Ahem, shall I get off my soap box now

SallyInYorkshire · 03/04/2008 22:57

Hello am having a miserable day, thought i had got the bf sussed but LO still not gaining weight DAMN DAMN DAMN. was so determined to keep going with exclusive bf but now starting to doubt myself. dh still at work as usual - and when he does come home he is always exhasuted and just wants to go to bed.

pobletsmum · 04/04/2008 14:07

Oh Sally sorry to hear lo isn't gaining much weight. Have you had any advice from a HV or anyone? Seems like lots of us are having trouble with our boobs one way and another.

I'm still in a lot of pain. My GP has told me to keep going with the fluconazole for thrush (I have 10 more days left), and prescribed stronger painkillers, but to be honest, I'm thinking that breastmilk laced with thrush medications & painkillers for weeks at a time can't possibly be better than formula????? I'm keeping in mind the longer term outcomes, and I really, really want to keep bf. I will be devastated if I have to stop, but things just aren't getting any better. I think I'll post on the breastfeeding section & see if anyone has any other ideas about what I can do to help myself.

beansprout · 04/04/2008 15:15

Pobletsmum - I'm so sorry this isn't getting any better for you. I hope you can get some answers on the other thread.

We have just popped home as we are making the most of the good weather and have spent most of the day at the park!

Great thing about dh's job is that he can't moan that the house is a tip as I have spent the day with the kids in the park!!

SallyInYorkshire · 04/04/2008 15:19

poblets sorry to hear you are in so much pain.
HV says DS looks healthy so keep going for the moment, tho i could go to mix feeding if i want (but i am scared this will hurt my supply and be the beginning of the end of bf).

Egg · 04/04/2008 16:41

Hi Sally and Poblet and anyone else feeling a bit shite. Sally I imagine everything is made worse if DH gets home so late so often. My DH is home about 7:30 three nights a week and 6:30 the other two, and I always feel so much more positive on the earlier nights, even though 7:30 is not bad compared to some. Just means he is home and can bath DS1 and get him ready for bed while I see to the DTs.

Fingers crossed for you that you can continue to bf, do you know how much LO weighs now, compared to birth? Are scales def correct etc?

Too cheer you up, DS1 just smeared poo round the sitting room . Not really intentionally but still horrendous. He was trying for a poo, got a bit out, put his hand in his nappy and voila. I didn't see it in time. He has had an early bath and is now doing acrobatics on the sofa.

Beany we too spent a couple of hours at the park earlier (not all day tho). Was the first time the babies have ever been fed anywhere but at home (apart from hospital). Was only doable as my doula was here today, otherwise can't keep an eye on DS1 and be able to stop him jumping from the top of slide / leaving play area etc whilst feeding babies.

Slacker · 04/04/2008 16:54

Poblets - no personal experience but from years of lurking at misc.kids.breastfeeding (before usenet disappeared under a pile of spam) I know the most effective treatment is apparently gentian violet - you paint it on your nipples and it actually works. There's stuff at Kellymom about it - Dr Jack Newman is a real expert so look at his site.

Breastmilk with traces of painkillers/thrush treatment is still better for your baby than formula milk so don't be too concerned about that, Thomas Hale is the expert on which meds are incompatible with breastfeeding (remarkably few).

hth

Slacker · 04/04/2008 16:59

Sally - quote from Kellymom: "If supplements are medically indicated, breastmilk is preferred over formula as a supplement (exceptions to this are rare), and the average fat/calorie content of mom's milk is higher than that of formula. Mom can pump for 5-10 minutes after nursing (don't interrupt or shorten the nursing session to do this), and offer this higher-fat hindmilk to baby as needed."

Gill79 · 04/04/2008 18:04

Have a lovey break in Spain Omy and let's do Kenwood when you get back (plus anyone else that can make it)

Poblet and Sally - sorry to hear about continuing trouble with b/f. Have either of you got What to Expect When You're Breastfeeding (and what to do if you can't)? It's a really useful read.

DS just done his first poo since the weekend... so we've both had a pooey day again Egg although luckily most of it was contained within nappy and not spread around room! Luckily I'm coming down with a cold so no sense of smell. Unluckily I feel crp with it.

Happy weekend all.....

SallyInYorkshire · 04/04/2008 19:05

thanks for your nice comments.
dh eventually came back around midnight.i would have had a go at him,but he feels bad enough about it already.

Egg - yes well DS only just got above his birthweight at 6 week weigh-in and the hv scales are def correct alas. there is debate over whether birth weight was accurate but tbh i think it was.

Slacker - thing is, i am already supplementing with ebm and i cant pump v much.

Gill - sorry you feel crap. i do actually have the what to expect book but find kellymom far more useful tbh.

tee hee at all the poo stories

CountTo10 · 04/04/2008 20:02

Hmmmm so maybe the post I tried to put up this morning was what crashed mumsnet as it's not here!!!!!!!

Hope everyone's enjoyed the sunshine, apparantly sposed to be wintery again by the end of the weekend damn it!!!

Sally, my post earlier was mostly directed at you and it was asking what had the hv said etc. It sounds like she's not overly worried. How much weight has she put on so far? Maybe it's just a slow down and then she'll speed up again? Expressing after a feed can also increase your supply so if ou can do it is good if thats the issue.

Poor old ds2 has another cold except this time it's quite bad. He sounded awful when he woke up in the night and he's coughing which sounds so sore. He's been packed off tonight with a tiny bit of calpol, a vapouriser, yellow pages under his cot and nasal drops!!! Hopefully its shortlived. Honestly, never had this with ds1 who was formula fed!!! I tell you - god knows what immunities I'm passing to ds2 at present but its not the common cold!!!!

rozzyraspberry · 04/04/2008 20:24

Countto10 - I think 2nd and subsequent babies do tend to get more colds etc because they're exposed to more germs from their older siblings.

Sally - I'm glad your hv is being supportive - if she thinks you lo looks healthy then I would carry on as you are for the moment - you're doing great.

Hany in there poblets - you're doing great too. I've read that shooting pains can mean you're drinking too much caffeine - could that be the case?

Glad your lo has poohed Gill! LOL at the poo smears Egg.

It was raining here this morning but was nice this afternoon so got out into the garden for a few hours which was nice. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

omy · 04/04/2008 21:34

Thanks for the reassurance Countto10! LO is feeding so much at the mo - it is good to know it will calm down! She is being a real sweetie though - goes to sleep in her cot no problem as long as she has done all her burps!

Your poor little coldy one - it is so miseerable for them when they are stuffed up!

Rozzy - shooting pains with let-down - YES - I will try to cut out the caffeine - it's just that I LOVE my tea and chocolate!!

Gill - will see you at Kenwood when I get back!

SallyInYorkshire · 04/04/2008 23:01

hi count, well its all in kg sorry but birth weight 4.24kg, lowest weight 3.32kg , regained to 4.14 at 3 weeks and now only 4.26 so only put on 4oz in the last 3 and a half weeks ... Not great.
Initially it may have been a supply issue but I do not think it is now. More an issue of LO not taking enough.
Keep thinking every week thst the weight gain will pick up, and it doesn't.

missnatalie · 05/04/2008 00:04

Can i join please?? I didnt actually join the ante-natal thread as i was too scared, but had a look in everyday to see how everyone was feeling etc.
My little man Henley was born on 11.02.08 weighing in at 6lb 7oz. I have so many questions re feeding, sleeping/not sleeping. Im a first time mum so dont have much experience at all and feel a bit thick to be honest when it comes to my baby. Hope you dont mind me joining

BEAUTlFUL · 05/04/2008 07:15

How I understand that "feeling thick" feeling! You hear so much about the maternal instinct, you feel you ought to know immediately how to put nappies on, which cry means what, whether a rash is meningitis or just needs some Sudacrem, etc etc...

beansprout · 05/04/2008 07:43

missnatalie - welcome to the thread!! Please don't ever think you are thick, we've all been there. I stood in the hospital with ds1 and nearly had to call for help as I just couldn't work out how to put a nappy on him.

Good news - titch was asleep by 8pm last night.
Bad news - he woke up at 4.30am and didn't want to go back to sleep.

beansprout · 05/04/2008 07:44

Oh, and I am up for Kenwood when Omy gets back. Shall we aim for 3 weeks time?

leesmum · 05/04/2008 10:25

missnatalie welcome and congratulations on the arrival of Henley (lovely name)

Well wednesday wasn't too bad after all, the balloons were great if not a bit upsetting, and then we had a lovely lunch out. Mum was on and off all day, me and sis went round to hers later for a glassof wine and we had a laugh remembering some of the things dad did

I'll have to read back to catch up properly, btw DS2 has'nt had a poo since tues

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 05/04/2008 13:30

welcome miss natalie- and congrats on you baby boy!!!

Welcome missnatalie!

Gill79 · 05/04/2008 19:53

Welcome Miss Natalie - well we can all be a bit thick at times. My poor mum had to go home on the train with DS's wee on her trousers today. I bought him a lovely fluffy organic cotton nappy today and I put it on him and gave him to her for a cuddle as his bottom was so lovely and soft and cuddly in it. Never realised you have to put a waterproof liner on top......

DS has got my cold, his throat's a bit crackly with mucus but he seems happy enough. And AMAZING he slept from 11.30 last night till 5 and then until 9. Could live with a routine like that....

W/c 21st at Kenwood? We should probably head back to the Meet-Up thread
