the birth as their hosp is so much nicer. am supposed to be having a cs tho just have to wait til next week to arrange it.
