Makes me think of a new convo topic...what's the most random job you've ever done?? Do share....

Tindel · 10/12/2015 21:16

And cluster feeding appears to have made a comeback! As DH isn't here, I decided not to spend half my night running up and down stairs trying to settle him, so have brought J downstairs. He's happily feeding on and off and I'm watching House of Cards.

Most random job? I was a life model as a student, does that count?

Frolicacid · 10/12/2015 21:34

That lasted about 20 mins! Oh well! He's had a feed and is snoring nicely, but I don't think I can be bothered going back down stairs. May as well try to sleep before party time at mugabe's later!

The receptionists at our gp surgery are lovely. I sometimes work out if there, so they sort of know me, which I think helps.

I don't think I've had any unusual jobs. I've done plenty of bar and shop jobs in my teens, but all quite normal.
Life modelling? Get you tindel! I don't think I could ever get my clothes off in public. But I'm a total fidget and can't sit still for 2 minutes, so I doubt they'd want me anyway!

FattySantaRobin · 10/12/2015 22:11

The receptionists are usually very nice as I've been with the same Dr since being a child, but they've just hired a new one who is a total dick.
Random job: Blush I've never actually worked. I've volunteered but never had a paying job. And even then its nursery/children's centre work. So nothing exciting or weird

Grok · 10/12/2015 23:31

I hope everyone is having a hooding night so far? I was almost ready to congratulate myself that DD was going to stay gown until her old first feed time around 2ish. Made it to 11.30! In fairness she had a full nappy, and the boiler guy couldn't fix it tonight so the room is a bit cold (she's wearing a hat and extra blankets though!)

I was a dreaded debt collector in university! I did the French accounts so It paid lots which I needed for tuition. You definitely meet all sorts!

Grok · 10/12/2015 23:32

Blergh... "Goodish", not "hooding"! Damn autocorrect!

Slowifeandthegrumpydwarfs · 11/12/2015 00:25

Diamond salesperson on Bond Street. I enjoyed that one!

I've just cracked and given grumpy 2 Calpol to see if that will help her sleep on the basis that it won't harm her if not but if it does then at least we know she is in pain. She has now conked out - hoorah! Let's hope it's for longer than 2 hrs otherwise DH might actually explode with tiredness induced rage Angry.

The doctors receptionists here are lovely when it's about the children and awful when it's about us. Presume they are told to make it as awkward as possible for adults in order to eliminate time-wasters. It's fecking (autocorrect: 'fencing') annoying though.

How is everyone doing with regards to Christmas preparedness? I feel totally overwhelmed by the thought of it all, which I know is just down to tiredness, but even so it's feeling more like a chore than a joy at present Xmas Hmm

FattySantaRobin · 11/12/2015 00:27

I've got most of my shopping done. And dinner is at my mums again so no need to worry about that. Grin
I shop throughout the year. I like to be prepared especially as DDs birthday is the 18th of December!

Fanby · 11/12/2015 01:21

Well we skipped the 10:30wtf feed of last night, so a sleep from 9pm-1am that's progress for her! I just hope I can get back to sleep quickly!!
Some good random jobs coming through!!!

Tindel - good idea!! Kind of gave up on house of cards, shame I was enjoying it! Life
Model definitely counts!!

Grok - how long do you think you'll be out of heating etc for? Debt collector is a good one!!

Slowwife - ooooh sparkly diamonds! Still got a whole load of presents and the subsequent wrapping to do but I think I'm so tired I'm actually not as stressed as I'd usually be by this point

Clstow · 11/12/2015 02:21

Hurrah DS seems to be better today... Not nearly as much crying, even managed to take him for a glass of wine (I had wine, he didn't bother) at a new pub which has just opened round the corner in an old art-deco cinema. Very cool place. Hoping we're on the up post-jabs. First feed of the night now rather than 11 as well.

Jobs... I used to be an entertainment journalist - would hang round on red carpets and go to junkets. Not nearly as glam or exciting as you might think!

Christmas... Feel like I'm getting there as have sent some cards but the reality is I have all the shopping and wrapping to do. Might get in the festive spirit by eating mince pies while doing it all online.

Hope the poorly mummas and babbas are feeling better and that Mugabe nights has an unusually slow night.

Giraffescandance1 · 11/12/2015 04:04

Party time at Mugabes!!!

Once I did some cleaning jobs whilst a student, one involved cleaning out aka putting the possessions of a dead drug addict into the bin. Their flat was heaving with rubbish and stolen goods, seeing the chaos they lived in certainly put me off drugs for life! I had another job where I had to count trade supplies of costume jewellery, literally hundreds of earrings or earring butterflies...it was mind numbing! I was glad to move on and work my way up a bit in more interesting jobs!

Hope everyone's night has improved and there are lots of sleeping babies. I think baby giraffe may have turned the corner on this cold as she's ditched the blood curdling screams and has slept on her side of the bed for most of the night Smile

Fanby · 11/12/2015 04:50

I wonder if babies that do sleep will have a better understanding of personal space in beds when they are older and not hog the duvet etc?

Clstow - glad he's feeling better and even more so that you got to go out and about - the pub sounds awesome!

Giraffes - the cleaning job reminds me of a film called 'sunshine cleaning' with Emily blunt. Sounds like mini giraffe is feeling better too, hurrah!

Mugabe nights seems quiet tonight, I'm very happy for you all - genuinely!! About time some decent nights happened, that's what we wanted on this thread!!

Fanby · 11/12/2015 04:51

I meant babies that co-sleep!

Tindel · 11/12/2015 04:59

We're up, J is having a feed. Left him feeding / comfort sucking until I went to bed about 1030. He was absolutely sound asleep, so I might try persuade DH to try this tack, it feels much less stressful.

With my random job, it was posing for an artist, rather than a class and he was an abstract artist, so don't think the sketches even really looked much like me!

Re Christmas, I massively scaled down this year, so I'm pretty much done! I bake biscuits as a present for friends, so need a day to do that. Will wait until DH has finished work and can help with J to do that. There are quite a few J-themed presents, which made it a lot easier this year! Tree is probably going up at the weekend. Not feeling particularly Christmassy at the moment, but hoping that will change soon. Still feeling quite low, so must make a start on my CBT stuff before I speak to the therapist next week.

Right, J is asleep, so will attempt ninja transfer

rrra · 11/12/2015 05:02

Hello. We all survived going out for Xmas party on jab day. We were gone 7-11 in the end. DS didn't want any of the expressed milk though. I fed him when we got back. He has been very sleepy though, must be jabs. Just woke him to feed as my boob was about to explode! I had two glasses of wine with my meal and received lots of compliments on my dress. That morning I was back to pre preg weight, hooray! Some benefits to all this night time feeding.

Most random job was working in a yoghurt factory. It was a hot summer, and I expected it to be a nice cold factory. Nope! Yoghurt gets put into the pots hot and then cooled! And had to wear attractive white jacket and hairnet. Worst part was cleaning out the dispensing machine.

Feel pretty ready for Xmas. Got most gifts, just need to wrap. That seems like the hardest part at the moment!

loveandsmiles · 11/12/2015 06:57

I just love Xmas - cannot wait🎄🎄🎄

Super organised - everything bought and wrapped although I can't resist buying extras! Cards sent. Just need to buy the food for the big day and do some Xmas baking. Putting decorations up this weekend - it was DS birthday this week so need to take all the birthday balloons down first - like him to feel his birthday is special before I start on Xmas!! It's DD3 birthday on the 29th Dec - not a great date but all organised for this too - party arranged and presents boughtSmile

DH came home with a singing bear and a singing penguin for baby - bear sings Jingle Bells and penguin sings a bizzare song to the tune of As Cold as Ice in a little kiddy voice - DD is highly entertained by them and gets really excited when both singing together - let's hope the batteries run out soon!!!

My doctors surgery are quite nice - always try to see children on the day. None of my children are vaccinated and my previous surgery gave me a hard time but this surgery are lovely. I do like your line of "where did you receive your medical training" mzzzf lol

Off to get my Xmas nails done todayXmas Smile

mzzzf · 11/12/2015 08:05

Welllllll I may have had a minor meltdown last night. It all for a bit too much, tired, sleeping on mattress on floor, cold/snot, screaming baby, doing 99% of everything myself plus the stress re job and putting her into nursery. Cue me in tears telling DH to take baby away.
I took some uber painkillers, mini mzzzf vomited a huge amount, turns out DH had helpfully fed her half a pouch of food straight after she'd taken a full bottle - poor mite was probably full to bursting!
And this morning I have emailed the lady to decline the job. Since I can't guarantee when dd will be quiet enough for me to call I thought it best to email early. I feel relived and a little sad at turning the job down, I'm not ready yet but feel a little upset that I'm not superwoman if you get what I mean...
Oooorrff it all just came to a head last night. But DH is out tonight on his works Christmas do so no bed fixed tonight either and me solo alllllll day. (Fatty you're a ledge for doing this solo with three!!!)

I'm glad the nights have improved all round for babies. Mini mzzzf is luring us into a false sense of security as the co sleeping makes her snooze for England but I don't sleep well due to lack of space (I'm a nighttime disco dancer!) so we'll see what happens when we get back to our normal set up.

Am I a fanny for turning down that job?! 😕

Christmas will be very very minor this year, but the 🎄 is up! I've bought no presents for anyone though but will do some last minute dashing round shops I think!

Why is there no symbol for a caffeine IV drip?!

FattySantaRobin · 11/12/2015 08:14

mzzzf if you don't feel ready then turning down the job was absolutely the right decision.

fanby I think it was you who said about co sleepers and spacial awareness. My 7 yo co slept and he still starfishes and steals my covers when he climbs in bed with me.

kbro79 · 11/12/2015 08:48

The moment your baby wakes at 4am and your husband says 'I can't believe he's slept till 4'. No you can't believe that cause he hasn't. But you clearly have.

4am seems to be our new witching hour. He will not settle after it. Even co sleeping only buys me a little bit till he wakes himself.

Not sure if it's random but i did work for a charity that meant I spent a lot of time dressed as a giant sunflower??

Christmas - am v excited about it. But my mum does all the cooking so don't really have to do anything other than rock up. And get through 3 nights at the in laws first.........DH has Monday off for us to blitz the shopping. And I have done loads online.

Mzzzf if the job didnt feel right then you totally did the right thing. I couldn't handle a job at all yet either (my spelling and grammar on here I think back that up!) my Dh is out tonight too so will also be flying solo. Am going to pop to waitrose and treat myself to a v nice ready meal. Friday's are so rock n roll these days.

Right must shake a leg. Jabs are waiting.

Tindel · 11/12/2015 09:05

kbro I've worked for a few charities, dressing up as weird things seems to go with the territory! I avoided some of the weirder ones, but I do have a collection of oversized branded T shirts in my wardrobe that are good for lazy days and DIY.

J has conked out for his morning nap despite an epically stinky nappy. Am going to leave him to it for now and get some stuff done in peace. Am compiling a photo book for ILs for Xmas and need to get it finished with appropriately cute pics of J

sianihedgehog · 11/12/2015 09:15

Omg, another sleep through! Perhaps we're just going to sleep every second night now?

Random jobs: I did two seasons of tree planting in far northern Ontario when I was a teenager. You basically fly out to Thunder Bay with a tent and all your gear in March, get driven 6 or 8 hours north to a chunk of freshly burned clearcut, pitch your tent through the snow, and then live in it for a few months spending 12h a day of planting tiny tree seedlings. HARD work, you're carrying huge weights and walking miles. I lost so much fat that my periods stopped and I grew hair on my shoulders, but I could lift my 250lb boyfriend when I got back!
I also had a job building props for a children's TV show which I got hired for by a customer I knew from my job in a pet shop. That was a wonderful job, but the lady who hired me got brain cancer. :( I ended up adopting her pet rat when she went into hospital.

nolongerwaitingfornumber2 · 11/12/2015 09:16

Morning all,

A better but not brilliant night. DS wouldn't go down in the evening but was a chappy just sitting in his bouncer watching me wrap presents. He then self settled in his crib around 11pm and slept until 3.30 which is the longest stretch we've had for weeks. He was a bugger after that though as just wouldn't go back in the crib so I ended up doing a Giraffe's 45 degree propped up sleep!

Mzzf, I think you have made the right decision. Other jobs will come up and when you are ready you will know.

Kbro, my DH says things like that! How they sleep through the wake ups is beyond me.

Rrra, glad you had a good night out. Ours is tonight and I've left about 7 ozs of expressed milk for DH. Will only be out 7.30-11 so should be plenty.

Christmas is going ok so far. Most gifts bough and some wrapped, tree is up and we only have MIL for the day this year so dinner won't be too stressful.

Random job - I worked in accounts for a aristocratic family at a big house like Downton one summer. Was fascinating...in one account they were £500k overdrawn and there were lots of bills from Fortnum and Mason for champagne and caviar!

nolongerwaitingfornumber2 · 11/12/2015 09:17

Happy chappy!

Dozygirl · 11/12/2015 16:45

No random jobs for me but I did go on holiday when I worked in a b&b and asked not to come back lol. I was useless though and I was a scaredy cat when I was younger so too scared to speak to anyone.

Fanby he wants to go in March when piper will be 7 months old. I just don't know whether I'm in the wrong for not wanting him to go. And I keep bringing it up in snide comments all the time which isn't helping. So I think I'm just gonna have to get over it and let him go and never mention it again until I want a trip away without him and he can be left for a week with Piper.

Joskar · 11/12/2015 16:45
