Pl;ace bets here... I reckon 3 years. I think they will try and make a good go of it and it may not be back to the USA after 3 years it may be on somewhere else.
But culture shock for sure, SiL has admitted she had difficulty understanding a the accent of teh person they booked a self drive hire from on teh phone. Those northern accents may be tricky for her as a southerner and are impenetrable at teh mo to her DH.
I suspect teh younger kids ( 6 from 3-10) will assimilate OK, but as they are Home ed ing maybe not so fast as school goers, they will be a little American enclave for a while.

Astrophe · 20/01/2009 09:04

I dunno - but after 3 years I reckon they might be settled. I know when we moved to the UK the first year was "no way", the second "maybe" and third "why are we leaving again?"...so maybe they will stay?

We spent a glorious morning at a wonderful waterplay park - two 'ponds' with a river running between. My friend with a just 3 year old boy joined us and we chatted while the kids played happily. Lovely. By the time we left - 1pm, it was very hot - about 35 I think, so hppy to retreat for lunch bck into the air conditioned house!

Sickness not too bad today! Still feeling bloaty and yucky, but so long as I eat, eat, eat, I seem to be able to stave of the really pukey feeling! Hooray! Wont tell DH and Mum until I know its here to stay though - another week I think!

laundrylover · 20/01/2009 09:22

Morning from the frozen north! The girls have just skated off to school with DP.

Astro - sounds hot down there but the water park sounds fab. Hope DH picks up soon....needs a job eh? You must be past 12 weeks now though? My sis had her scan last week and she's due after you....my friend who has been trying for 5 years for number 2 is about 9 weeks too. She has had two MCs but just a bleed this time.....she has a scan next week but looks really preggers already!! I'm sooooo pleased for her. Her DD is Tilly's best friend and in the same class. I went to school with her and her DH went to school with DP!!!

Uni, I reckon they might like Leeds if they give it a try. Home Eding will mean they take much longer to settle though I think. A meet up at Yorkshire Sculpture Park in the summer methinks...

Friz, have you got snow too? I am the same about horses though I did have my own as a teenager that I saved up for and bought. I think it's something that the girls and I might do together but maybe when K is a bit bigger. Swimming lessons is first on my list - more useful in an emergency than an ability to tame a wild stallion eh?

Holidays...here is our plan. We are going to use our airmiles to fly BA from Heathrow to Athens. My auntie lives near Heathrow so no probs there.Leave a few days before Easter hols as I am down in London for work. T misses 3 days of school. Couple of days in Athens then overnight ferry to Crete. Apartment/studio near Chania for 6/7 nights then a few days near Irakliio (Knossos ruins and Santorini) before ferry back to Athens and fly home.

What do you think? Weather should be pleasant but not hot (20 degrees). Hope pool will be warm enough to swim but may have to find a heated one. Can't wait!!!!

Astro does DH not know yet !!! WOW you are good at keeping quiet. Waterpark sounds nice.
Thers a playground with water features nearish my parents, and another at the sea side about 15 miles from here, both great fun.

Hols- I'm looking vaguely at cottages in north devon, we could go by bike and train. Then maybe a week up north by car as well, see SiL and some old friends and maybe some of you as well. DH has LOADS of leave to take but never seems to find time to take it. His current project may have just got harder too as a key person in the company hes working alongside has died suddenly. I think the project really needs 2x DH but clone technology isn't that good yet.
righto- 20 mins til I have to go and get boy from nurture group. Must get these flyers cut and posted out.

laundrylover · 20/01/2009 12:53

That's sad news about the work colleague Uni.

Astro - have you really not told DH yet??? Missed that one! You must be mad. I'd be lying with my feet up whilst he did all the work and fanned me with a palm leaf!!!!

OP posts:
Astrophe · 21/01/2009 00:25

LOL - DH knows about baby! Crikey - no way I could hide 7 pukes a day! I was saying I wont tell him I'm feeling better yet!!!! Make sure the improvement is here to stay before I release him from palm leaf duties!

Holiday sounds fab LL! Yes, am 14 weeks now, had a scan and 12 and all looks well. Great news about you mate at 9 weeks! Exciting!

Uni, hope you can sort out some holidays too and meet up with the other northern folk! Wish I could come too!

laundrylover · 21/01/2009 23:27

I'm sitting here tittering away at me and Uni misunderstanding your post Astro. It has really amused me the thought of you concealing your pregnancy through all your travels!!! Anyway you are quite right not to let on that you are feeling better.

Our holiday plans are back at square 1. The problem is that on Crete nothing is open and the pools are too cold to swim in. Turkey will be warmer but the waterparks don't open until May which is a shame. Hmmmm. I think these tourists are a bit nesh - we'll be in the sea in Scotland in May for goodness sake!

Just had a day trip to London for a meeting. Must go to bed.

Hello there: Remember me?

I keep thinking that I will find time to keep up but then real life is relentless. We are officially down to one computer because DS2 accidentally tipped a cup of water into the laptop. about the potential repair bill as we could buy two MacBooks for less money in USD and maybe 4 PCs... Ridiculous.

Well, I am off to Wales tomorrow and it cannot come soon enough. DH and I are not seeing eye to eye on anything at the moment and we were up until 4 am discussing the state of things. The talk was very necessary but krikey, I am too old to add a sleepless night to nearly 3 years of broken sleep. I feel like a zombie today and the kids are walking on eggshells.

Have I mentioned the irony that DD2 has finally been sleeping through the night for over a week and I have been up pacing the floors and cleaning walls. So much for my theory that sleep would make a huge dif.

I am in Bristol on Monday morning from 10:00 until 1ish so very happy to meet up with anyone interested in following a zombie with two girls into a coffee shop...

I am that I don't remember how far you are from Bristol, Friz and LL.

Astrophe · 22/01/2009 22:28

Oh Caddy, I hope the break does you and DH a world of good, and that you have a lovely time seeing SIL with your girls. xxxx

Frizbe · 22/01/2009 23:26

Quite a way Caddy sorry but I won't be able to make it on Monday.

Astro, LL, Uni, lol at your misunderstandings

LL no we didn't get snow, but we might tonight! Sorry that crete won't be 'open' when you want to go, looks like Canaries may have to be an option if you want to stay roughly nearby?

UniS · 24/01/2009 19:59

Lo all. sorry I got sucked inthe one an only tea room thread, Not much news here. Boy V tired and back to hving nap most afternoons. My Prents here for weekend.
Caddy- no can do Bristol on monday , I'm working. I'm only 70 miles away so prob nearest of all of us. He you have good few days with family.

Frizbe · 24/01/2009 20:16

I need an award for good parenting today I think (even if I do say so myself) braved dd1 having 3 mates round and only 2 sets of tears all day (one cause someone got an eye accidently poked and 2, cause the token boy wasn't getting his own way with the dvd choice, when actually no one did, as they didn't watch one in the end, as all the parents turned up to collect them for the record, he'd brought Clone Wars with him, which the girls were non plussed about, and he said this (Lol) 'if I can't watch this I'm not watching anything' boys eh!
I was quite good actually, I made biscuits, then let them all cut their own out, then they got to decorate them once cool and scoff them, so they all reamained happy and well fed (did apples n grapes too) So that was my day, what did you guys get upto?

laundrylover · 26/01/2009 18:22

Uni - Kiah is back to napping most days too.

Friz, never heard of the nectar deal. We have booked www.cotswoldwaterparkhotel.co.uk/ for midweek in half term. 3 nights at £84 a night dinner, B and B. Not bad. Might get to visit my bro in Glastonbury before or after.

Weighing in later but will have gained (again) after troughing my way through a stinking cold.

Frizbe · 26/01/2009 22:41

Oh Uni that sounds fab hope they have vacancies, dh is getting Sat am off work here, hurrah he was going to take whole day, but we have visitors to the store coming from a long way off, they called and booked a table with us today, so as we're keen to make a good impression, we're not leaving it to staff/chance!
I'm working Sunday, so he gets a day with the kids, lucky him eh

LL, that looks lovely and the kids go free right (half term offer) am going to show it dh now.

Astrophe · 26/01/2009 23:36

Hope al the holidays and weekend away plans are lovely!

We celebrated Australia Day yesterday - DH's dad and Stepmum came over and we had BBQ lunch - salmon, prawns, sausages and honey chicken with lots of salads...mmmmm. DH's parents not too bad . The 41 degree heat has broken...so much nicer now.

DH still looking for work Had a potential offer from his old employers...not his preference but good to have an option!

DD starting at her kindy tomorrow! I ca't believe that time has finally come around - has been a date in diary for so long...9 weeks since we got here I think!

Poor DS will be bereft without his sister

laundrylover · 27/01/2009 10:25

Astro, DD will love it at kindy though eh and it will give you a break. 9 weeks you've been back - wow!

Friz, yes kids go free and 'cos we needed two beds we got a posher room.

Did you see that a woman in the US had had EIGHT babies?? She is planning to bfeed them too!!!

Uni, did you get the B and B?

OP posts:
Frizbe · 27/01/2009 19:46

LL I heard that on the news this am, I hope they all make it as some are very teeney, they were only expecting 7 as well weren't they

Yay for the room upgrade, it looks like the kinda place that we could hire an aptmt in to fit all 5 of us we may try it later in year or next year!

Astro, only 41o heat its soooo cold here wouldn't mind if it'd do something useful like snow, so we could sledge or ski Great news re possible job though things finally moving, huzzah! I hope ds adjusts ok without dd around to entertain him, he'll no doubt be looking to you a bit more eh (just when you could do with a rest eh!)

UniS · 27/01/2009 22:08

It was too good to be true- minimum booking 3 nights, we only want 2 as have work and nursery etc 1st thing monday. Never mind. We are booked intoa farm stay we have been to before ( pre boy- in fact he was almost conceived there or it may have been a night or two earlier).
Need to do some birthday card- BiL has his birthday teh day they fly to teh UK. think I'll send card to teh new address.

Frizbe · 28/01/2009 10:40

for original idea Uni, but at least you have got somewhere to stay Have a great weekend!

Dd2 and I went to get birthday stuff this am, as I had to go to the tip and the big birthday store is nearby, so we now have a bag of 'Dora' party equipment, which dd2 is very excited about and a bit cross, as I wouldn't let her open it all now

Cadmum · 28/01/2009 12:13

Hello lively bunch!

Back for Wales and we had a fabulous time. DSIL's baby is soo sweet and doing brilliantly now. We had to pry her from my DD1's arms in order to get a snuggle or a feed in the whole week end.

Holidays are sounding great Uni and LL. I am full of . I need to sort out our next adventure but that will require some saving first...

DD2 broke one of her repaired teeth this morning. I am heartbroken and feeling like an inadequate mum as I wait to hear back from this dentist this afternoon. I wonder what they will do now? Poor wee mite was sobbing about not wanting to go back to the dentist and begging me to fix it myself. How I wish...

Must run as the housework is piling up around me, I will need to have dd2 seen today at some point and that will entail a bus, train and tram journey since the car is in being Swiss MOTed.

Frizbe · 28/01/2009 21:21

for you having a great time Caddy, great news that baby is now thriving

Sorry for dd2's tooth hope you managed to get it fixed ok?

I'm this evening,a very old friend whom I've not seen in 15 years or so has gotten back in touch, after I happened across his email on the web and got in touch good to catch up.

Cadmum · 29/01/2009 20:18

Back from the dentist. The tooth cannot be fixed... The raw edge/space has been filled so now dd looks like a Jack-O-Lantern with only one tooth dangling in front. I am trying to keep it all in perspective. In three years time she ought to have a replacement. I just need to pray that her adult teeth are healthy since her milk teeth are a disaster. At least she is healthy otherwise.

The dentist we saw today went on a bit about bottle mouth which is dead fascinating and all but since she has never had a bottle beyond the first hellish weeks of trying to feed her, I am not too sure how relevant the information was. When I explained that she was breast fed the response was that it is all the same thing since there is sugar in breast milk as well.

Basically, all that the dentists we have spoken to in Switzerland d are interested in fixing is the blame. I shrugged and said that I was happy to take the blame if it would help her teeth. So it is all down to me. There was no explanation for how none of her siblings have had a single cavity or why four of her cousins have the same carries and two of them have it in their adult teeth... (I highly doubt that dSIL breast or bottle feeds her school age children.)

Sorry for the novel.. I feel better having vented. I am off to repeat the mantra: It will all be a fading memory followed by: May this be the worst she endures.

UniS · 29/01/2009 20:19

ouch for dd's tooth, or s they say here in exeter tuth . Caddy. ooohhh at mummy mend it plea, their faith is touching at times isn;t it.
boy and I had a bit of a cuddle fest while I was cooking tea. even got as far as him saying he loved mummy and he loved daddy. awww. We went shopping for birthday party suplies too , A ballon theme, so pretty easy. Noisey stuff for party bags at Dhs request! tooters and whistles etc. minimal party bags actully as will just be bit of cake and a noise maker or two and take home a ballon that has been decorating the hall. Got asked fr guidence n a present !!! by one mum friend. "Cheap tat , he likes cars and trains" was my response. Hope that was Ok, I know they aren't well off.
