Hi all

My ds is 3.1 and has been interested in training for ages. We’ve had a few attempts but not very successfully.

Tried again today - bottoms off and naked from waist down then drink, then after twenty minutes prompted!

He popped on potty and did tiny wee. Huge applause from all then we went down loo, hands washed, chocolate button awarded.

Then five minutes later huge wee all over floor.

Is this normal? Without prompting he seems to have no sense of needing to go - but he’s getting old for potty training.

Any ideas - just persevere?

I would say he sounds confused - does she trust me not to wee or does she not? Am I weeing in my nappy/trousers or am I not?

I appreciate its not easy when you've got other kids and things to do but if you're not able to give him a good few days with no nappy other than sleep times, I'd leave it until you have got time.

If he's asking to not wear a nappy and use the potty, then you might need to decide if this is the time to stop nappies. But on and off sounds like it has confused things.

GlitterBurps · 04/03/2018 11:14

Just remembered a tip from my friend. Put them in pants with the nappy over the top, so if they have an accident you have less clean up and clothes changes

Onceuponatimethen · 04/03/2018 14:04

Thanks all!

Tea, because that’s what it says to do in potty training for boys - just to have sessions a few hours long and then the nappy can g back on I didn’t think it was a huge problem. Fingers crossed I haven’t messed everything up Confused

He just asked to have his nappy off saying he wanted to do a wee but nothing came out and now we have to go out again to another sport thing for older dc - just so hard to make time. Maybe I should have said no when he asked to try the potty yesterday but at least he’s asking.

Just take a potty with you? Potty before you leave the house potty when you get there. Potty before you leave. Etc

He wants to do this. But you nedscto support him

teaandbiscuitsforme · 04/03/2018 14:14

You won't have messed anything up! Flowers

I would say if he's asking, and you can do it, go for it without nappies. It's not going to be perfect in a couple of hours (that book seems to be putting huge pressure on you IMO!) but he's showing you so many signs that he's ready.

Lots of BrewCake** and Wine and go for it??

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 04/03/2018 15:31

Nappy over the top of pants is a bad idea IMO. It's almost telling them its OK to wee in pants

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 04/03/2018 15:32

I really would just go cold turkey with the nappies (other than bedtime) he clearly wants to do it. Put puppy pads down on his carseat and take spare clothes out with you. Also a little potty in the car is a good idea

Onceuponatimethen · 05/03/2018 19:22

I think you guys were right - suddenly tonight seems to have clicked. He asked to take nappy off when we got hold from school run and did all three wees and one poo all in potty with no accident. He’s just going to sleep now so put Night nappy pants back on.

I reminded him a lot but one wee he did himself by saying ‘I need the potty’ and then running to it and doing it.

Can’t believe it - so hoping this means he’s going to get it.

And oh crap arrived so I’m going to read it tonight.

So so helpful to have all your advice - thank you Flowers

I’m at home this weekend so will see where we are at end of weekend and then talk to preschool if he’s still mostly got it!

Excellent progress OP!

Onceuponatimethen · 06/03/2018 07:02

Thank you tea !

I read lost if oh crap last night and you guys were right - it is really good.

Most of it I meant there -liked the way it actually tells you how to do it in detail. The potty training boys is good but quite vague on how it will work.

Going to keep going and see where we end up Smile

Glad you've found it helpful! I'm sure some people think we're over the top or recommending it so much but I honestly don't know what I would've done without a plan. People also assume it's going to be one of those put them on the potty every 15mins books!

Anyway, I'm sure there'll be a few more hiccups but it sounds as if your DS is doing really well. I'm sure all of this will be a distant memory very soon!

Onceuponatimethen · 08/03/2018 08:57

Right now having nappy off time after preschool and until bedtime every day and now all wees and poos going in potty with no accidents- would you believe!

So today I have a day off and I’m doing no nappies all day and moving on from nappy off and bare bottom to nappy on and trackers on bottom half so he learns to run and push those down. If he can do that today and tomorrow then we will do the whole weekend without nappies and then tell preschool on Monday

Fingers crossed!!!!

And thanks again everyone I really nearly dispaired at the start as I’ve tried twice before to train him and he just couldn’t get the hang of when wee was coming so there was wee everywhere Shock

Well done! I was on then off with my DS. Then once I was confident and stuck to it he got it straight away. Keep going! You've cracked it!!

Onceuponatimethen · 08/03/2018 12:30

Having a really mixed day today - think he is tired from preschool for the first half of the week and now he’s done an accident as soon as the tracksuit bottoms came on! Persevering to see how it goes and if I can get him to pop on the potty.

He seems to struggle to get on the potty with his tracksuit bottoms round his ankles - should I be encouraging him to take them off completely?

Onceuponatimethen · 08/03/2018 12:31

I wish I was summer and we could just do all this in the garden Confused

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 08/03/2018 12:52

Ok progress - he is still in (second pair of) trackers and he’s done the tiniest wee ever on the pot so I’ve made a huge fuss of him and given him a choccie

Really hope it improves from here on because I had thought today was going to be easier after he’d done so well the last 3 days Hmm

I know I’m talking to myself but finding it cathartic (!!)

Rainatnight · 08/03/2018 13:00

Well done, OP! Might be a bit one step forward two steps back but accidents are totally normal

Onceuponatimethen · 08/03/2018 13:04

Thank you Rain! I know you are right - important to remember accidents are completely normal and even if it feels like a disaster at times it really is ok

teaandbiscuitsforme · 08/03/2018 13:04

It honestly sounds like you're making great progress. Second pair of trousers by lunchtime is not a bad day!

Keep going!
