Hi all

My ds is 3.1 and has been interested in training for ages. We’ve had a few attempts but not very successfully.

Tried again today - bottoms off and naked from waist down then drink, then after twenty minutes prompted!

He popped on potty and did tiny wee. Huge applause from all then we went down loo, hands washed, chocolate button awarded.

Then five minutes later huge wee all over floor.

Is this normal? Without prompting he seems to have no sense of needing to go - but he’s getting old for potty training.

Any ideas - just persevere?

Thank you - that’s a very good point and very reassuring Smile

I should have said I’m not expecting him to actually wipe, more to explain wiping always follows poo! And giving him a chance to try.

He wanted to wear pants at home this afternoon - his new character ones so I let him and he didn’t have any accidents at all bless him.

Second day in pants and no accidents at all. I’m going to drop him out of night nappies tonight so he has the weekend to get used to that. He isn’t going in the nappy anyway so it may as well come off. I’m going to put a waterproof sheet on though - fingers crossed!!

He's doing wonderfully. As are you, of course. I'm a cheapskate and used a cheapo shower curtain from Asda underneath the bottom sheet. I also always had a spare bottom sheet around if a small hours bed change was needed.
Waterproof sheet thing is massively, handy though. Whatever makes your life easier.

Onceuponatimethen · 23/03/2018 18:21

Thank you

Really like the shower curtain idea!!

Tomorrow it will be three weeks since day one and I started this thread! Can’t believe he’s largely day dry and going to try night dry next Smile

I bet it felt longer than three weeks.
Well done.
Was discussing this with dh today. He said "Oh my God. It felt like it went on forEVER."
Be proud of how far you have come.

Happy 3 week potty training anniversary! Grin So pleased everything is going so well. Your DS has been a star!

Onceuponatimethen · 24/03/2018 10:37

Thanks so much to both of you!

Yes I’m beyond impressed with ds - he was amazing!!

Last night was our first night ditching the night nappy and he stayed dry. I have a spare pair of pjs and some more waterproof bed mats handy for if it goes pear shaped but fingers crossed!!

I’m so grateful for the support - I had had such a nightmare the previous two times I tried but I wonder if I gave up too soon. I think starting the thread really gave me the confidence to carry on Smile

In the last two weeks he has only had one wee accident, now in pants and I’m phasing out potty today in favour of the big toilet seat!! No poo accidents for ten days.

Big toilet seat with child inset I mean!! He wanted to try perching on an adult seat at a supermarket yesterday so I let him and with a lot of help to hold him on he managed.

Great to hear. Don't beat yourself up over accidents and what feel like set backs. Sounds like you are in the right track. Hope you have access to a comforter of choice for yourself wine/chocolate/cake/broccoli Grin- whatever works for you!

Onceuponatimethen · 24/03/2018 19:34

Thank you - I have been having lots of chocolate!! I know people say not to give them rewards but he forgot about the chocolate buttons very quickly and I’ve eaten the rest Grin

Good on you!

Second night with no nappies and dry again - so far so good!!

Well done!
I'm starting on Friday with my 2.5 yr old ds. This thread has given me hope that it'll all be ok. Smile

Onceuponatimethen · 25/03/2018 21:53

Tiger , good luck Smile

I’m glad the thread has been encouraging. I honestly think if I’d started it on one of the previous attempts I would maybe have been successful quicker

Also really recommend the oh crap book!!

Downloaded on the kindle and already started reading!

Onceuponatimethen · 25/03/2018 23:05

Sounds great! Have you tried before or is this first try?

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 26/03/2018 08:05

3rd night with no night nappy on and dry the whole time!! Pleased!

He’s now using the insert seat all the time and hasn’t asked for the potty in the last few days.

OP posts:
gussyfinknottle · 26/03/2018 08:14

Just wonderful!
I hope nobody reading this thread falls for the myth that it all happens at [insert whichever age] quickly and without setbacks. It can but generally doesn't. It REALLY doesn't.

Onceuponatimethen · 26/03/2018 08:23

I completely agree Gussy - was different with my oldest as all outdoors so no mess at all but they were still having accidents about 6 months later. Also they didn’t night train until about 3 it 4 months after being dry in the day.

I’m sure ds is going to have a blip at some point! Would be completely normal.

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 26/03/2018 08:25

when I say all outdoors it was a very hot June / July / aug so we did nappy off, paddling pool, sand and outdoor play every day and so there were loads of accidents but all happened outside. Which is good when you’ve bought a house full of cream carpets!
