Hi all

My ds is 3.1 and has been interested in training for ages. We’ve had a few attempts but not very successfully.

Tried again today - bottoms off and naked from waist down then drink, then after twenty minutes prompted!

He popped on potty and did tiny wee. Huge applause from all then we went down loo, hands washed, chocolate button awarded.

Then five minutes later huge wee all over floor.

Is this normal? Without prompting he seems to have no sense of needing to go - but he’s getting old for potty training.

Any ideas - just persevere?

He's making good progress by the sounds of it. Don't know if anyone else has said it but it's very cold to be dealing with issues about your poo and wee. Best of luck and be kind to yourself.

You could try pants but maybe be flexible? I found if my DD had an accident or a little dribble, I didn't put a new pair on initially just as a kind of reset.

Also, don't draw attention to them. Just put them on as he's getting dressed rather than making a big deal about them. Low key so he doesn't notice!

Glad it's still going well. Hope the poo accidents sort themselves out soon!

I hope so!! Might try him with the pants over the weekend and see what happens

So I think it’s safe to say ds has got the wees off pat - now gone a week with only one wee accident. He’s been in (jogger) trousers all week and no pants.

His last poo accident was on Wednesday but I have doing a lot of reminding about poos and we have always been pretty close to a potty, even if our and about (toddler groups where they have them), so I think the real test on the poos front will only be when he goes to preschool again on Monday.

But generally very happy with how it’s going.

Forgot to say he’s now saying ‘I need the potty’as soon as he wakes up in the morning which is new and that his nappies Overnight always seem to be dry but probably too early to add night training as well?!!

CaptainKirkssparetupee · 17/03/2018 10:13

If he is holding over night then he is night trained

teaandbiscuitsforme · 17/03/2018 10:51

Agree with captain - if he's dry, he's trained! I'd probably leave it at least a week so you're confident that every morning nappy is dry but otherwise, congrats!

My DD was dry overnight very soon after day training. I left her in nappies for about a month to be sure but really I could have stopped after a week or so.

Onceuponatimethen · 17/03/2018 15:22

True! Hadn’t thought about it like that!! That’s a good thought that he actually in effect is dry! I will check i have a waterproof mattress cover on and consider dropping nappies over the Easter hols!!

Onceuponatimethen · 17/03/2018 15:23

And keep checking to see if night nappies are always dry. Would be very nice to have youngest dc night trained too

Meant to say as well he tried a child seat on adult loo at toddler group on Thursday! He is asking to try at home too so will get it out of loft now

We didn’t get toilet seat insert thing out yet but will do that tomorrow

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 18/03/2018 20:02

And over Easter school holiday I will try without night nappies as well and move him onto toilet rather than potty

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 18/03/2018 20:03

He can’t wipe his bottom though! Any tips anyone?

OP posts:
CaptainKirkssparetupee · 18/03/2018 20:16

Are his hands actually long enough to reach?

Onceuponatimethen · 18/03/2018 20:59

I’m not sure they are! I’m saying at the mo to let me know and I will wipe. But presume preschool won’t Confused

Things seem to be going well now and poos seem sorted - a whole week of no poo accidents now!

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 21/03/2018 21:52

I definitely think he’s dry at night as well so over the Easter holidays we will drop the night nappies. His nappy is dry every night but he seems to be waking a lot more in the night. I wonder if he needs a wee, thinks he shouldn’t do it in his nappy and then can’t go back to sleep fully because his bladder is full.

But when I ask him if he wants to do a wee at night he says no he doesn’t need one and just ask for lots of drinks which I can imagine is making things worth. I wonder if I should gently carry to the potty and put him on?

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 21/03/2018 21:52

Worse not worth!

OP posts:
Onceuponatimethen · 21/03/2018 21:56

So plan over Easter then - just for me to get my own thinking straight is:

  • put him into pants at home for a day or so for him to get used to pulling them down
  • pants every day at home and out and about
  • move on to using toilet with insert seat not potty
  • drop night nappies
  • teach him to try to wipe his bottom (may not actually be possible but just to have a go!)

I personally didn't make wiping their own bottom successfully a "red line" to measure success or failure overall. He'll get there. He'll hopefully relish the independence and grown up-ness of it. Don't stress over hiccups or "just not getting it yet".
My dd was, frankly, a complete nightmare. I found best progress by taking the above approach. She is now Y6 and did a really cool ponytail for herself this morning following a tutorial on YouTube. What I mean is, if we can get there, anyone can. It just feels like the hardest job you've ever had (no pun intended). Good luck.
