Phew - day of celebrations over now. Last guest left just before bathtime, with first one having arrived at 10:45, and a constant supply of them in between! DD had a great time, but was very tired after I woke her from her (late) nap this afternoon.

Really sorry that your day didn't go at all to plan Chloe. Will you be able to rearrange?

mrm - speaking from my vast experience of food that works for an open house , may I recommend crudites and dips (just dish out spoonfuls of dips into ramekins as and when needed, and keep crudites in bag in fridge, and grab handfuls at a time to replenish serving plate), blinis with philly and smoked salmon (or caviar ), homemade sweetcorn patties (quick and easy to make, good finger food for children, and went down remarkably well with adults too - see Aitch's blog for recipe), bread with butter and smoked salmon (obviously just make a few slices at a time), Indian snacks (from Tesco - 15 mins in oven), similarly Chinese snacks, olives, cherry tomatoes, kettle chips, organix wotsits for kids, and of course cake .

Happy Birthday Evie .

Ah, glad you had a nice day csws.
Had thought maybe dips for adults and usual kiddie crap for the kids Then dh pointed out that first people are here at 10am, so thinking coffee and croissants for them, then when it runs out,go onto the more substantial and less breakfasty foods? also wondering what to do about cake... whether to hope that a few people are here at the same time in the afternoon, which is likely, and the morning people miss out on the candles and eating, or whether to do the cake just as a family before or after the day? I'm not a fan of the giving substitiute cake out to take home thing, as then you get lumbered with an entire cake to eat yourselves afterwards anyway.

Oh, and new plea for ideas... I want a really ununsual birthday cake design for him. Any ideas, based on what you all know about us? No pirates though, as that would just be copying ds1!!

PhoenixGirl · 10/02/2007 21:51

oh i was gonna suggest a pic of flames dh on a cake and then send a pic of it to him to freak him out more.

PhoenixGirl · 10/02/2007 21:55

in his pirate outfit obv.

CanSleepWontStarve · 10/02/2007 21:56

I can't help mrm. I have no imagination i just went out and bought a Thomas the tank engine cake

hotmama · 10/02/2007 22:53

Thanks for your messages girls!

Well, my dd2 decided to sleep though - yay! Woke up at 5.30 moaned for a bit and then went back to sleep - woke up at 8ish - so unheard of!

Usually wakes up at 3ish before she eventually decides to sleep through!

Did give dd2 a bf this morning - FWIW - still not sure she is getting anything - think that may have been the last one.

Chloe - I've just had 3 glasses of wine before dd2's party tomorrow - but it's just close family so it won't matter if I haven't done everything for when it starts.

Hope everyone is fine - I'm mnetting as dp is watching Match of the Day.

hotmama · 10/02/2007 22:55

Also no creativity from me - M&S do perfectly fine birthday cakes!

May be creative when they are old enough to put in specific requests!

When ever I see anything pirate related in rl - I always think of Flamey!

Jelley · 10/02/2007 23:01

hm - if she was getting nothing at all, she wouldn't suckle I don't think.
My breasts don't ever feel full any more, but I'm sure ds still gets milk.

I make cakes, but not sure of original ideas, I tend to go for easy to make rather than original.
DS is still really chesty - keeps waking himself up coughing
But I got my lie in today

MrCSWS · 10/02/2007 23:21

urgent help

hotmama · 10/02/2007 23:24

Given advice- let us know how the lo is.

Jelley · 11/02/2007 08:36

Morning.

Too late to be of help for csws, but glad to see she is ok now

mrm - I've been thinking about cakes - I think I would do a train. You can have a carriage (or two)at the start of the day, which could be cut up and given out as early visitors leave, and still have a complete train on its own for later.
Is that too boring for you though?

I've just booked us a holiday (Cheap m-f in a caravan near yarmouth, ) the kids are excited So are we

Jelley · 11/02/2007 08:41

like this?

It isn't the best cake in the world, but the clearest pic I could find to show what I mean.....

mustrunmore · 11/02/2007 09:00

Jelley, thats a lovely idea you genius!!!

Jelley · 11/02/2007 10:34

glad you like it. In fact I've decided to do it too!
I'm making "come and play" invitations with a train on the front now

CanSleepWontStarve · 11/02/2007 10:54

Happy Birthday Rhuaridh .

Well dd went to sleep on me at 9:15 and I managed to put her back to bed, where she still is (dh woke her too early this morning whilst checking her breathing/temp). Hoping she's chipper when she gets up.

Flame is on her way and will be here for lunch . Might let her online afterwards .

Hope Oscar has improved Chloe.

3k where are you?

Very good idea for cake Jelley. We just had simple dairy free angel cake with lemon icing, and a fruit cake alternative, both made by mil.

PhoenixGirl · 11/02/2007 11:10

Happy Birthday Rhuaridh

I'm having a lazy pj day today Lew isn't dressed either. I've just sent dh to Asda for the shopping too I'm so lazy.

csws glad pippa is better.

Like the cake idea Jel

3k · 11/02/2007 12:21

Hi Ladies,

Sorry I've not been on for a bit, me and DH are having really, really bad problems. Not sure if we can work things out or not, dont want to go into it on here though. We are going out this afternoon to see a film and have a drink and PIL are having DS. Had a week of crying and I'm drained, have also lost more weight - now 10 stone. We will have to see how it goes.

It's DS's birthday tomorrow, happy birthday to all the other babies I have missed. I'm going to put him down for a nap shortly and make him a cake.

Will catch up properly soon, also well behind on my book-keeping work. Ahhhh!!

2boysmacca · 11/02/2007 12:38

Sorry to hear that 3k . Hope you can work things through

mustrunmore · 11/02/2007 13:24

Oh, 3k, very sorry to hear that. We're here if you do need to let off steam/get an opinion.
I was thinking the other day, that I dont know how me and dh's relationship will be once we have time to actually have one again I really think its going to be a classic 'no time till we retire ' thing now! If we ever get time from the kids and he isnt doing 60+hrs a week at work, I'll want to spend all that time training anyway.

Hey, great idea for the cake Jelley, but now totally pointless, as friend is doing his cake for him Bying the cake and decorating, apparently...

SoupDragon · 11/02/2007 14:15

Glad DD is better, CSWS! Scarey. (as an aside, dod you know you can make dairy free chocolate cake with that Pure margarine and cocoa. Tasted fab and you can make the "butter" cream like that too. I've done it for many a birthday party as a couple of friends' children were dairy intolerant/allergic)

Anyway, BabyDragon has excelled herself and pooed 2 large (5p size) googley eyes this morning

SoupDragon · 11/02/2007 14:16

3K.

PhoenixGirl · 11/02/2007 14:51

Sorry to hear that 3k, hope you're ok.

Jelley · 11/02/2007 16:04

3k. I hope you manage to resolve things....
