Potty training support for a four-year-old starting school in September

Hi all,

DD is 4 and is showing no signs of being ready to train yet which is concerning me as she’s due to be starting school in September. We’ve had a few failed attempts in the past, and she just doesn’t seem to be getting the hang of knowing when she needs to go. The doctors and HV have been supportive and keep giving me all these different tactics to try but to no avail and since I’ve recently had another baby we’ve resorted back to nappies again.

Please don’t come for me, I know she’s late to be trained! Just looking for some support, tips, and to know I’m not the only one still having to change a 4 year old x

How have the first few days gone? It’s hard work but it’ll pay off.

I think what you’ve done and I see many parents do this, is see nursery/pre-school as just childcare when it’s about so much more than that - independent skills, social skills as well as learning academically. I see children arrive to the nursery at my school who are behind the other children in some areas as they’ve never attended a setting before. There’s definitely lots of positives about staying at home with their parents/grandparents but nursery has its place as well.

She’s had a really good couple of days thanks. School have been super supportive changing her when needed. No wees on the toilet but they said they’ll encourage her to go once she’s more settled. As the weathers a bit cooler here now I put tights in under her dress so hopefully it wasn’t too obvious to her classmates she had a pull up on

and yes I know what you mean about nursery. We wanted her to have maximum time with us and the family but I definitely see its advantages now. Will be sure to send my youngest when he gets a bit older!
